@PlasticCog PlasticCog released this 12 Oct 03:40

A native port of Atari Games' 720 Degrees (1986 arcade, rev 4), with a level editor. The game is newly written code, verified against the original arcade program, and contains no program code from the arcade ROMs. You need your own ROMs to play.

New in 0.3.0

Android

  • The game now runs on Android phones and tablets: 720degrees-0.3.0-android.apk (Android 7.0 or newer, 64-bit).
  • On-screen touch controls:
    • Steer: put your left thumb anywhere on the left half of the screen and slide it in the direction the skater should point.
    • JUMP and KICK are at the bottom right.
    • COIN, 1P and 2P are at the top right: insert a coin, then press 1P or JUMP.
    • MENU opens the debug menu (sized for fingers), PAUSE pauses.
  • The controls sit in the black bars beside the picture and keep clear of camera cutouts. They fade out while you play with a gamepad and come back at the next touch.
  • The back button closes an open window, then pauses. Pressing it again while paused quits.
  • High scores and settings are saved as soon as you switch to another app. The game is paused when you come back.

All systems

  • If the game finds no ROMs, it now shows a screen where you can choose MAME's 720.zip or the loose files. It copies them into its Game folder (on Android, into its own storage) and starts. Loose files are recognised by their contents, so renamed files work too.
  • F switches between fullscreen and a window, like F11 and Alt+Enter, unless you have made F one of the game's controls.
  • --touch shows the touch controls on a computer, with the mouse as the finger.

You need the ROMs

The game reads its graphics, sounds and data from your own copy of the MAME ROM set 720 (rev 4), which has 37 files including 720-eeprom.bin. The ROMs are not included.

  • Computers: put the files, or MAME's 720.zip as it is, into the Game folder, or choose them on the setup screen.
  • Android: tap Choose ROM files... on the first start and pick your 720.zip, or select all 37 files at once. You can also copy them over USB into Android/data/com.plasticcog.degrees720/files/Game.

Downloads

Unpack the zip for your system, put the ROMs into its Game folder and run 720degrees (720degrees.exe on Windows). editor720 is the level editor.

  • Windows: the full game has been tested on this platform.
  • Android:
    • Open the APK on your device and allow your browser or file manager to install apps when Android asks.
    • The app is signed with this project's own key, so later versions install over it and keep your scores.
    • It was tested in the Android emulator (Android 16, phone size): ROM setup, touch controls, menus, the back button and switching apps. It has not been played on a real phone yet, so please report any problems.
  • Linux and macOS:
    • The builds are made automatically from the same code. The build and the test of the context switching the game runs on pass on these systems.
    • The full game has not been played there yet, so please report any problems.
  • Linux: built on Ubuntu 22.04, for distributions with glibc 2.35 or newer. It needs X11 or Wayland and ALSA or PulseAudio, which desktop systems have.
  • macOS: for macOS 11 or newer. The programs are not signed. Clear the download quarantine first (xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine <unpacked folder>), or open them once with right-click > Open.

Starting a game

  • 1 starts a one-player game, 2 a two-player game (both can be remapped with F4).
  • Jump, Kick, the mouse and any gamepad button now start a one-player game. The arcade game starts two players when Jump is pressed with two credits in, which happened by accident easily.
  • In the continue countdown the start keys continue.

Game

  • Closing the window always quits the game. The sound stops at once, and the program can no longer keep running without a window.
  • The debug menu (Tab) has a Menu size setting from 100 % to 250 %, with sharp text. The help and controls windows use it too, and the setting is saved.
  • The No water and No bushes / thorns cheats now draw each patch as the floor around it: asphalt in a road pool, the paving next to a pond, the planter's floor under the thorns. Before, every patch was drawn with the same floor. Shorelines no longer show slivers of water.

Level editor

  • Prefabs: whole objects from the original maps, ready to place with one click. These are ramps and quarter-pipes, pools, planters, platforms, walls and markings, plus 2 x 2-block sections of the park courses and curbs. They have large previews and show how often the original maps use each one. Choosing a prefab switches the map to the Stamp tool.
  • Tiles now shows each kind's tiles where the maps use them: map blocks with that kind's tiles highlighted, instead of a long list of tiny single tiles. Click a tile to paint with it.
  • The Blocks panel lists blocks in the order the map uses them, so neighbours on the map are neighbours in the list.
  • The former Pieces tab is now called Parts.

Accuracy

  • More than 80 rarely reached instructions of the rewritten game program now set the processor's condition codes exactly like the original. This was found with new checks and a new test scenario that enters high scores. It doesn't change how the game plays.

720 Degrees native port 0.1.0

Choose a tag to compare

@PlasticCog PlasticCog released this 11 Oct 19:26

A native PC port of Atari Games' 720 Degrees (1986 arcade, rev 4), with a level editor.

What it is

  • Newly written code. Both of the arcade board's programs, the main game program and the sound program, have been rewritten as new C++. Every routine was verified against the original program instruction by instruction. Each call was run both ways and compared (registers, memory, condition codes, cycle timing, every sound chip access), and 17 whole play sessions were compared frame by frame. They are byte-identical to the original. The game and the editor contain no program code from the arcade ROMs.
  • No emulator. Graphics, the sound chips (POKEY, YM2151, TMS5220 speech) and the controls are reimplemented natively, on SDL3.
  • Controls can be remapped (F4), with Xbox-style gamepad defaults. On the keyboard, Ctrl jumps and Shift kicks.
  • Debug menu (Tab): sprite and terrain height-map overlays, skater and object state, live physics tuning, cheats (including no water and no bushes), a sound test and a RAM editor. Bug fixes and unused content of the original are available as options there, all off by default.
  • Level editor (editor720): Skate City, the six layouts of each park and the attract screens. It saves .720mod files, which the game loads from mods/.

You need the ROMs

The game reads its graphics, sounds and data from your own copy of the MAME ROM set 720 (rev 4, 37 files including 720-eeprom.bin). The ROMs are not included. Put the files, or MAME's 720.zip as it is, into the Game folder.

macOS Apple Silicon 720degrees-0.1.0-macos-arm64.zip

  • Linux and macOS builds are made automatically from the same code. The build and the test of the context switching the game runs on pass on these systems, but the full game has not yet been played there, so please report any problems.

Known gaps

  • A few paths that no test reaches have been written to follow the original but have not been compared with it: the self test's fault reports, some music commands no sound uses, and three rarely used sound board commands.
  • The park palettes the editor shows are captured by running the game on its first start.
