StreamWave v0.11.2
Transcript setup
-
The Transcript panel helps you set up whisper.cpp instead of the old "whisper.cpp not found" message. That message also suggested
winget install whisper.cpp, a package that doesn't exist. The panel now:- explains what whisper-cli is and what "on PATH" means;
- shows the right install command for your system with a Copy button:
scoop install whisper-cppon Windows, brew install whisper.cppon Mac,pacman/apton distros that package it, or building from source; - has Open terminal: on Linux the command is typed in for you to run; on Windows and Mac it is copied for pasting. Nothing runs until you press Enter.
-
Set it up for me (Windows and Linux): downloads the official whisper.cpp build from the ggml-org/whisper.cpp GitHub releases and a speech model from Hugging Face. A confirm dialog lists the files, where they come from and their sizes, and lets you pick the model. You get progress and Cancel. Files are checked by sha256 and size, then installed into StreamWave's own folder and used from there, so no PATH change is needed. On Windows you can optionally add that folder to your user PATH. Remove undoes everything.
-
I already have it…: choose whisper-cli yourself (checked before it's saved), then Check again.
-
Safer lookup. In order:
- the file you chose;
- StreamWave's copy;
whisper-clinext to the app;whisper-clion PATH.
A generic
mainor barewhisperprogram is never run. Downloads only go over HTTPS to GitHub and Hugging Face, and redirects are checked too.
StreamWave v0.11.1
Fixed
- New / Open / Close / Recover no longer leave the old project playing. Playback stops (with a short fade) after you confirm "Discard unsaved changes?", the transport and playhead reset, and the old project's audio is freed. If a recording is running you are asked first; the take is saved and added to the old project before it closes. Cancelling any prompt or the Open dialog changes nothing.
- New File > Close Project (Ctrl+W).
Follow playhead
- The timeline scrolls smoothly to keep the playhead in view while playing or recording. Toggle it with the FOLLOW LED on the transport row, View > Follow Playhead or F. It is on by default and remembered.
- Scrolling or dragging in the timeline pauses following. It resumes when the playhead is back in view, or on the next Play. The ruler and the preview move with it.
Faster Play and Stop
- Play now starts in about 30 ms instead of 120–1000 ms. The output stream stays open in shared mode, so other apps can still use the device. Unchanged audio is not re-rendered or re-measured, and imported audio is kept decoded.
- Stop fades out over 6 ms instead of cutting (no click) and is ready for the next Play at once.
- While a track plays, its waveform no longer redraws 30 times a second, which keeps the window responsive.
StreamWave v0.11.0
New look
- Hardware-style design: dark brushed panels with screws, knurled rotary knobs with an orange tick ring, LED level meters, pill buttons, captioned dropdowns and LED on/off toggles. Labels are uppercase and the accent colour is amber. The app stays dark and keeps the whale logo, every shortcut and every setting.
- Knobs everywhere you shape sound: the effects rack, Layering Effects and the effect dialogs use knobs instead of sliders. Drag up/right (or scroll, or use the arrow keys) to turn, hold Shift for fine steps, double-click or press Delete to reset. Each knob shows its value and range; bipolar ones (EQ gains) light up from the centre. Each change is still one undo step.
- Colour per effect: every effect type has its own colour (EQ blue, gate violet, compressor pink, loudness amber, limiter orange…), used in the rack, the layer list and the new workspace.
- Meters: the input meter is an LED row with a dB scale, plus a vertical level meter. The timecode uses an LED-style display, and the record button sits in a bezel.
Timeline ruler
- A time ruler above the tracks scrolls with them and adapts its steps to the zoom level (m:ss, or h:mm:ss on long projects). It shows the playhead, cursor, selection and markers.
- Click or drag on the ruler to move the cursor (it seeks while playing). With the ruler focused, ←/→ step (Shift = bigger steps), Home/End jump to the start/end.
Selected-audio preview
- A preview strip under the recorder shows the whole active track, the selection, the playhead and the part of the timeline currently in view, with LEN / START / END / SEL readouts.
- Click to move the cursor, drag to select. Zoom to selection makes the selection fill the timeline; Fit shows everything.
Effects Layer workspace
- A Settings | Effects Layer switch in the header. Effects Layer replaces the side panel with a large effects editor; Settings brings the classic panel back exactly as it was. Switching never touches the project or playback.
- Left effects list: the active track's effects and the layers of the clip under the cursor, in processing order. Click one to edit it. The list collapses to a narrow strip (« / ») and does so automatically on small windows.
- A signal-flow strip shows the full order: clip layers → clip gain/fades → track effects → mix.
- The selected effect opens as a colour-coded module with big knobs, an on/off LED, run earlier/later and remove. Add track effects or clip layers, and use the track presets, from the same place.
- Turning a track-effect knob is heard live while playing. It is the same data as the rack and the ◧ panel, so nothing is applied twice.
Fades and crossfades
- Fade handles: drag the small square at a clip's top-left or top-right corner to set its fade-in or fade-out. The fade's shape is drawn over the waveform.
- Crossfades between neighbouring clips: drag the small ⨯ handle at the bottom of a cut outwards, or click it for a small panel with a Length knob, the Curve (Equal power for different material, Linear for the same material or room tone) and Remove crossfade.
- A crossfade is centred on the cut and uses the audio just beyond each clip's edge, so nothing on the timeline moves. When there is no spare audio there (two whole files back to back), the clips are made to overlap by the missing amount: later audio moves earlier, and StreamWave tells you so.
- Playback, the mix and export all use the same render code, and a test checks that a crossfade plays exactly as it exports. Split, join, undo/redo, save and reopen keep crossfades. A cut or move that changes which clip a crossfade fades from removes it.
Projects
- Projects that use crossfades or non-default fade shapes are saved as
.twtformat version 3. StreamWave 0.10 and older refuse them with "made by a newer StreamWave" instead of opening them wrongly. Projects without them still save as version 1 or 2, and every older.twtstill opens and sounds the same.
Fixes
- The crossfade handle sits above the overlay scrollbar used on Linux, so clicking it on a zoomed timeline no longer scrolls the view.
Limits (honest list)
- Crossfades only work between neighbouring clips on one track; there is no free stacking of three or more clips.
- There is no master/output effect bus: the mix is the sum of the tracks after their effects.
- The ruler shows time only. There is no bars/beats ruler because projects have no tempo.
- Normalize and Loudness clip layers on a crossfaded clip measure the clip including the extra audio used by the crossfade.
- Playing a selection that starts inside a crossfade plays the incoming clip without the first part of the fade.

StreamWave v0.10.0
Importing several files at once
- Choose how 2+ files are laid out. Importing two or more audio files together (File → Import, the Import button, or dropping them on the window) now asks first:
- One after another on one track: in the order shown (reorder with ↑/↓), starting at 0:00 or at the cursor. Each clip starts exactly where the previous one ends, at the decoded length of its file, with no gaps or overlaps, even when the files have different formats and sample rates.
- One track per file: every file starts at the same time, on its own track named after the file.
- Cancel leaves the project untouched. A single file imports exactly as before. Files are referenced, not copied, and the whole import is one undo step.
Moving clips
- Drag a clip by its title bar to move it along its track, or onto another track. You can drop it past the end of the project; the timeline grows, and the project length is the end of the last clip.
- While dragging you see a ghost of the clip, the target track lights up, and a readout shows the exact start time and track. The original clip is dimmed. Esc cancels.
- Snapping to markers, clip edges, the cursor and 0:00 is on by default; hold Alt to place freely.
- Overlaps are refused. A clip can't be dropped where it would overlap audio on the target track: the ghost turns red with "overlaps audio" and nothing changes. Empty space between clips is real silence (it plays and exports as silence).
- Moves only change where a clip sits. The audio, trims, gain, fades and effects go with the clip. Positions are whole samples at the track's rate, so moving clips around never drifts. Undo/redo, save and reopen all work.
Layering Effects (per-clip effect stacks)
- ◧ button on every clip's title bar, and Layering Effects… in the clip's right-click menu, open a panel with that clip's own effects as a stack of layers.
- The top layer runs first: list order is processing order. Each layer has an on/off (bypass) toggle and can be removed. Click a layer to edit its settings. Reorder by dragging the ⋮⋮ grip, with the ↑/↓ buttons, or from the keyboard (↑/↓ to pick, Alt+↑/↓ to move, Space toggles, Del removes). Each change is one undo step.
- Layers use the same effects as track effects (EQ, compressor, gate, de-esser, limiter, loudness, normalize, gain, fades, AI denoise), running in the same engine. Noise reduction stays a track effect because it needs a learned noise profile.
- Order: clip layers → clip gain/fades → track effects → output. The clip's ◧ button shows how many layers are active.
- Ownership: layers belong to that one clip. Copy/paste gives the copy its own stack, and splitting a clip gives each piece its own copy, so editing one never changes another.
- Live while playing: editing a layer during playback hands the new audio to the player without stopping it (in the rare case the audio format changes, playback restarts instead). Playback and export run the same code, and a test checks they produce identical samples.
Projects
.twtfiles that use free clip positions or clip layers are saved as format version 2. Older StreamWave versions refuse those with a clear message instead of opening them wrongly. Projects without them still save as version 1. Every older.twtstill opens.
Credit and licence note
- The layer list was designed after looking at how the open-source Vital synth (GPL-3.0) presents its effect order: a compact reorderable list with on/off toggles, kept separate from the parameter editor. No Vital code was used. StreamWave's layers are its own code on its existing effects engine.

StreamWave 0.9.0
🎙 Recording
- Safety track (Settings): every recording is also written as a
*_safety.wavcopy at −12 dB, kept in step with the main take (same pre-roll, file rollover and crash recovery). If a take clips, boost the safety copy instead. - Voice trigger (Settings): recording starts when your input stays above a level (dB) for a hold time (ms), and stops about 1.5 s after it drops back. An indicator shows next to the record button.
✂️ Editing
- Silence auto-trim: ✂ Silences on a track finds the pauses (noise floor + 8 dB, at least 250 ms, with 80 ms padding so word tails survive) and shows how many it found; Trim N silences cuts them in one undoable step.
- Per-clip gain and fades: select a range and set gain (dB) and fade in/out (ms) in the Selection panel. Non-destructive, applied on export; clips with different settings stay split.
- Mix all: ▶ Mix all plays every track together with its effects. Export is still one track at a time.
📤 Export and projects
- Batch export: ⇩⇩ Batch writes every track as a 24-bit WAV into a folder you pick, each brought to the loudness target from Settings (−14, −16 or −23 LUFS).
- Double-click to open:
.twtproject files open in StreamWave (registered by the Windows installer).
📝 Transcription
- Whisper transcription (side panel): transcribe a track on your own computer with whisper.cpp (
whisper-clinext to StreamWave or on PATH; on Macbrew install whisper-cpp) and a ggml model you choose in Settings. Click a line to play from there. No model or program is bundled, nothing goes to the cloud.
🔀 Routing
- Virtual output hint: when a virtual audio device (VB-CABLE, VoiceMeeter, Stereo Mix/loopback, BlackHole on Mac) is in the output list, Settings explains how to send StreamWave's sound into OBS, Discord or Zoom. The user guide has the steps.
🔧 Under the hood
- Playback resampling now uses rubato (FFT, anti-aliased) instead of linear interpolation, when a file's sample rate differs from the device.
Updating
- Windows / Linux AppImage, from 0.6.x – 0.8.4: use Help → Check for updates…, or wait for the quiet startup check.
- Mac, and Linux .deb / .rpm / Arch packages: updates are manual for now. The update check tells you about 0.9.0 and opens this page; install the new file over the old one. Settings and projects are kept.
- From 0.5.x: download and run the installer once.

StreamWave v0.8.4
StreamWave 0.8.4
🍎 StreamWave for Mac
- StreamWave now runs on macOS 11 Big Sur or later, as one universal app for Apple Silicon (M1 and newer) and Intel Macs.
- Download
StreamWave_0.8.4_universal.dmg, open it and drag StreamWave into Applications. (StreamWave_0.8.4_universal.app.zipis the same app as a zip.) - First launch: StreamWave isn't notarised by Apple yet, so a normal double-click is blocked the first time. Right-click (or Control-click) StreamWave in Applications, choose Open, then click Open again. After that it opens normally.
- Newer macOS (Sequoia 15 and later): if there's no Open button, click Done, then go to System Settings → Privacy & Security, scroll down to "StreamWave" was blocked and click Open Anyway, then confirm.
- Allow microphone access when macOS asks.
- For MP3/FLAC/Opus export and OBS video import, install FFmpeg with
brew install ffmpeg. StreamWave finds Homebrew and MacPorts installs automatically. - Updates are manual on Mac for now. Help → Check for updates (and the quiet startup check) tells you when a new version is out and opens the download page. Download the new
.dmgand drag StreamWave into Applications to replace the old one. Your settings and projects are kept.
🐧 Linux packages for your distro
- Besides the AppImage there are now packages for each family of distros:
- Debian, Ubuntu, Mint, Pop!_OS:
sudo apt install ./StreamWave-0.8.4-linux-x86_64.deb - Fedora, RHEL:
sudo dnf install ./StreamWave-0.8.4-linux-x86_64.rpm(openSUSE:sudo zypper install ./StreamWave-0.8.4-linux-x86_64.rpm) - Arch, CachyOS, Manjaro, EndeavourOS:
sudo pacman -U ./StreamWave-0.8.4-linux-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst
- Debian, Ubuntu, Mint, Pop!_OS:
- They add StreamWave to your app menu. The .deb and .rpm install the ALSA library if it's missing and recommend FFmpeg.
- The AppImage is still the copy that updates itself. With a .deb, .rpm or Arch package, Help → Check for updates tells you when a new version is out and opens the download page, and you install the new package over the old one.
Windows
- No changes beyond the version number. The signed in-app updater works as before.
Updating
- Windows / Linux AppImage, from 0.6.x – 0.8.3: use Help → Check for updates…. The quiet startup check will also offer this version.
- From 0.5.x: download and run the installer below once. Older versions have no updater.

Readable dropdowns on Linux
- Every drop-down list (microphone, project, export format and options, effect picker, spectrogram scale and colours) was drawn as a white box with light text on Linux, so you couldn't see what was selected. Dropdowns now use the dark theme on Linux and Windows, with a dark, readable list of options.
New publisher name
- StreamWave is now published as Del (postmanpat). You'll see this name in the About screen, the installer and the "Publisher" column in Add/Remove Programs. Settings, projects and updates carry over unchanged.
Smoother Windows upgrades
- The installer finds your existing StreamWave install even if it was installed under an earlier publisher name. It updates that folder in place and removes the leftover registry entry from the old name, so Add/Remove Programs shows a single StreamWave entry.
Whale icon on Windows
- Windows Explorer and Edge showed a generic installer icon instead of the whale for the setup file, and sometimes for shortcuts. The icon now includes small sizes Windows can always draw, so the whale shows on the download, the installer, the app, the shortcuts and the uninstaller.

Fixed: right-click submenus near the window edge
- When the right-click menu had to move up to fit the window, such as when right-clicking near the bottom, the Effects and Track submenus could be impossible to reach. Moving the mouse towards them crossed another item, and the submenu closed.
- Submenus now have hover intent: while you move towards an open submenu, crossing other items on the way doesn't close it.
- A submenu also opens on click and stays open until you pick another item.
- Menu placement is reworked:
- The menu opens at the pointer and flips up or left when there's no room, so it always fits in the window.
- Submenus sit right beside their item, flipping to the left of the menu and shifting up when needed, and never cover the menu.
- A menu taller than the window scrolls.
- On a zoomed or scrolled timeline, the menu could vanish as soon as it opened when you right-clicked near an edge. It now stays open until you click elsewhere, press Esc or scroll the page.

StreamWave 0.8.1
Fixed
- Right-click no longer shows the browser menu ("Save image as", "Copy image") on Windows. The browser context menu is switched off across the app. Text boxes keep their normal Cut / Copy / Paste menu.
- Browser shortcuts that make no sense in an app are blocked: F5 / Ctrl+R reload, Ctrl+F find, Ctrl+U view source, page zoom (Ctrl+= / Ctrl+- / Ctrl+0 / Ctrl+scroll), Alt+← / → back and forward, and the dev tools keys. Ctrl+P no longer tries to print; it is still StreamWave's Pause. All the app's own hotkeys work as before.
- An empty label track was drawn only a sliver wide. It now spans the whole timeline.
New: right-click menu
- On a waveform or clip:
- Cut, Copy, Paste, Delete, Split, Join clips, Select whole clip, Add label here, Add marker here, Trim to selection and Silence selection.
- Each item shows its shortcut, and items that don't apply are greyed out.
- If you right-click outside the current selection, the cursor moves to the spot you clicked first.
- Effects ▸ lists every effect.
- Picking one opens its settings and applies it to just the selection. StreamWave renders that range to a new WAV and swaps it in as one undoable step, so your original files are never changed.
- Choose "Add to track effects instead" to keep the effect live in the track's chain.
- The submenu also has Fade in, Fade out, Normalize to −1 dB and Studio Sound.
- Track ▸ has Rename, Mute, Solo, Waveform / Spectrogram and Delete track. The same menu opens when you right-click the track header, and double-clicking a track name renames it.
- Label tracks have their own menu: edit, select or delete a label, add a label, copy labels to markers, export labels, and rename or delete the track.
- Empty timeline area: paste as a new track, import audio, import an Audacity project, or add a label track.
- The menus can be used entirely from the keyboard: arrows, Home/End, Enter, → / ← for submenus, Esc, and a letter to jump to an item.

StreamWave 0.8.0
New: Audacity-style editing (batch 1)
- Spectrogram view: switch any track between waveform and spectrogram with the 〰 / ▤ button, or use View → Waveform / Spectrogram (Ctrl+Shift+G) for the selected tracks. You can choose a log or linear frequency scale and Classic, Inferno or Greyscale colours. It's good for spotting hum, hiss and plosives.
- Multi-track selection: drag up or down across tracks, or Ctrl-click a track to add or remove it. Ctrl+A selects every track. Cut, copy, paste, delete, split and join then apply to all selected tracks.
- Label tracks:
- Ctrl+B adds a label at the cursor or a range label for the selection. Type the text and press Enter.
- Labels can be edited and deleted, and they move with the audio when you edit.
- File → Export Labels… saves Audacity-compatible text, and Import Labels… reads it back.
- → Markers turns labels into markers, which become chapters on export and Send back to video.
- Split and join clips: Ctrl+K splits at the cursor (or at both ends of a selection), and Ctrl+J joins the clips in the selection.
- Ctrl+I stays Import Audio, which is why Split is on Ctrl+K rather than Audacity's Ctrl+I.
- Double-click a clip to select it.
- All tracks now share one timeline, so selections line up across tracks.
Fixed
- Audio cut at arbitrary points now renders sample-exactly. Before, a cut could drop or double a single sample.
