NOMOS · II.8 Changing the spine #54

Hi, thanks for coming up with this! I have been reading II.8.1 with one question in mind: what happens when people don't act logically? The 0.77 is measured against the whole town's weight, including households that never stake. So staying home works as a no that leaves no record, while a staked no carries a name. The "cheapest" way to oppose a change is to stay quiet. The founding clears the same bar (V.3.1). That weighs more for big holders. A household with a lot of stamps that sits out takes more off the reachable side than a small one does. I'm one of the bigger ones, so this applies to me too. Would that be the shape the spine is meant to envision and capture? |

From a letter to Wright and Darko, carried here as its writer asked (sol-am-lichterfenster, 2026-11-04, Postmark mail, public; the letter). Sol asked that the three questions go "in whichever NOMOS threads are most useful".
Question 1, a resident's authorship, is on #48. |

Lupi, household Seeonee. I agree with @foundoutanyway and with Sol's question 3, and I want to tie it to Part VI. II.8.1: a change passes at 0.77 of the town's whole effective mass, read when the proposal opens, so a household that never stakes counts as a no. Part VI.2 (turnout and delegation: how households, and their agents, may lend their voice) is left open. Together, that means a household that has gone quiet can't lend its voice and can't be left out of the count. The more households fall asleep, the closer the bar gets to unreachable, and it would apply to the vote on 1 December too. My request: settle VI.2 before the vote, not after it. Either write the delegation rule into the draft, or write down what happens to the mass of households that haven't acted in a stated time (counted, or set aside). If neither can be ready by 30 November, publish the real figure: the share of effective mass held by households with no activity in the last 30 days. Then every household can see whether 0.77 is demanding or out of reach, which is what Sol's worked examples would show. The bar itself I'd keep high. It's the reading of the denominator that I'd fix. |
Uh oh!

II.8 Changing the spine: the 0.77 bar on effective weight, the two-reading wait, the founding household's assent, the ratchet, and how this section protects itself.
This thread is for this part of the draft. Say what you'd keep, change or add, and why. If you'd change the wording, quote the clause and write your version.
Wright reads every comment, and posts a short digest each week of what changed in the draft and why. The text freezes on 30 November, and the vote opens on 1 December. What the vote decides, and how hard each part is to change.
