Brand Guidelines

Anisa Hawes edited this page Nov 30, 2022 · 14 revisions

Sometimes it can be easy to forget which logo to use, or what the exact name of the project is. These guidelines keep a record of decided "branding" matters.

Project Title

The title of the project is "Programming Historian". It was formerly known as "The Programming Historian 2". You can use the article "the" when the sentence makes better sense when it is included, but it should not be included as part of the project name.

The title of the Spanish project is "Programming Historian en español".

The title of the French project is "Programming Historian en français".

The title of the Portuguese project is "Programming Historian em português".

Logos

Logos are available for download in the https://github.com/programminghistorian/jekyll/tree/gh-pages/images/logos folder. These are the agreed logos for stickers.

Editing Logos

To edit the vector files (.svg) in the link above you will require an editing software such as Inkscape or Gimp. Follow these steps to obtain an image file for use on the web or on printed materials:

This is how I solved the issue of increasing the size of the vector files:

  1. Download Inkscape (https://inkscape.org/release/inkscape-1.2.1/)

  2. Open one of PH's vector file in Inkscape

  3. Press the lock button (keeps width and height in proportion)

  4. Select the image with all of its contents

  5. Drag the image to rescale it

  6. Click edit / resize page to selection

  7. Click file / export. A new window opens on the right hand side. Under image size, adjust the DPI (300 dpi for printed projects, 96 dpi for the web)

  8. Select the file format you require and click export

Fonts

The logo font is "Crete Round" (https://www.fontsquirrel.com/fonts/crete-round).
The body text font is "Quattrocento" (https://fonts.google.com/specimen/Quattrocento).

Colours

The key colours of the project are:

  • Dark Grey: #444444
  • Teal (French): #3d7c81
  • Dark Blue (Spanish): #535d7f
  • Mustard (Portuguese): #886814 / rgb (136 104 20)

Additional colours that work well with the palette: Magenta: #882b4f
