New features: find and add people/rooms/spaces, a new Room Info pane, better sync status indicator, improved Android performance (120 Hz!) and better battery life, and also 32-bit Android support.

Highlights from this release

  • 👥 Search for and add people (and rooms and spaces, like before)
    • You can search public directories of rooms and spaces too (see Settings to modify)
    • Find someone by name or user ID to start a direct message with them
  • ℹ️ The new Room Info pane shows a room's details and options
  • 🔄 The sync indicator now shows when Robrix is catching up, and when it was last synced
  • Light or dark themes now apply to system UI too, like window title bars, soft keyboards, menus, etc
  • ⚡ 🔋 Android performance and efficiency improvements: 120Hz buttery smooth refresh rate with no wasted battery while idle
  • For older Android devices, we now build a 32-bit APK, and fix sharing of files on Android 8 & 9
  • Lots of misc UI & UX improvements:
    • It's now very obvious which tab is currently selected
    • The Home tab is now close-able and only shows up when no other rooms are open
    • Opening a new room focuses the message input so you can send a message with just one click
    • You can now disable click-and-drag scrolling (with a mouse/trackpad; touch scrolling is always enabled)
    • Reply previews have a new curved arc pointing to the replied-to message
  • Some minor bug fixes:
    • SVG images now obey the max thumbnail height and can be opened in the full-screen image viewer
    • Line breaks are now always preserved, both in HTML formatted and plain text messages
  • Linux: CPU usage is even less now when Robrix is idle
    • And the AppImage issue on Wayland is fixed, no workarounds needed

Fixes to the Matrix SDK

  • Coming back to Robrix after a while no longer shows a brief "Cannot reach the Matrix homeserver" error

Downloading and Installing Robrix

macOS

Download and open the .dmg, then drag Robrix to your Applications folder as normal.

iOS and iPadOS

Join the TestFlight beta at https://testflight.apple.com/join/cQPRgdVY.

Android

Download and then sideload Robrix-1.0.0-beta.5-android-aarch64.apk. You'll need to allow installing from unknown sources.

If your Android device is 32-bit (armv8l or armv7), download Robrix-1.0.0-beta.5-android-armv7.apk instead. This is brand new, so please let us know if it works for you!

Windows 10 and 11

Download and run the installer robrix-1.0.0-beta.5-windows-x86_64.exe.

Linux

Ubuntu or Debian (and similar) distros.

Note that the robrix_1.0.0-beta.5_x86_64.tar.gz and robrix_1.0.0-beta.5_aarch64.tar.gz files are just published for use with community-maintained AUR packages (see robrix-bin and robrix-git in that package manager). We can't guarantee they are correct or up-to-date.

AppImage (for any Linux).

Download robrix-1.0.0-beta.5-x86_64.AppImage on x86_64 or robrix-1.0.0-beta.5-aarch64.AppImage on ARM, and then run:

Changes we made to Makepad since the last release

As always, a significant amount of our effort is spent upstreaming improvements & fixes into Makepad, such that Robrix and everyone else benefits from them.

  • Android: scrolling and animations run at the display's full refresh rate (like 120Hz), and an idle app no longer wakes up 60 times a second. Makepad also does a lot less work for each frame, on every platform. (makepad#TODO, from android_120hz_perf_robrix)
  • Linux: an idle app no longer wakes up 125 times a second. (makepad#1338)
  • Text wraps like it does on the web, and drawing text is faster. This also fixed a crash when typing right-to-left text, like Arabic or Hebrew. (makepad#1336)
  • A blank line in formatted text is now as tall as a regular line, like in a web browser. (makepad#1355)
  • On phones and tablets, a drag that starts on a button scrolls instead of pressing it, and toggles flip when you lift your finger instead of when you touch them. (makepad#TODO, from touch_scroll_and_redraw_fixes_robrix)
  • In the light theme, selected text in code views, like Robrix's View Source dialog, is easy to see now. (makepad#TODO, from dark_mode_fixes_robrix)
  • Desktop: the dock keeps track of which tab you're in across all its panes, so Robrix can highlight it. (makepad#1323)
  • Desktop: the dock can hide its tab bar, which is how Robrix shows its Home screen when no rooms are open. (makepad#TODO, from dock_hide_tab_bar_robrix and dock_tab_clicked_robrix)
  • SVG images are sized like any other image, and clicking one works now. (makepad#1337)
  • Apps can turn off click-and-drag scrolling with a mouse, and horizontal lists can scroll with a regular mouse wheel. (makepad#1349)
  • The OS's own UI, like the iOS keyboard and Android's copy/paste menu, now follows the app's light or dark theme, and Robrix no longer flashes white when you switch back to it in dark mode. This also fixed a crash on launch on Android 8.0. (makepad#1351)
  • Android: support for 32-bit ARM phones, plus a built-in file provider that lets apps share files on Android 8 and 9. (makepad#1339)
