I'm working on a repository that is quite olds, and from nothing I found myself with this error:

It's important to mention that we are using python 3.8
I've updated pytest to v5.0.0.

I was wondering if others had this same issue, again from nothing, and how could I debug and confirm the error comes from our side or there is something going on.

I found some errors and bugs from more recent versions of python with similar issues/errors.

Very likely, in which case you need to upgrade to pytest 6.2.5.

Hmm strange, you say you are using python 3.8, however the traceback points to python3.10:

Are you setting up a virtualenv?

you are right... my Dockerfile is using the python 3.8 image but we are using the gitlab runner which I assume now uses python 3.10...
Apologies, my mistake not seeing that. Still, the issue remains.
Is it possible this issue/error could be related to the bug that was found on April?

Very likely, in which case you need to upgrade to pytest 6.2.5.

Cool!

Just a heads up, by using Python 3.10 you will probably need to update a good number of packages (that last traceback suggests you might need to update jinja2).

Or upgrade your pytest, given that this issue has been fixed some 1.5 years ago...

python 3.10.9 + pytest 7.2.2

giving me the same error :(

@MahsaSeifikar @Subramanian-R-Needl This issue has been fixed ages ago, you're probably not actually running the pytest version you think you are running. Nobody will be able to help you with zero information. Consider opening a new discussion with the full output you're getting.
