0.3.0
What's new in vanilla 0.3.0.
- Updated Qt version to 6.11 (Qt5 is no longer supported).
- Changed the build system to CMake (the qmake project is kept for this release only).
- Implemented EdgeWebView, which hosts Microsoft Edge WebView2 directly (Windows x64).
- Removed WebKitView, QuickWebKitView, GraphicsWebKitView and TridentView.
- Implemented the settings page (vanilla://settings) as a tab.
- Implemented the directory settings page (vanilla://directory), inherited down the tree.
- Implemented MiniMap, a diagrammatic scrollbar of the page (disabled by default).
- Implemented Theme, following the Light/Dark colours of the desktop.
- Changed settings and session files from XML to JSON (older files are still read).
- Implemented import of bookmarks from XBEL, Netscape HTML, Chrome and Firefox.
- Implemented export of bookmarks to XBEL and Netscape HTML.
- Implemented a user agent table with per-directory switching.
- Implemented CertificatePolicy for certificate errors.
- Changed the cookie store to write the jar one way, so a running session is no longer
rewound by what was saved. - Implemented download names built from the declared header (RFC 5987), one path
component, spellable on Windows, with the extension of the declared type. - Improved the QML WebEngine view: block rules, Do Not Track, session cookies and the
permission settings now reach its profile too. - Removed TLS 1.0 and TLS 1.1 from the protocols offered.
- Improved handling of display scaling.
- Reorganized the sources into src/app, src/core, src/input, src/ui, src/view and src/gadgets.
- Added unit tests; 37 of them run under ctest.
- The package no longer ships FFmpeg. Local video and audio play through Windows Media,
so the formats which play are the ones Windows itself supports (H.264/MP4 is verified). - The licences of what the package carries are in licenses/ (Qt and Qt WebEngine under
LGPLv3, Chromium, and the Edge WebView2 loader).
Notes
- Windows 10 / 11 x64. Extract the zip and run vanilla.exe; settings and sessions are kept
in data/ beside the executable, so removing the directory removes everything. - The Edge WebView2 runtime is not bundled. Without it only the Edge view is unavailable.
- The bundled Qt WebEngine is the official build, which carries no proprietary codecs:
in that view H.264 and AAC do not play, while VP8, VP9, AV1, Opus and MP3 do.
The Edge view uses the Edge WebView2 runtime installed on the machine and brings its
own codecs, so a page which needs H.264 can be opened there. - If the Visual C++ runtime is missing, run the bundled vc_redist.x64.exe.
- The executable is not code-signed, so SmartScreen may warn on the first run
("More info" then "Run anyway"). Check the archive against the hash below.
