0.3.3
What's new in vanilla 0.3.3
- A start page,
vanilla://start, opens for new tabs and on the first run instead of a
blank page or google.com. It has a search box with a choice of search engine, the tabs
you looked at recently as cards (with the directories above each tab, a button to send it
to the trash), and a Tab history: every tab you opened, by date, with the closed ones
marked "Trash" and restorable with a click, check boxes to delete closed entries in bulk,
search, and keyboard navigation. The default size of the trash is now 500. Search
results on the start page and in the settings show the matching text in bold blue. - "Translucent window" (formerly "Translucent tab bar") makes the whole window frame
translucent over a blurred desktop (acrylic) while the pages stay opaque; the start page
and the settings page show the blur through. "Translucent menus, panels and dialogs" does
the same for those. Both are off by default. - "Graphics API (WebEngineView)" now defaults to OpenGL on Windows, so the window stays
translucent after a Qt WebEngine tab is opened. If the window stays blank or is slow,
choose Auto (Direct3D 11) there. - Site permissions (camera, microphone, location, notifications…) are kept in one table
shared by the Edge and the Qt WebEngine views, and the settings page lists them by site,
switches and removes them. Permissions granted before this version are not carried over. - The Edge view gets "Tracking prevention" (Off, Basic, Balanced, Strict) and "Microsoft
Defender SmartScreen" in the settings. - Extensions: a setting chooses which tabs extensions see (all tabs, the tabs in the
current tab's directory, or loaded tabs). Extension names follow the UI language in the Qt WebEngine view, and
an extension'sruntime.onInstalledis delivered again after its registration is
renewed, so DeepL's context menu appears there too. - Downloads: the history in the settings has "Open the page it came from" for each entry.
In the Edge view, a download keeps going when the tab that started it is closed, and the
history records how it really ended. - Private directories and profiles keep less on disk: SSL exceptions answered there and
favicons are not stored, the thumbnails and back/forward history of private tabs stay in
memory, and private tabs that are closed skip the trash. The address and title of open
private tabs are still saved with the tree, as before. - Menus: the font and spacing match the tab bar, a context menu shows the key that runs an
entry where it was opened, and the menus of the tab list, the trash and the tab bar share
one order. Moving several nodes to the trash shows a notice. Windows' own window menu (right click on the title bar, Alt+Space) follows the
colour scheme and carries the application menu. - Trash: the trash list can delete closed tabs permanently (the × button and the delete
commands, after a confirmation), and a restore button sits beside the ×. - The tab list blurs the page behind it ("Blur the page behind the tab list", on by
default). While it is on, a Qt WebEngine page behind the list is shown as a still
picture, as the other views already were. - The settings page was reorganised: settings moved to where one would look for them,
long sections have subheadings, groups are separated in the list on the left,
explanations say only what the label does not, settings that do not apply are disabled,
and changing one that takes effect at the next start offers to restart. Opening and
updating the page no longer flickers. - The tab bar and the toolbar have rounded handles; the docks of the inspector and the side
panel draw their own title bars in the colours of the bars, and the Edge inspector no
longer leaves a frame inside the dock. - Edge view: tabs show the site's icon; Ctrl+C / X / V and Paste in the context menu go to
the page, so files and images can be pasted; link tooltips no longer drift after moving
the window; the dark blank page shown while a view is recreated matches the background.
Fixes
- Closing a tab selects the most recently used tab again in the Edge view as well.
- In the Qt WebEngine views (widgets and Quick), a new tab's search box has real focus, so
the caret shows and the IME works; Ctrl+T opens the new tab in front instead of behind. - Hidden Qt Quick WebEngine tabs are reported as hidden to the page (
visibilitychange). - A directory's "Auto load" can no longer be chosen while "Load tabs ahead in the
background" is off, since it does nothing then. - A crash in the tab bar while removing items that were still being drawn.
- Extension toolbar buttons kept working after clicking another extension's button
(Vimium together with uBlock Origin Lite). - An extension updated by Chrome no longer leaves its settings behind under the old
version. - Tab previews and popups no longer stay on screen after a menu closes or after switching
to another application. - With the translucent window, the Qt WebEngine settings page no longer covers the tab list.
- Thumbnails are retaken after loading even when the tree bar is hidden, and the Edge view
leaves full screen when it is hidden. - Starting with a large tree and Edge extensions is faster.
Notes
- Windows 10 / 11 x64. Extract the zip and run vanilla.exe; settings and sessions are kept
in data/ beside the executable, so removing the directory removes everything. - If vanilla.exe says VCRUNTIME140.dll is missing, run the bundled vc_redist.x64.exe
once, then start vanilla again. - The Edge WebView2 runtime is not bundled. Windows 11 has it; without it the Qt WebEngine
view is used. - Qt 6.12.0 and Qt WebEngine 6.140.0 (Chromium 140.0.7339.225) are unchanged from 0.3.2.
The bundled Qt WebEngine is the official build, which carries no proprietary codecs:
in that view H.264 and AAC do not play, while VP8, VP9, AV1, Opus and MP3 do.
The Edge view brings its own codecs. - The bundled Qt WebEngine does not carry vanilla's patches either. The patches are in
tools/patches/ for those who build Qt WebEngine themselves (web-accessible-resources,
isolated-world-unsafe-eval, ime-to-active-widget). The Edge view needs none of them. - The executable is not code-signed, so SmartScreen may warn on the first run
("More info" then "Run anyway"). Check the archive against the hash below.

0.3.2
What's new in vanilla 0.3.2
- Passwords can be saved. In the Qt WebEngine views (widgets and Quick) vanilla asks when a
sign-in form is sent, keeps the password in the operating system's credential store
(Windows Credential Manager) and fills it in when you click the field or choose the
account from the ↓ menu. The Edge view uses WebView2's own password autosave. The
setting "Offer to save passwords" is on; nothing is saved without a "Yes". - A Saved passwords page in the settings lists the sites and user names (never the
passwords) and removes one or all of them. The Edge view's passwords are removed by
"Remove all" too. - Downloads got a toolbar button with a popup, as in Chrome and Edge. The button shows
while a download runs, for a minute after the last one finished and while the popup is
open; the popup lists the newest downloads with their progress, Open, Show in folder and
Cancel. A Downloads page in the settings keeps the last 500 downloads of every view. - The Edge view honours "ask for each download" and the download folder settings instead
of saving silently. - The directory settings moved from their own page into the settings, with the tree of
directories above them.vanilla://directorysays where they went. - The settings page shows display names for the choices, lays out narrow windows in one
column, centres its body, works with Reset for the view preferences and fonts, and About
shows the version, Qt, Qt WebEngine (Chromium), the WebView2 runtime and the data
folder. The display types are Normal, Recursive and Expandable. The settings tab has a
gear icon. - Dialogs were reworked: a page's alert, confirm and prompt show a globe and the host in
the title and slide in at the top centre of the view; all dialogs share the look of the
panels; the question about saving a password is modeless, in the top right corner, and
answers "No" by itself after ten seconds. The HTTP authentication dialog names the
origin or proxy that asks, so a background tab cannot pass itself off as the page you
are looking at. - The context menu of the address bar, the command line and the dialog fields has the same
entries, order, words and keys as the text menu of a page. - Starting with a large tree (20,000 tabs) is much faster: the window appears as an empty
shell before the tree is read (1.2 s → 0.56 s to the window), the tree is read in about
half the time, auto loading no longer freezes the window for seconds, and the window no
longer flashes white while it comes up. - MiniMap draws pages that scroll inside an element rather than the document (ChatGPT,
Claude), skips the content the engine hides (closed<details>), and follows elements
that scroll from the bottom. - Edge view: the keyboard goes back to the page after a permission dialog or after
switching from another application; Cancel in a permission dialog denies only that
request instead of bringing up Edge's own prompt; single keys keep working after
switching categories in the settings page. - Opening a link in a new tab from a Qt WebEngine view sends the Referer the page's
referrer policy allows, so links from Google and Wikipedia load instead of failing with
ERR_BLOCKED_BY_CLIENT. - Extensions: the declarativeNetRequest redirect of an extension is limited to its host
permissions, as in Chrome. docs/EXTENSIONS.md lists which extension APIs work on each
engine, by namespace and by method; the table is generated from the compatibility layer
itself and the Edge column was measured on WebView2. - "Open with default browser" passes web addresses and files that are not programs, and
nothing else. A second vanilla hands its command line only to a vanilla of the same
user. Titles written by pages or extensions are shown as plain text in tooltips. - Qt's warnings are written to
qt-warnings.login the data folder. - The Japanese UI was proofread throughout, and key names read as printed on the keyboard
(Home キー, Page Up キー).
Fixes
- Closing a window after expanding or folding directories in the tab list no longer
crashes. - Closing a tab with the trash size 0 and auto save off no longer crashes.
- Starting with extensions registered no longer crashes while the Qt WebEngine view is
restored. - Vimium's J and K no longer jump to the ends of a large tree.
- In the vertical tab bar, a tab created in an expanded directory out of view is drawn at
the level of its siblings. - The tree bar's scroll buttons follow the colour scheme when it is switched at run time.
- Eight view preferences, among them Force dark mode, are applied again when set or reset.
- Right-clicking the address bar keeps the selection, so Copy is offered.
- Directory settings opened from the overview or the menu open the directory you asked
for. - The default of "views kept" is 10 and of "trash entries" 100 instead of showing
"default" for a value of -1; existing settings keep what they hold. - Two Qt warnings that appeared at every start are gone.
- The tab bar no longer touches items that are still animating out after their layer is
gone, which could crash while closing tabs.
Notes
- Windows 10 / 11 x64. Extract the zip and run vanilla.exe; settings and sessions are kept
in data/ beside the executable, so removing the directory removes everything. - If vanilla.exe says VCRUNTIME140.dll is missing, run the bundled vc_redist.x64.exe

view is used. - Qt 6.12.0 and Qt WebEngine 6.140.0 (Chromium 140.0.7339.225) are unchanged from 0.3.1.

0.3.1
What's new in vanilla 0.3.1
- Updated Qt to 6.12.0 and Qt WebEngine to 6.140.0 (based on Chromium 140.0.7339.225,
with security fixes up to Chromium 152.0.7977.83). - On Windows the default view is now the Edge view (WebView2). A directory still gets the
Qt WebEngine view when it names one (web), and every directory falls back to it when
the WebView2 runtime is not installed. - Implemented Chrome extensions. Register an unpacked extension folder (Chrome's own
Extensions folder works), then enable, pin and open its popup from the Extensions
button in the address bar. Extensions run in the Edge view and in the Qt WebEngine
views, but not in private profiles. - Implemented an extension compatibility layer, on by default. Vanilla loads a copy of each
extension with scripts added that fill in what Qt WebEngine leaves out: tabs, storage,
messaging, bookmarks, history, downloads, context menus, commands, notifications,
alarms, userScripts, identity, side panels and declarativeNetRequest. It was tried with
Vimium, uBlock Origin Lite, Dark Reader, SingleFile, Stands and DeepL. Some features
still need a Qt WebEngine with Vanilla's patches (see Notes). - Extensions' side panels open as docks of the window, for the whole window or for one tab.
- Right-clicking an extension's button lists, as in Chrome, its name (opens its site or store
page), its own menu items, pin or unpin, and Manage extensions. - Implemented a Keys and mouse page in the settings: a cheat sheet of every key, mouse and
gesture binding that can be edited in place. - Single-key shortcuts can be switched off in the settings, and are off by default.
- Mouse gestures can be set per directory.
- A directory id can hold a normal and a private profile at the same time.
- New settings: the graphics API of the views (Auto, Direct3D 11/12, Vulkan, OpenGL,
Software), and Chromium switches (one per line; passed to the Edge view too). - The main window can be drawn with the graphics API too (off by default), so that it is
not rebuilt the first time a Qt WebEngine view is shown. It is off because game overlays
such as GeForce Experience take such a window for a game. - The settings are regrouped by topic within each category.
- Changed defaults: media needs a click before it plays, smooth scrolling is on, the tab
list animates, access keys give every link a label of its own (multi stroke labels),
and Accept-Language follows the languages of the computer.
Existing settings files keep the values they already hold. - The tab list and tab bar were reworked: the current tab has an accent line, folding a
directory animates, and the Straight style was removed. - MiniMap now draws the inside of frames and handles very long pages.
- Access keys now see elements inside shadow DOM, and single keys no longer take keys
typed into an input inside shadow DOM. - The Edge view shows why it could not be created, with what to do about it, and reads
edge://addresses. - Removed the reader for the XML settings and sessions of 0.2.x: start 0.3.0 once to
convert them before moving to 0.3.1. Bookmark files in XML are still imported. - Removed the qmake project. CMake is the only build; the Linux build and its 60 tests
pass as well. - The package no longer carries QML modules that are not used.
Fixes
- The mouse back button no longer works twice in one press.
- The tab bar scrolls by the amount of the wheel or touchpad instead of one tab per notch,
and a tab's preview is no longer read again from disk each time the pointer moves. - Several new tabs opened at once in the vertical tab bar are placed in order, and the
children of a folded directory no longer show in it. - A link that turns into a download is no longer reported as a failed load, and the Edge
view no longer opens a tab of its own for a download. - Sending some forms from a web page no longer freezes vanilla.
- A page's zoom no longer turns into 80% by itself.
- The Edge view keeps the keyboard after switching views or clicking the address bar,
and YouTube's settings menu no longer closes at once. - Prime Video plays in the Edge view.
- The Edge view honours "media needs a click before it plays". YouTube may still start
playing in some cases. - A failed load reports the page's address instead of
<strong>$1</strong>. - On a computer with more than one display language (for example Japanese, then English),
the menus no longer come out half in the second language. - The notice about a page going full screen shows when the OpenGL graphics API is used.
- The zoom steps stay within what the engine can show.
Notes
-
Windows 10 / 11 x64. Extract the zip and run vanilla.exe; settings and sessions are kept
in data/ beside the executable, so removing the directory removes everything. -
If vanilla.exe says VCRUNTIME140.dll is missing, run the bundled vc_redist.x64.exe
once, then start vanilla again. -
The Edge WebView2 runtime is not bundled. Windows 11 has it; without it the Qt WebEngine

The bundled Qt WebEngine is the official build, which carries no proprietary codecs:

The Edge view brings its own codecs. -
The bundled Qt WebEngine does not carry Vanilla's patches either. The patches are in
tools/patches/ for those who build Qt WebEngine themselves:- web-accessible-resources: an extension's page shown inside a web page, such as
Vimium's Vomnibar and HUD. - isolated-world-unsafe-eval:
scripting.executeScriptwith a function in the
Qt WebEngine view (SingleFile, for example). - ime-to-active-widget: typing through an input method into an iframe of another
process, such as the Vomnibar.
The Edge view needs none of them.
- web-accessible-resources: an extension's page shown inside a web page, such as
-
The executable is not code-signed, so SmartScreen may warn on the first run
("More info" then "Run anyway"). Check the archive against the hash below.

0.3.0
What's new in vanilla 0.3.0.
- Updated Qt version to 6.11 (Qt5 is no longer supported).
- Changed the build system to CMake (the qmake project is kept for this release only).
- Implemented EdgeWebView, which hosts Microsoft Edge WebView2 directly (Windows x64).
- Removed WebKitView, QuickWebKitView, GraphicsWebKitView and TridentView.
- Implemented the settings page (vanilla://settings) as a tab.
- Implemented the directory settings page (vanilla://directory), inherited down the tree.
- Implemented MiniMap, a diagrammatic scrollbar of the page (disabled by default).
- Implemented Theme, following the Light/Dark colours of the desktop.
- Changed settings and session files from XML to JSON (older files are still read).
- Implemented import of bookmarks from XBEL, Netscape HTML, Chrome and Firefox.
- Implemented export of bookmarks to XBEL and Netscape HTML.
- Implemented a user agent table with per-directory switching.
- Implemented CertificatePolicy for certificate errors.
- Changed the cookie store to write the jar one way, so a running session is no longer
rewound by what was saved. - Implemented download names built from the declared header (RFC 5987), one path
component, spellable on Windows, with the extension of the declared type. - Improved the QML WebEngine view: block rules, Do Not Track, session cookies and the
permission settings now reach its profile too. - Removed TLS 1.0 and TLS 1.1 from the protocols offered.
- Improved handling of display scaling.
- Reorganized the sources into src/app, src/core, src/input, src/ui, src/view and src/gadgets.
- Added unit tests; 37 of them run under ctest.
- The package no longer ships FFmpeg. Local video and audio play through Windows Media,
so the formats which play are the ones Windows itself supports (H.264/MP4 is verified). - The licences of what the package carries are in licenses/ (Qt and Qt WebEngine under
LGPLv3, Chromium, and the Edge WebView2 loader).
Notes
- Windows 10 / 11 x64. Extract the zip and run vanilla.exe; settings and sessions are kept
in data/ beside the executable, so removing the directory removes everything. - The Edge WebView2 runtime is not bundled. Without it only the Edge view is unavailable.
- The bundled Qt WebEngine is the official build, which carries no proprietary codecs:
in that view H.264 and AAC do not play, while VP8, VP9, AV1, Opus and MP3 do.
The Edge view uses the Edge WebView2 runtime installed on the machine and brings its
own codecs, so a page which needs H.264 can be opened there. - If the Visual C++ runtime is missing, run the bundled vc_redist.x64.exe.
- The executable is not code-signed, so SmartScreen may warn on the first run
("More info" then "Run anyway"). Check the archive against the hash below.
