What's new in vanilla 0.3.1

  • Updated Qt to 6.12.0 and Qt WebEngine to 6.140.0 (based on Chromium 140.0.7339.225,
with security fixes up to Chromium 152.0.7977.83).
  • On Windows the default view is now the Edge view (WebView2). A directory still gets the
Qt WebEngine view when it names one (web), and every directory falls back to it when
the WebView2 runtime is not installed.
  • Implemented Chrome extensions. Register an unpacked extension folder (Chrome's own
Extensions folder works), then enable, pin and open its popup from the Extensions
button in the address bar. Extensions run in the Edge view and in the Qt WebEngine
views, but not in private profiles.
  • Implemented an extension compatibility layer, on by default. Vanilla loads a copy of each
extension with scripts added that fill in what Qt WebEngine leaves out: tabs, storage,
messaging, bookmarks, history, downloads, context menus, commands, notifications,
alarms, userScripts, identity, side panels and declarativeNetRequest. It was tried with
Vimium, uBlock Origin Lite, Dark Reader, SingleFile, Stands and DeepL. Some features
still need a Qt WebEngine with Vanilla's patches (see Notes).
  • Extensions' side panels open as docks of the window, for the whole window or for one tab.
  • Right-clicking an extension's button lists, as in Chrome, its name (opens its site or store
page), its own menu items, pin or unpin, and Manage extensions.
  • Implemented a Keys and mouse page in the settings: a cheat sheet of every key, mouse and
gesture binding that can be edited in place.
  • Single-key shortcuts can be switched off in the settings, and are off by default.
  • Mouse gestures can be set per directory.
  • A directory id can hold a normal and a private profile at the same time.
  • New settings: the graphics API of the views (Auto, Direct3D 11/12, Vulkan, OpenGL,
Software), and Chromium switches (one per line; passed to the Edge view too).
  • The main window can be drawn with the graphics API too (off by default), so that it is
not rebuilt the first time a Qt WebEngine view is shown. It is off because game overlays
such as GeForce Experience take such a window for a game.
  • The settings are regrouped by topic within each category.
  • Changed defaults: media needs a click before it plays, smooth scrolling is on, the tab
list animates, access keys give every link a label of its own (multi stroke labels),
and Accept-Language follows the languages of the computer.
Existing settings files keep the values they already hold.
  • The tab list and tab bar were reworked: the current tab has an accent line, folding a
directory animates, and the Straight style was removed.
  • MiniMap now draws the inside of frames and handles very long pages.
  • Access keys now see elements inside shadow DOM, and single keys no longer take keys
typed into an input inside shadow DOM.
  • The Edge view shows why it could not be created, with what to do about it, and reads
    edge:// addresses.
  • Removed the reader for the XML settings and sessions of 0.2.x: start 0.3.0 once to
convert them before moving to 0.3.1. Bookmark files in XML are still imported.
  • Removed the qmake project. CMake is the only build; the Linux build and its 60 tests
    pass as well.
  • The package no longer carries QML modules that are not used.

Fixes

  • The mouse back button no longer works twice in one press.
  • The tab bar scrolls by the amount of the wheel or touchpad instead of one tab per notch,
and a tab's preview is no longer read again from disk each time the pointer moves.
  • Several new tabs opened at once in the vertical tab bar are placed in order, and the
children of a folded directory no longer show in it.
  • A link that turns into a download is no longer reported as a failed load, and the Edge
view no longer opens a tab of its own for a download.
  • Sending some forms from a web page no longer freezes vanilla.
  • A page's zoom no longer turns into 80% by itself.
  • The Edge view keeps the keyboard after switching views or clicking the address bar,
and YouTube's settings menu no longer closes at once.
  • Prime Video plays in the Edge view.
  • The Edge view honours "media needs a click before it plays". YouTube may still start
    playing in some cases.
  • A failed load reports the page's address instead of <strong>$1</strong>.
  • On a computer with more than one display language (for example Japanese, then English),
the menus no longer come out half in the second language.
  • The notice about a page going full screen shows when the OpenGL graphics API is used.
  • The zoom steps stay within what the engine can show.

Notes

  • Windows 10 / 11 x64. Extract the zip and run vanilla.exe; settings and sessions are kept
in data/ beside the executable, so removing the directory removes everything.

  • If vanilla.exe says VCRUNTIME140.dll is missing, run the bundled vc_redist.x64.exe
    once
    , then start vanilla again.

  • The Edge WebView2 runtime is not bundled. Windows 11 has it; without it the Qt WebEngine
    view is used.

  • The bundled Qt WebEngine is the official build, which carries no proprietary codecs:
in that view H.264 and AAC do not play, while VP8, VP9, AV1, Opus and MP3 do.
The Edge view brings its own codecs.

  • The bundled Qt WebEngine does not carry Vanilla's patches either. The patches are in
tools/patches/ for those who build Qt WebEngine themselves:

    • web-accessible-resources: an extension's page shown inside a web page, such as
      Vimium's Vomnibar and HUD.
    • isolated-world-unsafe-eval: scripting.executeScript with a function in the
Qt WebEngine view (SingleFile, for example).
    • ime-to-active-widget: typing through an input method into an iframe of another
      process, such as the Vomnibar.

The Edge view needs none of them.

  • The executable is not code-signed, so SmartScreen may warn on the first run
("More info" then "Run anyway"). Check the archive against the hash below.
