0.3.2
What's new in vanilla 0.3.2
- Passwords can be saved. In the Qt WebEngine views (widgets and Quick) vanilla asks when a
sign-in form is sent, keeps the password in the operating system's credential store
(Windows Credential Manager) and fills it in when you click the field or choose the
account from the ↓ menu. The Edge view uses WebView2's own password autosave. The
setting "Offer to save passwords" is on; nothing is saved without a "Yes". - A Saved passwords page in the settings lists the sites and user names (never the
passwords) and removes one or all of them. The Edge view's passwords are removed by
"Remove all" too. - Downloads got a toolbar button with a popup, as in Chrome and Edge. The button shows
while a download runs, for a minute after the last one finished and while the popup is
open; the popup lists the newest downloads with their progress, Open, Show in folder and
Cancel. A Downloads page in the settings keeps the last 500 downloads of every view. - The Edge view honours "ask for each download" and the download folder settings instead
of saving silently. - The directory settings moved from their own page into the settings, with the tree of
directories above them.vanilla://directorysays where they went. - The settings page shows display names for the choices, lays out narrow windows in one
column, centres its body, works with Reset for the view preferences and fonts, and About
shows the version, Qt, Qt WebEngine (Chromium), the WebView2 runtime and the data
folder. The display types are Normal, Recursive and Expandable. The settings tab has a
gear icon. - Dialogs were reworked: a page's alert, confirm and prompt show a globe and the host in
the title and slide in at the top centre of the view; all dialogs share the look of the
panels; the question about saving a password is modeless, in the top right corner, and
answers "No" by itself after ten seconds. The HTTP authentication dialog names the
origin or proxy that asks, so a background tab cannot pass itself off as the page you
are looking at. - The context menu of the address bar, the command line and the dialog fields has the same
entries, order, words and keys as the text menu of a page. - Starting with a large tree (20,000 tabs) is much faster: the window appears as an empty
shell before the tree is read (1.2 s → 0.56 s to the window), the tree is read in about
half the time, auto loading no longer freezes the window for seconds, and the window no
longer flashes white while it comes up. - MiniMap draws pages that scroll inside an element rather than the document (ChatGPT,
Claude), skips the content the engine hides (closed<details>), and follows elements
that scroll from the bottom. - Edge view: the keyboard goes back to the page after a permission dialog or after
switching from another application; Cancel in a permission dialog denies only that
request instead of bringing up Edge's own prompt; single keys keep working after
switching categories in the settings page. - Opening a link in a new tab from a Qt WebEngine view sends the Referer the page's
referrer policy allows, so links from Google and Wikipedia load instead of failing with
ERR_BLOCKED_BY_CLIENT. - Extensions: the declarativeNetRequest redirect of an extension is limited to its host
permissions, as in Chrome. docs/EXTENSIONS.md lists which extension APIs work on each
engine, by namespace and by method; the table is generated from the compatibility layer
itself and the Edge column was measured on WebView2. - "Open with default browser" passes web addresses and files that are not programs, and
nothing else. A second vanilla hands its command line only to a vanilla of the same
user. Titles written by pages or extensions are shown as plain text in tooltips. - Qt's warnings are written to
qt-warnings.login the data folder. - The Japanese UI was proofread throughout, and key names read as printed on the keyboard
(Home キー, Page Up キー).
Fixes
- Closing a window after expanding or folding directories in the tab list no longer
crashes. - Closing a tab with the trash size 0 and auto save off no longer crashes.
- Starting with extensions registered no longer crashes while the Qt WebEngine view is
restored. - Vimium's J and K no longer jump to the ends of a large tree.
- In the vertical tab bar, a tab created in an expanded directory out of view is drawn at
the level of its siblings. - The tree bar's scroll buttons follow the colour scheme when it is switched at run time.
- Eight view preferences, among them Force dark mode, are applied again when set or reset.
- Right-clicking the address bar keeps the selection, so Copy is offered.
- Directory settings opened from the overview or the menu open the directory you asked
for. - The default of "views kept" is 10 and of "trash entries" 100 instead of showing
"default" for a value of -1; existing settings keep what they hold. - Two Qt warnings that appeared at every start are gone.
- The tab bar no longer touches items that are still animating out after their layer is
gone, which could crash while closing tabs.
Notes
- Windows 10 / 11 x64. Extract the zip and run vanilla.exe; settings and sessions are kept
in data/ beside the executable, so removing the directory removes everything. - If vanilla.exe says VCRUNTIME140.dll is missing, run the bundled vc_redist.x64.exe
once, then start vanilla again. - The Edge WebView2 runtime is not bundled. Windows 11 has it; without it the Qt WebEngine
view is used. - Qt 6.12.0 and Qt WebEngine 6.140.0 (Chromium 140.0.7339.225) are unchanged from 0.3.1.
The bundled Qt WebEngine is the official build, which carries no proprietary codecs:
in that view H.264 and AAC do not play, while VP8, VP9, AV1, Opus and MP3 do.
The Edge view brings its own codecs. - The bundled Qt WebEngine does not carry vanilla's patches either. The patches are in
tools/patches/ for those who build Qt WebEngine themselves (web-accessible-resources,
isolated-world-unsafe-eval, ime-to-active-widget). The Edge view needs none of them. - The executable is not code-signed, so SmartScreen may warn on the first run
("More info" then "Run anyway"). Check the archive against the hash below.
