@rashevskyv rashevskyv released this 03 Nov 09:04

Test build 0.56 of Conker: Live & Reloaded for the Nintendo Switch, Windows, Linux and Android. It is an unofficial fan port. The original Xbox game is recompiled ahead of time to native code, and its GPU commands are translated to Vulkan (Mesa NVK, on the Switch) or OpenGL.

This is a pre-release for testing. The single-player game is playable. Please report what you find (see "Report a bug").

What is new since 0.55

  • Much less CPU on a PC. The game thread no longer spins while it waits for the GPU, and the command executor sleeps when it has nothing to do. Windows, first field, 30 fps before and after: 1.38 -> 0.32 CPU cores (the game thread went from 100% of a core to 23%). Frame rate, game speed and sound are unchanged. CLX_EXEC_SLEEP=0 in the environment restores the old behaviour. The idea comes from cdetv's conker-live-recompiled 0.1.4 (MIT); this is our own implementation. Thank you, cdetv!
  • Clean "Exit game" on the Switch (issue #14): the app no longer crashes the home menu on exit. Checked on a console in a test build before this release.
  • New options in clx_options.txt (and the settings menu): vignette=0 removes the darkened screen edges in the levels; grass_wind=1 (default) makes distant grass sway like the near grass; language=french|german|spanish|italian|japanese switches the menu and subtitle text (the voices stay English; needs a restart). The facts behind these came from reading live-and-recompiled (giacomozama, TGP482, Mabec-games; GPL-3.0): no code was taken, see THIRD_PARTY.md.

Not verified in this build

  • Switch: this exact build has not run on a console or in an emulator yet. The code that changed on the Switch is small (the GPU wait wakes a little sooner; the Switch already slept there), but please treat 0.56 as untested on the console until we say otherwise. 0.55 is the last console-checked build.
  • Android: built by us, not run on a phone. Signed with a test key.
  • Linux: checked with software OpenGL only (the first field renders, sound plays, 25-29 fps on a software renderer).
  • Windows: checked on one PC (Windows 10, NVIDIA): the first field at 30 fps with the CPU numbers above.

  • The download contains no game data: no disc files, no textures, no sound. It does contain code made from the game.
  • You need your own unpacked copy of Conker: Live & Reloaded for the original Xbox. Only the retail NTSC (North America) version works. SHA-1 of its default.xbe: 2232a1b3874d67b4bb4cf53a940420d2dab59535.
  • Switch: a console with Atmosphère and hbmenu, and about 6 GB free on the microSD card. This release has the Vulkan program only.
  • Windows 10/11 x64 or Linux x86-64, with a GPU that has OpenGL 3.3. Linux needs SDL2, OpenSSL and libepoxy.
  • Android: arm64, Android 11 or newer, Vulkan 1.3 with VK_KHR_push_descriptor and VK_EXT_vertex_input_dynamic_state, 8 GB RAM recommended, about 5 GB free.
  • Not connected to Microsoft or Rare.

Install

Nintendo Switch

  1. Unzip into the root of the microSD card. You get sdmc:/switch/clx/ with clx-vulkan.nro, clx_env.txt and clx_options.txt. If you update from an older test build, keep your own clx_options.txt. You can delete the old clx.nro (OpenGL).
  2. Copy your unpacked disc into sdmc:/switch/clx/game/, so that sdmc:/switch/clx/game/default.xbe exists (together with the folders dvddata, media and the other disc files).
  3. Start with title takeover: hold R while you open any game on the Switch's home screen, then pick clx-vulkan.nro in hbmenu. Album (applet) mode does not have enough memory.
  4. First start: let it finish. The game copies its sound banks into a cache and compiles shaders. Expect stutter for a few minutes. If you quit during the copy, the next start can hang on the loading logo: delete sdmc:/switch/clx/save/Cache and start again.

Windows

Unzip anywhere and run clx.bat C:\path\to\your\disc (the folder with default.xbe). The game saves into the disc folder, so use a folder you may write to. Messages go to clx_log.txt.

Linux

tar xzf conker-lr-recomp-linux-v0.56.tar.gz, then ./conker-lr-recomp-linux/clx.sh /path/to/your/disc.

Android (experimental)

  1. Install conker-lr-recomp-android-v0.56.apk (adb install -r, or open it on the phone). It is signed with a test key made locally, not a store key.
  2. Copy your unpacked disc to /sdcard/ConkerLR/game/, so that /sdcard/ConkerLR/game/default.xbe exists.
  3. Open Conker LR, tap Allow all files access and turn it on. Then connect a gamepad and tap Start.
  4. Logs: /sdcard/Download/ConkerLR-logs/<date_time>/ (one folder per start). Attach the newest folder to a bug report.
  5. Optional, Adreno phones: a custom Turnip driver package (AdrenoTools .zip) can be picked in the launcher.

The APK contains code made from the game: share it only as you would the other builds. The first minutes stutter while shaders compile.

On a PC the settings window opens with Esc; on the Switch with −. Gamepad and keyboard can be remapped there. See docs/settings-and-controls.md in the repository.

Known issues

  • Footsteps are quiet or missing in places (the starting area, cutscenes); some ambient sounds are too loud and some effects too quiet.
  • The cube lady's eyes show an odd texture.
  • Multiplayer and Xbox Live do not work. The target is the single-player game.

Report a bug

Open an issue with the version, the platform, where in the game it happened and what you did just before. Switch: attach clx_log_vk.txt, clx_log_vk.prev.txt, clx_options.txt and clx_env.txt from sdmc:/switch/clx/. PC: attach clx_log.txt. Please do not send game files.

Test build 0.55 of Conker: Live & Reloaded for the Nintendo Switch, Windows, Linux and Android. It is an unofficial fan port. The original Xbox game is recompiled ahead of time to native code, and its GPU commands are translated to Vulkan (Mesa NVK, on the Switch) or OpenGL.

What is new since 0.54

  • Lost input on Windows fixed (pull requests #12 and #13 by blackn0x). On some starts the game stopped reading the keyboard and the controller. A timed-out controller request could be cancelled while its completion was still running, and the game's USB polling then stopped for good. The kernel now keeps that completion in order, and the controller reports are safe between threads. Tested by the author: input kept working in 20 of 20 starts. Thank you, blackn0x!
  • No other changes to the game since 0.54.

Fixed in 0.54 and 0.55 together

  • Slingshot: shots fly where you aim (pull request #8 by blackn0x; issues #1, #6).
  • Earth worm crash (issues #2, #4; pull request #7 by blackn0x, since 0.53).
  • Menu objects (bottles, candles, fireplace) render right: more render surfaces (pull request #10 by nydal91).
  • Android port (pull request #10 by nydal91) and rumble support.

Known issues

  • Footsteps are quiet or missing in places (the starting area, cutscenes); some ambient sounds are too loud and some effects too quiet.
  • The cube lady's eyes show an odd texture.
  • Android: built by us, not run on a phone. Signed with a test key.
  • Switch: a test build of this code ran on a console without problems found so far; this exact file differs from it only in the version number.
  • Mouse camera (PC): tested by its author on Windows 11 only.
  • Multiplayer and Xbox Live do not work. The target is the single-player game.
  • 16:9 shows more of the world, but the HUD, menus and movies are stretched. 60 fps and the free camera are experimental.
  • The first minutes of a start can stutter while shaders compile; later starts are smooth.

Report a bug

Open an issue in this repository. Tell us the platform (on the Switch: model, handheld or docked, and the version shown in hbmenu: 0.55.0-vk; on Android: phone model and the newest log folder) and what you were doing. On a PC attach clx_log.txt (and clx_err.txt on Windows) from the program folder. On the Switch attach, from sdmc:/switch/clx/:

  • clx_log_vk.txt, the log of the last run, and clx_log_vk.prev.txt, the run before it. After a freeze or crash, restart the game and send both files: the problem is in the .prev file.
  • clx_options.txt and clx_env.txt.
  • After a crash: the newest .log file in sdmc:/atmosphere/crash_reports/.

Do not attach game files or built programs. The log has no personal data.

@rashevskyv rashevskyv released this 31 Oct 11:30

Test build 0.54 of Conker: Live & Reloaded for the Nintendo Switch, Windows, Linux and Android.

What is new since 0.53

  • Slingshot fixed at its root (issues #1, #6 and part of #4). Pull request #8 by blackn0x. The game checks the length of the aim vector with an x87 compare, and our translator lost the flags of that compare. The game then read an old value, treated every direction as zero length, and shot at yaw 0. The translator now keeps the flags. This changes the generated code, so every build is made again from a new translation.
  • Mouse input is thread-safe (PC). Pull request #9 by blackn0x: mouse motion now goes only through the pad report, with locks between threads, and the unused angle path is removed.
  • Android port code (pull request #10 by nydal91) is now in the source: Android arm64 build scripts, rumble, a pool of 128 surfaces (fixes the rainbow textures), a Linux controller fix, a 21:9 option, a fix for the freeze in the windmill (NaN point in the collision tree), and a build workflow for private copies. The Android APK is in this release. We built it, but we did not run it on a phone (the author of the pull request played earlier builds on a phone). Details are in android/README.md.
  • Switch: the new waiting-lock change from pull request #10 touches every platform. We did not run it on a console.

Thank you blackn0x and nydal91.

v0.53.0 (pre-release): worm crash fix, Switch, Windows and Linux builds

Choose a tag to compare

@rashevskyv rashevskyv released this 30 Oct 20:59

Test build 0.53 of Conker: Live & Reloaded for the Nintendo Switch, Windows and Linux.

What is new since 0.52

  • Earth worm crash fixed (issues #2 and #4). The game searched for the node nearest to the worm's bone transform. That transform held NaN values, so the search found nothing and the game walked out of its array. Two fixes are in this build:
    • PR #7 by blackn0x repairs the search itself, for every place that calls it. Thank you!
    • A second guard (from our side) covers the one call that crashed on the console. It also writes a [node] no nearest child line to the log. With PR #7 it should stay silent, so if you see that line, please tell us.
  • The README has a new section: what to send with a bug report.
  • The Windows and Linux builds now include the earlier pull requests by blackn0x (mouse aim in the weapon camera, mouse options file).

  • Switch: a console with Atmosphère and hbmenu, and about 6 GB free on the microSD card.
  • Windows 10/11 x64 or Linux x86-64, with a GPU that has OpenGL 3.3. Linux needs SDL2, OpenSSL and libepoxy.
  • Not connected to Microsoft or Rare.

On a PC the settings window opens with Esc; on the Switch with −. Gamepad and keyboard can be remapped there. The mouse camera on a PC and all controls are described in docs/settings-and-controls.md in the repository.

Known issues

  • Slingshot: in 0.51 and 0.52 shots could fly the opposite way or sideways (issues #1 and #6). The camera-invert option flipped the slingshot's aim as well; since 0.48 it only changes the player camera. If the slingshot still misbehaves in 0.53, please open an issue with your log (see below).
  • Mouse camera (PC): tested by its author on Windows 11 only.
  • Queen Bee bridge: one player's game crashed or froze there in an older build. Not seen again; please tell us if it happens.
  • Not tested on a console by us: the Switch programs are built from this source and checked to link and package. Please tell us how they run.

Report a bug

Open an issue in this repository. Tell us the platform (on the Switch: model, handheld or docked, and the version shown in hbmenu: 0.53.0-vk or 0.53.0) and what you were doing. On a PC attach clx_log.txt (and clx_err.txt on Windows) from the program folder. On the Switch attach, from sdmc:/switch/clx/:

  • clx_log_vk.txt, the log of the last run (clx_log.txt if you use clx.nro).
  • clx_log_vk.prev.txt, the run before it. After a freeze or crash, restart the game and send both files: the problem is in the .prev file.
  • clx_options.txt and clx_env.txt.
  • After a crash: the newest .log file in sdmc:/atmosphere/crash_reports/.
  • If the save matters: the slot folder sdmc:/switch/clx/game/UDATA/4d530051/<slot>/.

Do not attach game files or built programs. The log has no personal data.

About this repository

The programs are built from the source in this repository at the tag v0.53.0, with your-own-disc scripts as described in the README. Building from your own default.xbe is explained there.

v0.52.0 (pre-release): Switch, Windows and Linux test builds

Choose a tag to compare

@rashevskyv rashevskyv released this 28 Oct 20:47
054f982

Test build 0.52 of Conker: Live & Reloaded for the Nintendo Switch, Windows and Linux.

Read this first

  • The download contains no game data: no disc files, no textures, no sound. It does contain code made from the game.
  • You need your own unpacked copy of Conker: Live & Reloaded for the original Xbox. Only the retail NTSC (North America) version works. SHA-1 of its default.xbe: 2232a1b3874d67b4bb4cf53a940420d2dab59535.
  • Switch: a console with Atmosphère and hbmenu, and about 6 GB free on the microSD card (the unpacked disc is 4.5 GB; the game also makes a cache copy and shader caches).
  • Windows 10/11 x64 or Linux x86-64, with a GPU that has OpenGL 3.3. Linux needs SDL2, OpenSSL and libepoxy.
  • Not connected to Microsoft or Rare.

Install

Nintendo Switch

  1. Unzip into the root of the microSD card. You get sdmc:/switch/clx/ with the two programs, clx_env.txt and clx_options.txt.

Use clx.nro only if the Vulkan one does not work for you. Emulators: clx-vulkan.nro does not run in them; clx.nro boots in Eden but is not supported.

Windows

Unzip anywhere and run clx.bat C:\path\to\your\disc (the folder with default.xbe). The game saves into the disc folder, so use a folder you may write to. Messages go to clx_log.txt. The game starts in borderless fullscreen (fullscreen=window in clx_options.txt turns that off).

Linux

tar xzf conker-lr-recomp-linux-v0.52.tar.gz, then ./conker-lr-recomp-linux/clx.sh /path/to/your/disc.

On a PC the settings window opens with Esc. Gamepad and keyboard can be remapped there.

Controls

The layout follows the Xbox pad by position, so the lower button confirms.

Switch Game
B (lower) / A (right) / Y (left) / X (upper) Xbox A / B / X / Y
Left stick / right stick move / camera
L / R white / black
ZL / ZR left / right trigger
+ Start
− opens the port's settings menu (the game itself never sees it)

In the menu: up/down choose, left/right or A change, B or − close. It has aspect (4:3 or 16:9), frame rate, camera options, invert camera up/down, subtitle box size, FPS counter, button icons, volume, render scale for handheld and docked, anisotropic filter, FXAA, and Exit game (press A twice).

Skipping: during a cutscene or a movie, a first press of + (or Xbox-A, or ZL) shows "SKIP THIS CUTSCENE? PRESS AGAIN"; a second press within 3 seconds skips. This stops accidental skips. Cutscenes the game marks unskippable play to the end.

Defaults: 4:3 picture with side bars, 30 fps (the game's own cap), handheld 150% (960x720), docked 225% (1440x1080), FXAA on, 16x anisotropic. clx_env.txt also sets the Switch to the docked clock rates in handheld mode (CPU 1785 MHz, GPU 768 MHz, memory 1600 MHz) because the game is CPU-bound. This uses more battery and makes more heat. Delete the three NFSU2_*_MHZ lines to use the system clocks.

Save files

Saves are inside the game folder (on the Switch: on the SD card):

sdmc:/switch/clx/game/UDATA/4d530051/<slot>/ (4d530051 is the game's title ID)

  • One folder per Game slot (three slots), named like 10C2167B1950, 10C2167B1951, 10C2167B1952.
  • Each folder holds conker.bin (the save), SaveMeta.xbx and SaveImage.xbx (the slot's name and picture).
  • To send a save: close the game, then zip the whole slot folder (all three files) and send the zip.
  • To load a save you received: start the game once and close it (this creates UDATA/4d530051). Copy the slot folder into sdmc:/switch/clx/game/UDATA/4d530051/. If a folder with the same name is there, back it up first, because it will be replaced. Start the game and choose that Game slot.
  • Do not copy the files TitleMeta.xbx, TitleImage.xbx or SaveImage.xbx that sit directly in 4d530051/. The game makes them.

PC mouse camera and fullscreen

The PC builds can steer the camera with the mouse: the mouse moves the camera through the game's own right-stick input.

Input Action
Mouse camera (only in the game, only for the player camera)
F8 release / capture the mouse
Esc settings window (the mouse is released while it is open)
Alt+Enter, F11 borderless fullscreen on / off

Sensitivity and inversion are in clx_mouse_options.txt next to the program. Restart the game after you change it.

What is new since 0.51

  • PC: mouse camera, borderless fullscreen and a fix for "no button works" on Windows (the window did not get the keyboard focus). This comes from a pull request by blackn0x. Thank you.
  • The Switch programs have the same features as 0.51. The PC code is inert on the Switch.
  • The Windows and Linux builds are updated to the same code as the Switch builds (before, they were v0.1.0).

What was new in 0.51 (Switch)

  • Skip confirmation for cutscenes and movies.
  • A fix for a freeze after several minutes of play. Cause: the game's DirectSound and XACT code read the processor's interrupt level and our runtime never told it, so two locks could wait for each other. Not yet confirmed on a console. If this fix makes things worse, add the line RECOMP_IRQL_MIRROR=0 to sdmc:/switch/clx/clx_env.txt.
  • The camera invert and free-camera options no longer change the slingshot's aim.
  • A report file is written when the game stops responding (see below).

Known issues

  • Mouse camera (PC): tested by its author on Windows 11 only. Not tested by us on a real desktop yet.
  • Queen Bee bridge: one player's game crashed or froze there. Turning FXAA off in the menu got past the bridge, but the game then froze later on the hill with the worms. The cause is probably the freeze fixed above; this build has not been checked on a console yet. Try FXAA off if it stops there.
  • Slingshot: shots flew sideways to the tree although the crosshair was on the target (not fixed, cause not found). Please test it once with Aspect 4:3 and Frame rate 30 in the menu (the frame rate applies after a restart), and tell us whether it changes.
  • Baseball bat: Conker's run with the bat looks strange (probably the 60 fps option; not confirmed).
  • A rare hang: the game can stop responding. The new report file below should show why.

About this repository

The Switch programs are built from the developer's tree at commit 8d83d63 (version 0.52), the PC programs from the same code with the PC launchers. The source in this repository is still the earlier export plus the merged pull request; the source for 0.52 will follow. Building from your own default.xbe is explained in the README.

Install

Switch. Unzip into the root of the microSD card. You get switch/clx/ with clx-vulkan.nro (recommended), clx.nro (OpenGL fallback) and the settings files. Copy your unpacked disc into switch/clx/game/ so that switch/clx/game/default.xbe exists. Start the app with title takeover: hold R while you open any game, then pick it in hbmenu. The first start compiles shaders and can stutter for a few minutes: let it finish.

Windows. Unzip anywhere and run clx.bat C:\path\to\your\disc (the folder with default.xbe). The game saves into the disc folder, so use a folder you may write to. Messages go to clx_log.txt.

Linux. tar xzf conker-lr-recomp-linux-v0.1.0.tar.gz, then ./conker-lr-recomp-linux/clx.sh /path/to/your/disc.

Settings: − on the Switch, Esc on a PC (a gamepad's Back button too). You can remap the gamepad and the keyboard, and exit the game, from that window. More in the README and in docs/settings-and-controls.md.

What was tested

  • Windows: plays on one PC (Windows 10, NVIDIA GPU): keyboard, settings window, window close button.
  • Linux: boots and renders the game (software GL, frame dumps). Not tested on a real GPU.
  • Switch: both apps build from this source. This exact build is not tested on a console yet: that is why this is a pre-release.
  • Sound on PC and a real gamepad on the final build are not tested yet (a Switch Pro Controller was detected in a test build).

Known issues

  • Multiplayer and Xbox Live do not work. The target is the single player game.
  • In 16:9 the HUD, menus and movies are stretched. 60 fps and the free camera are experimental.
  • First start: let it finish. Quitting while it copies the sound banks can hang the next start (the fix is in the README, under Troubleshooting).

Bug reports are welcome: say the platform and the version, and attach the log.
