Hi there 馃憢馃徎

I see that most of reanahub repositories define both setup.py and setup.cfg files to indicate package metadata.

When looking at the setup.cfg ones, it seems all of them still preserve the universal = 1 clause that allow for the binary distribution (wheel) coming out of the build process to be compatible with both Python2 and Python3, as explained here in the packaging docs.

Is there any reason for that clause to be defined nowadays? If not, I am unsure whether it triggers some suboptimal building process, but it would be great to get rid of it to avoid confusion.

I believe all occurrences of this syntax can be found in this list of repositories

Hi! Thanks for the issue.

It's likely a leftover from Python2 support, but indeed looks like it wouldn't be needed anymore.

We can check this in our next r-commons/r-client/r-db release, to verify that everything works as expected. If so we can propagate the change to the other repos.
