@rudlinkon rudlinkon released this 29 Sep 08:34

One login setting instead of two, databases that come back after an unclean reboot, and the fixes the Linux and macOS smoke tests found after 0.8.9.

Every OS: "Start rexenv at login" is now one toggle. At sign-in rexenv opens in the menu bar / notification area / system tray and runs Start all, so your sites come back after a reboot without a click. It never downloads anything or asks for a password at login. Opening rexenv yourself no longer starts the stack, and the separate "Start services when rexenv opens" setting is gone. If you relied on it, turn on "Start rexenv at login". Bedrock sites created from Git now finish setup and serve: the admin-password step and the WordPress manager find WordPress under web/. A re-run of setup on an install that already has sites now ends with "Open your sites" instead of "Create your first site". A build that cannot check for updates at all now says why in the About card instead of "couldn't reach the update server".

macOS and Linux: MySQL and PostgreSQL start again after an unclean shutdown or reboot. Before, a killed server left a lock file whose pid a new process had taken, and every site stayed down until the file was deleted by hand. A start now removes a lock file whose pid is no longer that server, and never touches a running server's lock.

Linux: first-run setup and Settings → Remove system changes each ask for the admin password once. The certificate store's step now shares the prompt with the .rex route.

No database migration since 0.8.9.

The fixes 0.8.8's release night found, and one the Linux smoke test found after it. Linux: the .rex route routed NOTHING in 0.8.8 — systemd-resolved gives no DNS scope to a link whose only address is link-local, so rexenv0 now carries 192.0.2.53/32 and every .rex answer on a Linux host is rexenv's own; and after an in-app deb update the app comes back — the relauncher runs from the new /usr/bin/rexenv rather than the deleted inode the old process was started from (this is the OLD side of a swap, so 0.8.8 → 0.8.9 still opens by hand once; 0.8.9 onward relaunches). Windows: the handle sweep that made a service inherit nothing now runs once at process start — beside a spawn it cleared other threads' fresh child pipes; the update zip's .sha256 names its file. Every OS: the accepted update serial, bytes and signature are kept per document, so a copy that once read another OS's descriptor no longer refuses its own as a replay; and when a descriptor is refused the About card says so instead of 'couldn't reach the update server'.

The first release with Linux — Ubuntu 22.04+ .deb and AppImage for x86_64 and aarch64 (self-update, PHP 7.4, the dummy-link DNS route, both trust stores) — and the first built entirely on GitHub Actions: one tag, every OS, one draft on the tap. Also: the deb depends on pkexec | policykit-1 and declares PostgreSQL's libraries; MySQL and PostgreSQL load on Ubuntu 24.04+/26.04 through rexenv's lib-compat shims; 'CA trusted' on Linux means both stores; a test helper's /bin/kill no longer takes the whole process group with it on Linux.

rexenv now runs on macOS 13 and 14 (macOS 15 stays the standard). The app derives a binary tier from the host each launch: on 13/14 it uses older, measured pins (MySQL 8.4.3, MariaDB 12.0.2, Redis 8.2.1, Apache 2.4.65, cloudflared 2025.4.0, Xdebug 3.4.5) and says which macOS PostgreSQL and PHP 8.0 need; an in-place upgrade to 15 moves every engine to the current pins on the same data. Also: the DNS watchdog re-examines a resolver it had given up on, and never brings back one you removed from Settings; a typed bare name.rex opens in Firefox.

No console windows on Windows: every helper rexenv runs (database clients, WP-CLI, nginx -t, pg_ctl) starts hidden — 0.8.4/0.8.5 left an empty terminal on the desktop that PostgreSQL was attached to. The Windows installer's "rexenv is running" prompt now names the background .rex resolver and says it comes back on its own. Adminer is pinned to 6.1.0.

rexenv 0.8.5

Windows: PostgreSQL starts, and stays started. It never started on a machine with UAC turned off (PostgreSQL's server refuses to run under an administrator token), and once that was fixed the app's own health watchdog raced its startup and reported it dead while it was serving. Both fixed — measured on a clean Windows 11 VM.

Windows: the Database Browser shows Adminer instead of an empty panel. Three things had to be right: the frame's URL (the app was building macOS's), the app's own frame policy, and Adminer's.

Updating asks before it closes the app. After an update installs, rexenv says it is about to close and open again, and waits for you to press OK.

rexenv 0.8.4

Updating no longer closes the app behind your back. After an update installs, rexenv tells you it is about to close and open again — and waits for you to press OK. Dismiss it and the new version simply starts the next time you open rexenv.

Windows: PostgreSQL starts. On a machine with UAC turned off, every process runs with an administrator token and PostgreSQL's server refuses to run under one — so the engine never started, restarted three times and gave up. rexenv now launches it the way PostgreSQL's own tooling does, and shuts it down cleanly.

Windows: the Database Browser shows Adminer instead of an empty panel.

rexenv 0.8.3

A link in an HTML email opens in your browser. It never did: the preview frame was sandboxed in a way that also switched off navigation, so clicking a link in a captured mail did nothing at all — for as long as the Mail screen has existed. Links now open in your preferred browser, the preview itself never navigates, and an email's own scripts still cannot run (the isolation moved into the document, where the browser engine enforces it).

Windows: after an in-app update, Apps & Features shows the new version instead of the old one.

rexenv_0.8.3_x64-setup.exe — Windows 11 x64, per-user, unsigned. rexenv_0.8.3_universal.dmg — macOS 15+.

rexenv 0.8.2

PHP defaults are rexenv's own now, on every version and both platforms: memory_limit 1G, upload_max_filesize 5G, post_max_size 8G, max_input_vars 5000, max_execution_time 60 — written into every pool, with nginx's body limit derived from them. Leave a field empty in Settings → Services → PHP to get these; your own values still win.

Windows: the in-app update works. 0.8.1 could not replace the install directory — it is also the app-data root, and Windows refuses to rename a folder with an open handle under it. The update now moves the program files one by one and never touches your data folder.

rexenv_0.8.2_x64-setup.exe — Windows 11 x64, per-user, unsigned. rexenv_0.8.2_universal.dmg — macOS 15+.

rexenv 0.8.1

Windows: the in-app updater refused an administrator account's own install as "another account's" (Windows stamps files such an account creates with BUILTIN\Administrators as owner). Fixed — this is the only change since 0.8.0. macOS is rebuilt from the same commit with no functional change.

rexenv_0.8.1_x64-setup.exe — Windows 11 x64, per-user, unsigned (see docs/INSTALL.md for what Windows shows). rexenv_0.8.1_universal.dmg — macOS 15+.
