Hi John,

I was able to get your example from the shiny forum running. Very nice! I found a way to test (some of) the regular functions functions in my app from a script which is a start. What is also needed is to test if the site and reactive functions are showing the output I expect.

My app code is here (https://github.com/mostly-harmless/radiant) and I just pushed a state file to the inst/tests/ directory that can be loaded from State in the navbar. This pre-sets inputs for Regression > Correlation, Regression > Linear (OLS), and Conjoint > Conjoint analysis. I would like to capture what output is being created in the Summary and Plots tabs for each tools. What I would like to know is (1) how to navigate to the different pages using (R)Selenium and (2) how to scrape the output shown. For (1) I haven't gotten very far (see below). For (2) I was hoping to save the html but that doesn't seem to provide what is actually shown. Perhaps I would need to pipe the output from shiny.trace ( options(shiny.trace = TRUE) )?

While I would like to run the tests locally I loaded the state file mentioned above to the server version of the app at http://vnijs.rady.ucsd.edu:3838/marketing. For example, in Regression > Correlation you should see the image pasted below. How would you navigate to that page from a script and how would you store the output shown for comparison (e.g., using TestThat)?

Any input you could provide would be great!

Can you give your system details etc. What version of Firefox are you running. What version of the selenium server are you running. The current version is selenium-server-standalone-2.39.0.jar. If you are running firefox 26 this was released on 2013/12/10 . An error "Error: Internal Server Error" is a problem with the selenium server.

It is best to run an older version of firefox with selenium. Selenium runs with other browsers. To run with chrome for example you need to install the chrome web drivers http://chromedriver.storage.googleapis.com/index.html?path=2.8/.

This does run on your system?

I got the chrome web driver. When I double-click it I see the following in a terminal. Perhaps I can connect to that web driver through Rselenium?

Just playing around with the code and the following works to get to Regression > Correlation!

But … more importantly … do you suggest getting the JSON stream from Shiny as output for testing/comparison or is there a way to get what is shown on the page in a format R can read and check even though it is not in the page source code?

I have added the option to use nativeEvents with the selenium webdriver. This is enabled by default on the current build. This should enable the selenium server to interact better with newer browser builds.

Thanks John. I will test this out when I have a working script on FF 25.

I am now trying to get the output from tabs summary_correlation and plots_correlation

The three commands below produce the same result for me. I had hoped to use getElementText but that gives "". getPageSource has the information for the summary_correlation tabs but I would have to parse it from a full page of HTML. Is there a way to get just the Desired chunk I pasted below? Or, even better, everything within the pre tags. From the webElement help in Rselenium it seems that getElementText is what I need correct?

Hi John,

I looked at the output on saucelabs and it looks great! The video seems really useful when things go wrong. I will check this out very soon. Below the script that I ran locally. I was able to navigate to the Plots tabs and get information about the plot and change values in a drop-down based on your examples.

I am not sure if you would consider it but a vignette or set of examples for Rselenium would, I think, be really useful for Shiny users. Seeing examples of how to get and change the values of different inputs as you have shared with me would be part of that. From your examples I think I now understand how to get and set values that involve clicking. I also found out how to set values for numeric and text inputs based on your help file. For example, in the Data > View tab I was able to put in a select command (i.e., "price > 5000").

However, I am using a custom input-binding here that only updates/takes-effect after the user presses enter (the 4th line below). I assume that would also require a sendKeysToElement statement. In the help selKeys is also mentioned but I am not sure how that is used. Could you give me an example? I assume slider values could be set using value? I don't have one in my app but will try it out later.

Again it all ran as expected. The only difference from what I can see is I was running os Mac 10.9. Is this the same as 10.85?

Hi Vincent,

Good to hear the progress you have made. It would be great to produce a vignette as currently the documentation is cryptic at best :). I will look into it in the context of unit testing shiny apps incorporating testthat or something similar.

Saucelabs is very useful. The ability to pick OS/Browser/SeleniumServer edition definitely helps narrow down any problems.

The selKeys is a mapping of convenient characters to the uni-codes outlined here http://code.google.com/p/selenium/wiki/JsonWireProtocol#/session/:sessionId/element/:id/value .

To send a key press simply name an element "key" in the list passed to for example

webElem1$sendKeysToElement(list('Text sent to element', key = 'enter'))

so in your example it would be sufficient to do:

webElem$sendKeysToElement(list("price > 5000", key = "enter"))
