Currently we just throw the user into a reference manual and hope for the best. A tutorial section would be good.

I'd love to handle this. I think we can do a first version when the currently pending syntax changes have gone through and tasks start to more or less work.

How about closing this issue and filing subsequent issues, like e.g. Graydon suggested for issue 1077?

Having issues with non-narrow scope have the disadvantage that it is not clear what the progress is and what needs to be worked on to fix the issue.
