junkie 0.2.1

@github-actions github-actions released this 12 Sep 10:19

A temporary room now tells you it's temporary, instead of implying you mistyped the code.

Reaching for a /f/{code} room from the terminal used to fail three different ways, and every one of them blamed the code you typed:

$ junkie EDCAF7-E63221
error: you're not in EDCAF7-E63221

$ junkie room join EDCAF7-E63221
error: no room joined — is EDCAF7-E63221 the right code?

The code was right. It failed that way for the room's creator too. All three paths now say what is actually going on:

$ junkie EDCAF7-E63221
error: EDCAF7-E63221 is a temporary room, and the terminal can't open one yet —
use it in a browser at /f/EDCAF7-E63221. Following along here is issue #3

Opening temporary rooms from the terminal still isn't supported — that's #3, where what "supported" should mean is still an open question. This release only stops the error from sending you off to re-check a code that was never wrong.

A room you are simply not a member of keeps its own message, and a lookup that fails is not guessed at either way.

Also

  • junkie watch CODE is gone from the documentation. There is no such command — it became the desk's w zoom a while ago, and the docs page had inherited the claim from a stale note rather than from the code.

Note on v0.2.0 — its release notes mentioned this fix, but the change landed one commit after that tag was cut, so it was never in the v0.2.0 binaries. It is in these.

Install

curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/samnodier/junkie/master/install.sh | sh

Puts a junkie binary in ~/.local/bin (set JUNKIE_INSTALL_DIR to choose elsewhere) and verifies it against checksums.txt below. Re-running the same command upgrades in place. Works on macOS and on any Linux distribution, WSL included — the binaries are static, so there is no glibc requirement.

On Windows, download junkie_windows_amd64.zip and put junkie.exe on your PATH.

Signing in no longer asks for your password.

junkie login now shows a short code and waits while you approve it in a browser that is already signed in:

  your code  2HA5-6AM8

  Approve it at https://junkie-blin.onrender.com/cli
  waiting for approval…

The browser does not have to be on the same machine. On a server you reached over SSH, read the code off the screen and approve it on your laptop or your phone — the code is what ties the two together. L inside the desk works the same way.

  • Your password is never typed into the terminal.
  • The pairing code expires in 10 minutes, is single use, and the approval page never approves on its own — the click is the point.
  • junkie logout still ends the session immediately, and so does changing your password.
  • junkie login --password keeps the old flow, for a self-hosted server too old to offer this.

The first release of the junkie terminal client — the focus timer, in your terminal, against the same rooms and the same account as the web app.

  • A live desk. Your rooms and their timers in one pane, your todos in the other. Tab moves between them, j/k scroll the focused one.
  • Rooms and solo. junkie opens the desk, junkie CODE drops straight into a room, junkie watch CODE follows one without joining.
  • Guest mode. Try it without an account; junkie login links it up when you want your rooms.

Everything syncs with the web app and the Android build in real time — the same room, whichever one you have open.

Platforms

macOS (Intel and Apple Silicon), Linux (x86-64 and ARM64, any distribution), and WSL. The binaries are statically linked, so there is no glibc or musl requirement. Windows builds are attached but the install script does not cover them — see below.

Install

curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/samnodier/junkie/master/install.sh | sh

Puts a junkie binary in ~/.local/bin (set JUNKIE_INSTALL_DIR to choose elsewhere) and verifies it against checksums.txt below. Re-running the same command upgrades in place.

On Windows, download junkie_windows_amd64.zip and put junkie.exe on your PATH.

With Go installed you can build from source instead — note this names the binary junkie-cli, because cmd/junkie is the server:

go install github.com/samnodier/junkie/cmd/junkie-cli@latest

junkie for Android

@samnodier samnodier released this 15 Jul 10:17

Install junkie on Android as an app.

Install

  1. Download junkie.apk below.
  2. Open it. If prompted, allow installing from unknown sources.
  3. Launch junkie from your home screen — it runs fullscreen, no browser bar.

This is a thin wrapper (Trusted Web Activity) around the hosted app at
https://junkie-blin.onrender.com, so it always shows the live app — the app
updates itself with every deploy and this download is always current. No
version numbers to track.

iPhone users: open the site in Safari and tap Share → Add to Home Screen.
