ScaleU Intelligence 2.2.0 adds a field note from ScaleU's Q1 FY27 update (July–September 2026): where higher-ed startups are crowding along the student journey, and what the funding, consolidation, and policy climate means for them.
What's new
- Field note: Where higher-ed startups are crowding. The 88 higher-ed and workforce companies ScaleU sourced in the quarter, by stage: 46 build for students taking classes, 29 for graduation and careers, and 13 for the four stages before classes start. Also higher-ed venture funding, the Keypath and Watermark deals, the federal earnings rule, news from ScaleU portfolio companies, and four reports for further reading.
- Higher-ed jobs atlas: pipeline counts beside the Course Experience estimate. Graduate & Beyond is now described as filling with skills and job-search tools while outcome data stays thin.
- Competitive landscape: Risepoint's acquisition of Keypath's North American operations, Main Capital's announced acquisition of Watermark, and crowding in AI grading and tutoring.
- Funding landscape: a higher-ed venture funding figure for July–September 2026.
- Higher-ed landscape: the earnings accountability rule (91 FR 40136), effective July 1, 2027, checked at the Federal Register.

Limits
The pipeline reflects where ScaleU looked in one quarter, not the market. The higher-ed funding figures come from ScaleU's analysis of Harmonic, a paid database, and were not independently checked. Portfolio news was selected by ScaleU. The Watermark sale had not been confirmed closed.
