ExcelMcp 2.5.4
ExcelMcp 2.5.4
Let your AI assistant create and update real Microsoft Excel workbooks: cells,
formulas, Power Query, PivotTables, charts, and VBA. MCP and CLI offer the same
features. Coding agents can use either; the CLI usually uses fewer AI tokens,
though results vary by task, model, and client.
What's New
Fixes and improvements
-
Read the exact transparency of individual column-chart points, including fully opaque and fully transparent fills, without changing neighboring points. Marker transparency limits remain unchanged. (#1165)
-
Correct the text, web, and XML connection type names. Reading or changing a legacy text or web import's refresh settings now uses its worksheet query and retains its source and import settings. (#1165)
Fix moving an existing text or web import to another worksheet. Keep its extraction, formatting and refresh settings, its connection name and description after saving and reopening, and the original source cells. Loading again at the existing A1 refreshes that import without shifting nearby cells. If refreshing a copied import fails, report the original and copied imports and connection so the remaining changes can be inspected before retrying.
-
Fix saving and closing workbooks after Data Model queries. ExcelMcp now avoids a screen-update change that could make Excel mark a saved workbook as changed again. Save failures still leave the session open and report the error. (#1165)
-
VBA runs now reject more than 30 arguments with a clear input error before running the macro. (#1165)
-
Data Model column results now return
"isCalculated": nullwhen Excel cannot say whether a column is calculated, rather than incorrectly claimingfalse. Both the MCP server and command-line tool report this as unknown. (#1165)
Get started
Requires Windows, desktop Excel 2016 or later, and a signed-in interactive
desktop session.
| Where you work | Setup |
|---|---|
| VS Code with GitHub Copilot | Install Excel MCP Server from the VS Code Marketplace. |
| GitHub Copilot plugins | Install excel-mcp, excel-cli, or both from Awesome Copilot. |
| Claude Desktop | Download excel-mcp-2.5.4.mcpb below and double-click to install. |
| Another MCP client | Set up the MCP Server. |
| An agent that runs terminal commands | Set up the CLI. |
Node.js 18 or later with npm and npx is required for the plugins, Claude
Desktop bundle, and npm installations. The VS Code extension and standalone
executables do not need Node.js or .NET. NuGet tools require .NET 10.
The plugins and VS Code extension include optional report-formatting guidance;
no separate skill download is needed. See the
installation guide for setup,
updates, and troubleshooting.

Before updating, finish your work and explicitly save and close workbook
sessions. Restart the MCP Server or CLI service to use the updated version;
installing an update does not replace a running process.
