ExcelMcp 2.6.9
ExcelMcp 2.6.9
Let your AI assistant create and update real Microsoft Excel workbooks: cells,
formulas, Power Query, PivotTables, charts, and VBA. MCP and CLI offer the same
features. Coding agents can use either; the CLI usually uses fewer AI tokens,
though results vary by task, model, and client.
What's New
New features
-
Add an MCP
batchtool to run a list of commands in order using the same input format as CLI batch jobs. It continues after errors by default, supports stopping at the first failure, and returns numbered results. It does not roll back after failure; individual commands can save or discard edits. (#1294)MCP discovery shows the exact batch command and argument names, and file results use
workbook_session_idconsistently. Both entry points stop after timeouts or reported unknown completion, even when continuing after ordinary errors.
Fixes and improvements
-
CLI range and table sorting now preserve column selections and descending order in camelCase JSON options. Existing PascalCase fields remain supported. (#1295) Thanks @Antrakt92!
-
Creating a named range now rejects invalid names without leaving a temporary name, and accepts English formula syntax with non-US regional settings. Equivalent spellings of existing names and unqualified names that resolve to an active-sheet local name are rejected before changing their reference, visibility, or other metadata. Names in different explicit scopes remain distinct. If assigning the formula fails after a new name is created, the error reports that name and its reference when readable, without automatically deleting it. (#1279) Thanks @Antrakt92!
-
Keep numbers that happen to match Excel error codes as numbers in range reads and formula traces. Formulas returning these numbers are also no longer reported as blocked spills; actual cell errors still include their error names and diagnostics. (#1285) Thanks @Antrakt92!
Get started
Requires Windows, desktop Excel 2016 or later, and a signed-in interactive
desktop session.
| Where you work | Setup |
|---|---|
| VS Code with GitHub Copilot | Install Excel MCP Server from the VS Code Marketplace. |
| GitHub Copilot plugins | Install excel-mcp, excel-cli, or both from Awesome Copilot. |
| Claude Desktop | Download excel-mcp-2.6.9.mcpb below and double-click to install. |
| Another MCP client | Set up the MCP Server. |
| An agent that runs terminal commands | Set up the CLI. |
Node.js 18 or later with npm and npx is required for the plugins, Claude
Desktop bundle, and npm installations. The VS Code extension and standalone
executables do not need Node.js or .NET. NuGet tools require .NET 10.
The plugins and VS Code extension do not bundle agent skills. Optional
report-formatting guidance
remains available as documentation. See the
installation guide for setup,
updates, and troubleshooting.

Before updating, finish your work and explicitly save and close workbook
sessions. Restart the MCP Server or CLI service to use the updated version;
installing an update does not replace a running process.
