Dump Restore crash fix update
I recently updated my Pi:
apt update >/dev/null 2>&1 && apt list --upgradable -a
apt full-upgradeSince then, I noticed that restoring my dump backup with the restore command crashed when it attempted to set ext4 extended attributes to the ping utility in /bin/ping.
At the time, dump / restore was my backup solution of choice. While I had a back up file of my root partition I was unable to restore it to my backup SD card - as good as useless as a result!
I used the strace utility to get more insight about the issue and concluded that the restore utility was trying to access libc functions with an incorrect offset and it crashed as a result.
The source code in restore/xattr.c has this comment:
/*
* xattr syscalls do not exist yet in libc, get our own copy here,
* taken from libattr.
*/A small change to this file allowed me to compile restore, resolve the crash and restore my backup.
Note that dump / restore is not actively maintained. I contacted Stelian Pop, the last known maintainer who kindly indicated that he is no longer maintaining the code and a new maintainer has (had?) taken over. I was not able to find further details or signs of maintenance.
Since the change I made is trivial, I'm sharing it here. Should you face this issue, and for convenience only, I've checked in the amended version of restore/xattr.c in this repo, under restore_fix.
