BLACK 0.5.1 — vibration, menu audio and input fixes
BLACK 0.5.1: vibration, menu audio and input fixes
An experimental native macOS update of BLACK for Original Xbox for Apple
Silicon. Bring your own supported USA or European disc image; no game data is
included.
Fixed
- Controller vibration works. Game motor feedback now reaches SDL, and the
game's enable flags follow Controls after profile loads. Intensity and the
off switch apply; changing vibration in the original Options/Pause menu also
updates the port setting. Version 0.5.0 acknowledged requests without driving
the motors. - Speech stops looping in recomp settings. Game audio fades to silence
while the menu pauses gameplay. Closing it clears queued silence and fades
audio back in. - Input returns immediately after the desktop. The window restores its
game/menu responder and relative mouse capture, clearing stale input blocking. - Mouse fire after gamepad switching. A previous menu/controller can no
longer keep the newly selected device's buttons blocked while mouse look works.
The Controls menu, drawn button prompts, Russian text/subtitles and setup from
0.5.0 remain included. No settings or save migration is required.
Install or update
Download BLACK-0.5.1-macos-arm64.dmg, drag BLACK.app to Applications
and replace the old app. Existing Library game data, settings and saves remain
in place. First-time users supply their own supported disc through setup.
Requirements: Apple Silicon and macOS 27 or later. The app is ad-hoc
signed, not notarized. If macOS blocks it, check the source and use
System Settings → Privacy & Security → Open Anyway.
Open recomp settings with F1/F10, Cmd+, or Back + Start
(Share + Options), then choose Controls.
Validation and limits
On Apple M1 Pro / macOS 27.0.1, the user physically confirmed Bluetooth
DualSense vibration/on-off, mouse look and fire after gamepad switching,
immediate input after desktop return, and corrected speech/menu audio behaviour.
One physical Reload-to-Square binding was also checked and restored.
113 CTest checks, GPU readback/colour probes and 43 Python tests passed.
The menu-audio check used real game PCM with a dummy audio device: its pre-mute
mix was nonzero while the accepted output was silent, followed by normal quit.
That automated check does not qualify actual audio; the user's listening test
is separate. The final DMG was checked read-only in English and Russian with
isolated data, system-only PATH and no DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH. Both runs opened
settings and quit normally before their limits; source game files and user
preferences retained their hashes. The matching source archive and checksums
were verified without game or private data.
USB/Bluetooth hotplug remains unverified. Other controllers, analog trigger
rebinding, every control preset/effect, a complete playthrough, all saves/races,
overall audio quality and a clean second Mac remain open. Intel Macs, Linux
and physical Steam Deck are not qualified.

BLACK 0.5.0 — unified controls and device prompts
BLACK 0.5.0: controls, devices and button pictures
An experimental native macOS release of BLACK for Original Xbox for Apple Silicon.
Bring your own supported USA or European disc image. No game data is included.
What's new
- One Controls menu. Device selection and button prompts are the first two rows,
visible without scrolling. Bindings, mouse response and gamepad response have
separate pages; calibration and driver options move under Advanced. Back returns
to the previous row, and each reset affects its named page or binding list. - Saved device selection: Auto, Gamepad or Keyboard and Mouse. Auto follows
deliberate input; mouse motion alone does not take control away from a gamepad.
Switching to keyboard restores relative mouse capture during play or after settings. - Controller button bindings. Reassign or clear 16 logical Xbox button/trigger
controls. The shared editor also retains two keyboard/mouse bindings per action.
Choosing which list to edit does not change the device used for gameplay. - Drawn button prompts. Auto, Xbox, PlayStation or Keyboard, chosen independently
of gameplay input. Face buttons, shoulders, triggers, sticks, keycaps and mouse
buttons use pictures shared with the settings panel. Hints follow saved bindings.
The private font view and host atlas leave source game files intact. - Independent X/Y response. Mouse and gamepad pages group Look and Aiming into
pairs without changing existing values. Select an axis, press Enter to adjust it,
then Enter or Back to finish. - Intro skipping after weapon previews. Menu weapon films no longer disable
the later developer-credits and opening-film skip. - README instructions and game-window settings captures reflect the new menu.
The setup, Russian game text and briefing subtitles from 0.4.x remain included.
Install or update
- Download
BLACK-0.5.0-macos-arm64.dmg. - Drag BLACK.app to Applications, replacing the previous app, then open it.
- Existing Library game data, preferences and saves remain in place. New input
settings default to Auto with the original controller mapping. New installations
start the first-time setup for your own disc.
Open settings with F1/F10, Cmd+, or Back + Start (Share + Options).
Choose Controls. Game menus keep their physical confirm/back buttons even
when gameplay buttons are rebound. Action labels assume BLACK's default game layout.
Requirements: Apple Silicon and macOS 27 or later. The app is ad-hoc signed,
not notarized. If macOS blocks it, check the download source and use
System Settings → Privacy & Security → Open Anyway.
Validation and limits
On Apple M1 Pro / macOS 27.0.1: 110 CTest checks, GPU readback/colour probes
and 43 Python tests passed. The native menu checks cover editor scope,
independent X/Y values, scoped resets, capture/cancel/disconnect and return/focus
navigation. English/Russian layouts were inspected at 960×600 and 640×480.
Muted scripted runs displayed PlayStation prompts, loaded the first mission and
exited normally. The user confirmed physical device/prompt switching before the
final mouse-capture and menu changes. The final DMG app was launched read-only
from its mounted image in English and Russian, with a system-only PATH and no
DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH. Both settings-menu runs quit normally with code 0 before their
limits; private font views were removed and source game files/user preferences
were preserved.
Physical reacceptance of mouse look, controller rebinding, rumble and USB/Bluetooth
hotplug remains open. Scripted input and dummy audio do not qualify hardware or
real audio. Full-game stability, every checkpoint, other game control presets,
a clean second Mac, Intel Macs, Linux and Steam Deck are not qualified.

BLACK 0.4.1 — Russian film subtitles
BLACK 0.4.1 — Russian film subtitles
An experimental native macOS release of BLACK for Original Xbox for Apple Silicon.
Bring your own supported USA or European disc image. No game assets are included.
What's new
- Russian subtitles in the briefing films. With Russian game text, the films before
each mission show Russian subtitles. The nine tracks come with the app and turn on
by themselves; other languages are unchanged. - Wider Cyrillic in the setup. РУССКИЙ and other text the game's fonts cannot
draw now use the same wide faces as the settings panel, not a narrow stand-in.
Everything else is as in 0.4.0:
the first-time setup, Russian game text built into your own copy, and the game's menu
look for the settings panel.
Install or update
- Download
BLACK-0.4.1-macos-arm64.dmg. - Drag BLACK.app to Applications, replacing the old app, then open it.
- A new install starts the first-time setup. An existing installation, settings and
saves are kept; with Russian already chosen the subtitles appear from this launch.
Requirements: Apple Silicon and macOS 27 or later. The app is ad-hoc signed,
not notarized. If macOS blocks it, check the download source and use
System Settings → Privacy & Security → Open Anyway.
Tested
On Apple M1 Pro / macOS 27.0.1: with Russian chosen in setup and films not
skipped, the first mission's briefing film loaded its 35 subtitle cues and showed them
in time with the film, confirmed by eye. The other eight tracks were checked as files
(UTF-8, ordered times), not watched. The packaged app was run from its DMG. 106 CTest
checks and 43 Python checks passed.
Limits are those of 0.4.0: controller navigation in setup and dropping a file were
not tested by hand, Russian was checked in the first mission only, and a complete
playthrough, stable 60 FPS, Intel Macs, Linux and Steam Deck are not qualified.
Validation and limits.

BLACK 0.4.0 — first-time setup, Russian and the game's own look
BLACK 0.4.0 — first-time setup, Russian and the game's own look
An experimental native macOS release of BLACK for Original Xbox for Apple Silicon.
Bring your own supported USA or European disc image. No game assets are included.
What's new
- First-time setup drawn like BLACK's own menu pages: the rails, the heading
typed in with a block cursor, green-grey rows and the selector bar, and the game's
fonts read from your disc as soon as it is checked.- Choose your ISO/XISO or extracted disc folder, or drop it onto the window.
- Before anything is copied you see the release, the game text languages, the size
and the free space on your Mac. - The copy shows progress, speed, time left and the current file. Stop keeps
what was copied; the next install, or the next launch, carries on from there. - Then pick the game text and the settings panel's language, and the graphics:
render scale, anti-aliasing, MetalFX upscaling, texture filtering, field of view,
or Use Recommended. Each choice is saved at once and applies on the first start.
- Russian game text. The app carries only the translation text. Choose Russian
in setup or in Recomp Settings → General: before the game starts, the app builds the
Russian string bank from your own disc's English bank and adds the Cyrillic letters
to your own copy of the game's fonts. Nothing to do by hand, and every other
language keeps its text. Credits names, trademarks and web addresses stay as on
the disc. - Recomp settings in the game's look: the gold palette carried over from TGP's
other ports is replaced by BLACK's own menu colours and rails. Layout and controls
are unchanged. - German, Spanish and Italian game text checked from the menus into the first
mission, with every accented letter in the game's fonts.
Install or update
- Download
BLACK-0.4.0-macos-arm64.dmg. - Drag BLACK.app to Applications, replacing the old app, then open it.
- A new install starts the first-time setup. An existing installation, settings and
saves are kept and the setup does not appear; Russian is offered in Recomp Settings
→ General → Game Language and applies from the next launch.
Requirements: Apple Silicon and macOS 27 or later. The app is ad-hoc signed,
not notarized. If macOS blocks it, check the download source and use
System Settings → Privacy & Security → Open Anyway.
Data lives in ~/Library/Application Support/BLACK/. Choosing Russian adds
MainEn.bin, MainRu.bin and the fonts' retail copies (*.retail.bin) to your
installed game there; your disc image is never changed.
Settings: F1/F10, Cmd+, or Back + Start; Q/E or LB/RB change page.
Fullscreen: Cmd+Return. Quit: Cmd+Q.
Quick start, screenshots and controls.
Tested
On Apple M1 Pro / macOS 27.0.1:
- Setup with the European folder, the European ISO and the USA ISO: each checked,
stopped at a third of the copy with the copied files kept, then resumed through the
setup and verified. Both ISOs were unchanged afterwards. The real app with an empty
data folder went from setup into the game and quit normally; a person installed the
European ISO through the window and played. - Russian through the app on the European folder and the USA ISO: the main menu,
difficulty choice, briefing, mission objectives and pause menu in Russian; switching
back to English restored the English bank without touching the fonts again. - German, Spanish and Italian from the main menu into the first mission and its pause
menu, with the game's own string banks. - The packaged app from its DMG: a new install with English left the game's fonts as
they were; switching to Russian built it on the next start. - 106 CTest checks, 43 Python checks, the settings-menu preview and the setup preview
passed.
Limits: the setup has been used with mouse and keyboard; controller navigation and
dropping a file were not tested by hand. Russian and the other languages were checked
in the first mission only; film subtitles are not included. The 12–16 FPS slowdown
once seen in a later fourth-mission area with HD textures at 2048 did not recur, and
its cause is not established. A complete playthrough, stable 60 FPS, Intel Macs,
Linux and Steam Deck are not qualified.
Validation and limits.

Special thanks to portingpete and
Black-2006-Recomp. Its
launcher is the model for this release's first-time setup and its menu look; its
Xbox-to-pack map drives the HD texture replacement; and its notes on the string banks,
the game fonts and the save profiles, together with its audio completion work and
film timing research, guided much of the work in this port.
Special thanks also to TGP482 / BLACK-XBERecomp
for the BLACK recompilation project, settings/menu design and the European revision
patch; to kagefortysix, RanggaCasper and datfooldive for the cheats of
PR 141 and Black-Android; and to elpetese, sp00nz, the xemu team,
Matt Borgerson / dsp56300, ANGLE, SDL and the other library contributors.
The Russian text is an edited version of an old unofficial fan translation (its
credits name MuZa-Games, voice KranX).

BLACK 0.3.0 — HD textures, languages and more mods
BLACK 0.3.0 — HD textures, languages and more mods
An experimental native macOS release of BLACK for Original Xbox for Apple Silicon.
Bring your own supported USA or European disc image. No game assets are included.
What's new
- HD texture replacement (Recomp Settings → Textures, off by default). Uses your own
copy of the PCSX2 "BLACK HD Reimagined" pack, through portingpete's MIT-licensed map
of Xbox textures to pack files. Put the pack's files, as they are, under
~/Library/Application Support/BLACK/Textures/replacement/. Files load in the
background and a missing one keeps the game's own texture. HD Texture Size
(1024, 2048 or 4096, default 2048) caps the largest side to save memory. The pack is
not included. - Game Language (Recomp Settings → General): English, French, German, Spanish or
Italian game text from your own disc's string banks, from the next launch. The
European disc has all five; the USA disc has English only. - Menu Language for the settings panel: Auto, English, French, German, Spanish,
Italian or Russian. - More mods, ported from TGP482/BLACK-XBERecomp PR 141:
- Infinite Ammo: your magazine and reserve never go down, with any weapon you hold.
- Rapid Fire: 2X, 3X or 4X, at most one shot a frame.
- No Recoil: your shots no longer kick the view up.
- One-Hit Kill: any hit of your bullets kills a soldier.
- Game Speed: 50%, 75%, 150% or 200% of the pace of play; menus and films keep
theirs. - God Mode now also holds the game's own invulnerability flag, so a single huge
hit no longer kills. - Two renames: "Infinite Ammo (Silver Weapons)" is now Silver Weapons, and the
"BFG (M249) Code" is M249 in the First Mission. That is all it does: the
developers' code gives an M249 with 600 rounds in the first mission only, and the
gun has no texture there.
- Fixes: a malformed texture mode no longer aborts the game (a long fourth-mission
session had ended with SIGABRT), and quitting no longer clicks in the speakers.
Install or update
- Download
BLACK-0.3.0-macos-arm64.dmg. - Drag BLACK.app to Applications, replacing the old app, then open it.
- On first launch, choose your own Original Xbox BLACK ISO/XISO or extracted disc
folder. An existing installation, settings and saves are kept.
Your 0.2.0 settings and mods
carry over; the new options start off.
Settings: F1/F10, Cmd+, or Back + Start; Q/E or LB/RB change page.
Fullscreen: Cmd+Return. Quit: Cmd+Q.
Quick start, screenshots and controls.
Tested
On Apple M1 Pro / macOS 27.0.1, mostly in the first mission on Normal:
- Each new mod was checked in play: 90 shots without a reload with Infinite Ammo, a
shot every 3 frames instead of 10 with Rapid Fire 4X, no view kick with No Recoil,
one shot per kill on eight soldiers with One-Hit Kill (played by hand), the
player's own grenade taking no health with God Mode, and Game Speed firing and
walking at half and double pace at a steady 30 FPS. - HD textures in the first mission: 115 replacements, no failed files, 381 MB
resident, 30 FPS. In the fourth mission at render scale 2: 30.0 FPS without HD,
30.0 at 1024 and 29.7 at 2048. - French game text in the front end; the Russian and Spanish settings pages.
- 105 CTest checks, 39 Python checks and the scripted settings-menu check passed.
Limits: input was scripted except where noted, not a physical controller. HD
textures cover only part of each level (50 of 94 unique textures in a second-mission
audit); the rest keep the game's own. A long session with HD at 2048 slowed to
12–16 FPS in a later fourth-mission area; the cause is not established. Only the
front end was checked in other languages. A complete playthrough, stable 60 FPS,
Intel Macs, Linux and Steam Deck are not qualified.
Validation and limits.

BLACK 0.2.0 — Mods and FPS counter
BLACK 0.2.0 — Mods and FPS counter
An experimental native macOS release of BLACK for Original Xbox for Apple Silicon.
Bring your own supported USA or European disc image. No game assets are included.
What's new
-
Mods page. The settings panel gains a fourth page, laid out like TGP's menu:
- Films: Skip Intro Movies and Skip Mission Intros, moved here from Recomp Settings.
- Player: God Mode, Infinite Medkits, Infinite Grenades, Infinite Ammo through
the game's own Silver Weapons reward, and Always Silenced (experimental). - Unlocks: all missions, the Black Ops difficulty, the M16A2 at mission start
and the BFG code.
Every mod is off by default. Infinite Ammo and the M16A2 take effect from the next
mission start or restart. Unlocks are saved into your profile, and turning a mod
off never relocks earned progress. Addresses are kept per XBE revision; an
unrecognised executable shows Mods off and nothing is changed. -
FPS Counter in Recomp Settings → Display: a small corner label showing the
game's own frame rate. BLACK runs near 30 frames per second by design.
Install or update
- Download
BLACK-0.2.0-macos-arm64.dmg. - Drag BLACK.app to Applications, replacing the old app, then open it.
- On first launch, choose your own Original Xbox BLACK ISO/XISO or extracted disc
folder. An existing installation, settings and saves are kept.
Requirements: Apple Silicon and macOS 27 or later. The app is ad-hoc signed,
not notarized. If macOS blocks it, check the download source and use

the new mod keys start off.
Settings: F1/F10, Cmd+, or Back + Start; Q/E or LB/RB change page.
Fullscreen: Cmd+Return. Quit: Cmd+Q.
Quick start, screenshots and controls.
Tested
On Apple M1 Pro / macOS 27.0.1, first mission on Normal with the player mods on:
the game reported the USA revision, health stayed at its 1200 maximum, medkits at
three and grenades at nine, and the HUD showed 999 rounds and the M16A2.
101 CTest checks, 30 Python checks and the scripted settings-menu check passed.
The packaged app, run from its mounted DMG with a system-only PATH, enabled the
DSP56300 JIT, reported the USA revision and quit normally before its time limit.
Limits: input was scripted, not a physical controller. Damage above the maximum
in a single frame can still kill in God Mode. Always Silenced and the BFG were not
exercised in combat. Texture replacement is not available on macOS yet; the PCSX2 HD
texture pack for the PS2 version does not apply to this game. A complete playthrough,
stable 60 FPS, Intel Macs, Linux and Steam Deck are not qualified.
Validation and limits.

BLACK 0.1.0 — macOS / Apple Silicon
BLACK 0.1.0 — macOS / Apple Silicon
The first experimental native macOS release of BLACK for Original Xbox.
Bring your own supported USA or European disc image. No game assets are included.
Install or update
- Download
BLACK-0.1.0-macos-arm64.dmg. - Drag BLACK.app to Applications, then open it.
- Choose your own Original Xbox BLACK ISO/XISO or extracted disc folder.
The app checks the revision and installs a private copy without changing the source.
Requirements: Apple Silicon and macOS 27 or later. This first binary's
bundled libraries require macOS 27; older macOS versions are not supported by this download.
No Homebrew or Python is needed to run the app.
The app is ad-hoc signed, not notarized. If macOS blocks it, check the download
source and use System Settings → Privacy & Security → Open Anyway.
Installed game data, settings and saves live in ~/Library/Application Support/BLACK/.
Replacing the app leaves that data intact. Development-launcher data in out/
is separate and is not automatically migrated.
Included
- Native ARM64 host, NV2A rendering through ANGLE Metal and the DSP audio path.
- A BLACK-styled installer DMG, full-size app icon and Applications integration.
- Native fullscreen and Game Mode opt-in, with activation controlled by macOS.
- Saved render scale/FOV, SMAA/FXAA, anisotropic filtering and MetalFX spatial upscaling.
- TGP-inspired recomp settings with Controller and Mouse and Keyboard pages.
- Independent stick/trigger deadzones, drift measurement, live axes, look/aim X/Y

Settings: F1/F10, Cmd+, or Back + Start. Fullscreen: Cmd+Return.
Quit: Cmd+Q. Quick start and controls.
Compatibility and limits
Tested on Apple M1 Pro / macOS 27.0.1. Combat, game menus and profile saving
have been exercised, but a complete playthrough is not qualified. Remaining
runtime races, long frames, audio quality and physical controller calibration,
rumble/hotplug need broader testing. Gameplay keeps the original fixed step
paced near 30 Hz; stable 60 FPS and unlocked-FPS physics are not promised.
Linux, Steam Deck and Intel Macs are not qualified.
100 CTest checks, 30 Python checks and GPU probes passed. The autonomous app
ran with system-only PATH and bundled dylibs, and the Applications copy exited
normally before its limit. Muted checks do not qualify actual audio.
Detailed validation and limits.
