DontSleepMac 1.0
DontSleepMac 1.0
A one-click menu-bar toggle that keeps your Mac awake. Hold the display on, or let the screen go dark while the work carries on.
This is the first release, and the first time there is a ready-made app to download. Until now you had to build it from source.
What it does
- Stay Awake — Display On keeps the screen on (
caffeinate -d). - Stay Awake — Display Off lets the screen sleep on its normal timer while your Mac keeps working (
caffeinate -i). - Left-click the eye in the menu bar to turn the last-used mode on or off. Right-click for the menu: both modes, Show what's keeping Mac awake…, and Quit.
- The icon shows what your Mac is really doing, checked every 5 seconds, even when another app is the one keeping it awake.
- Click a mode that is on to turn it off. If your Mac stays awake because of another app, it tells you which one instead of doing nothing.
- Show what's keeping Mac awake… lists every process holding your Mac awake. A bare
caffeinateis traced to the process that started it. - In Terminal,
/Applications/DontSleepMac.app/Contents/MacOS/DontSleepMac --diagnoseprints the same report and exits.
What it won't do
- Collect data or make network calls. It runs three of Apple's built-in tools and nothing else:
caffeinate, pmset -g assertionsandps. - Change your power settings. It holds the Mac awake only while a mode is on.
- Outlive the app. Its
caffeinateis tied to the app and exits when the app does.
In this release
- One universal app for Apple silicon and Intel Macs (arm64 and x86_64).
- Runs on macOS 13 or later.
- Ad-hoc signed. Not notarized: there is no Apple Developer ID behind it.
Install
- Download
DontSleepMac-1.0.zipbelow. - Unzip it and move DontSleepMac.app to /Applications.
- Open it. macOS blocks the first launch because the app is not notarized. Go to System Settings → Privacy & Security and click Open Anyway. On macOS 13 and 14, right-click the app → Open also works.
After that, launch it any time with Cmd + Space → "DontSleepMac".
To build it yourself instead, clone the repo and run ./install.sh. It needs Xcode command-line tools.
