over the hill vr v2.0
over the hill vr
Get in, grab the wheel, and go get lost in the mountains. No wheel? An Xbox controller or Quest controllers work too.
This is the full mod, with MelonLoader 0.7.3, the cockpit, mirrors, dashboard, console GPS, automatic rain wipers, and controller bindings included. G29 road rumble is set to 0.90. Optional Woojer Vest game haptics use the Vest USB audio output and leave Quest headphone routing alone. Connect the Vest as a USB audio device to use them; otherwise the feature waits for it. You still need your own Windows Steam copy of Over the Hill. This is PCVR, so your Quest needs to be connected to your PC.
Install
- Close the game. If you already have mods, back up your Mods, MelonLoader, and UserData folders and version.dll first.
- Install SteamVR and the .NET 6 Desktop Runtime, Windows x64: https://dotnet.microsoft.com/en-us/download/dotnet/6.0. For a G29, install Logitech G HUB too.
- In Steam, right-click Over the Hill > Manage > Browse local files. Extract everything from this ZIP right there, beside over the hill.exe. Merge folders and replace files. Don't put it inside another folder.
- In Steam > Properties > Launch Options, add -force-d3d11.
- Connect your headset to your PC, open SteamVR, then launch the game through Steam. The first launch needs internet and can take a few minutes while the loader sets things up. Let it finish.
Zoom all the way in to get into the driver's seat. All 21 cars have their own fitted interior and roof, with different layouts for small 4x4s, trail rigs, work trucks, touring cars, expedition trucks, and vans. Windows, seat position, and controls fit the car. Paint jobs keep the same fitted interior. The center-console GPS shows the local map and your heading. It follows you automatically; no extra buttons needed. When it rains, droplets collect on the windshield and the wipers start automatically.
Gamepad
Xbox button names here. Use the matching buttons on your pad.
- Left stick: steer. RT: gas. LT: brake.
- LB / RB: gear down / up. Check the dash for your gear.
- D-pad right: parking brake. D-pad left: headlights.
- D-pad up / down: change view and zoom. In the cockpit, tap up to toggle the roof; hold up to change interior style.
- X: 4H / 4L. Y: attach winch. A: interact, extend winch, or confirm. B: release winch or go back.
- Left stick click: horn. Menu: pause.
- Click both sticks: recenter. Hold both for a screenshot.
- View + Y: VR on / off. View + B: HUD on / off. Hold View + D-pad up/down to raise/lower your seat; right/left moves it forward/back.
- Map: left stick moves around, LB/RB cycles destinations, D-pad up/down zooms. A confirms; B goes back.
Quest controllers
Turn off your Xbox controller and unplug the wheel first. If either is connected, it keeps control. Wake both Quest controllers before launching.
- Hold either grip, or both, with your hands like you're holding a steering wheel. Turn your hands to steer. Let go to return to center.
- Right trigger: gas. Left trigger: brake. Left stick also steers when you're not gripping.
- Right stick left / right: gear down / up. Let it return to center between shifts.
- Right stick up / down: change view and zoom.
- Click and release the right stick: parking brake. Click both sticks together: recenter.
- X: 4H / 4L. Y: attach winch. A: interact, extend winch, or confirm. B: release winch or go back.
- Left stick: navigate menus. Hold the left stick click for one second to pause. Select Main Menu with the stick and A to leave the drive.
- Map, including the starting location: left stick moves around, right stick left/right cycles destinations, right/left trigger zooms in/out. Let the right stick return to center between choices. A confirms; B goes back.
- Quest has its own lower starting seat position, saved separately from wheel/Xbox. Clicking both sticks recenters your view.
Wheel
UPDATE: The mod broke with the recent official update to the game. This version should fix everything.
Tested with the Logitech G29. Leave G HUB running, set its operating range to 900 degrees, and disable Steam Input for the wheel. Keep keyboard and mouse assignments out of the G HUB desktop and game profiles.
- Wheel: steer. Pedals: gas and brake. Force feedback is included.
- Right paddle: gear up. Left paddle: gear down. The dash shows the selected gear.
- D-pad right: parking brake. Left: headlights. Up / down: view and zoom.
- Cross: interact / confirm. Circle: release winch / back. Square: 4H / 4L. Triangle: attach winch.
- Options: pause. Plus: recenter. Minus: screenshot.
- Red dial: seat up / down. Press the dial: HUD on / off. Hold PS for a second: VR on / off.
Wheel menus:
-
Map, including the starting location: D-pad moves around, L2/R2 cycles destinations, right/left paddle zooms in/out. Cross confirms; Circle goes back.
-
R3 opens the action wheel. L2 / R2 moves between choices. Cross selects; Circle goes back.
-
Music: D-pad up / down or R2 / L2 changes albums. Right skips a track; left restarts / goes back. Cross plays / pauses.
-
Animal camera: look at the animal with your head. The frame follows your view and turns green when the game accepts the shot. Cross takes the photo; Circle exits. Right paddle / D-pad up zooms in; left paddle / D-pad down zooms out.
If something gets weird
F8 toggles VR, F6 recenters, and F11 switches to the cockpit. Page Up / Down moves your seat up / down; Home / End moves it forward / back; Insert / Delete moves it sideways. F12 toggles the HUD.
Launching flat? Check that SteamVR sees your headset and that -force-d3d11 is set, then try F8. Loader won't start? Check .NET 6 x64 and the Microsoft Visual C++ x64 runtime: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/cpp/windows/latest-supported-vc-redist.
The cockpit keeps the horizon level and softens the car's bumps. Your own head movements stay direct. In [OTHCockpitUpdate], set StableCockpitCamera = false to turn that off, or CockpitMotionSmoothingSeconds = 0 to turn off just the bump filtering.
Settings live in UserData/MelonPreferences.cfg. If you already had the mod, change FfbRoad to 0.90 under [OverTheHillVR] to get the new G29 rumble setting. If something breaks, send me MelonLoader/Latest.log and tell me which controller you used.
To uninstall, close the game and restore your backup. On a clean install, removing this ZIP's version.dll stops the loader and mod from loading.
The interiors were checked against all 21 car models in the game engine. Map input and separate seat positions passed engine checks with simulated controller input. Animal camera checks used simulated head turns. A full headset drive in every car and a fresh-PC install haven't been tested yet.
Unofficial fan mod by segadreamcat. Thanks to Funselektor, LavaGang, Valve, and the model creators credited in OTHVR-Docs/CREDITS.txt. Mod version v1.10.
v1.9
Couple updates:
The cockpit view now stays level and softens the bouncing over rough roads. Looking around and leaning still follow your head normally.
You can pick your starting location without leaving VR now.
Map controls:
- Wheel: D-pad moves the map. L2/R2 cycles destinations. Right paddle zooms in; left paddle zooms out. Cross confirms; Circle goes back.
- Xbox: Left stick moves the map. LB/RB cycles destinations. D-pad up/down zooms in/out. A confirms; B goes back.
- Quest: Left stick moves the map. Right stick left/right cycles destinations—let it return to center between choices. Right trigger zooms in; left trigger zooms out. A confirms; B goes back.
