Packrat Backup 0.3.4

@setzor setzor released this 20 Oct 13:00

Packrat Backup 0.3.4

Bug-fix release for the About page version display and a tray quit notification.

Fixed

  • The About page now shows the correct version — it previously displayed a stale version regardless of the installed release; the version is now resolved from the metadata that ships with the installed package itself, so it cannot be confused by other Python environments or older installs on the same machine
  • Quitting completely from the tray menu no longer shows a wrong notification — quitting used to trigger a "Packrat keeps running in the tray. Right-click the tray icon to quit." message on the way out; the app now exits quietly

Packrat Backup 0.3.3

Hot-fix release for a 0.3.2 regression.

Fixed

  • The main window can be resized freely again — the Schedule page options added in 0.3.2 (hourly/custom intervals, battery/metered guards) locked the window's minimum height, leaving a large blank area under the Overview buttons and preventing the window from being made smaller
  • Schedule page is now scrollable — when the window is small, the schedule options scroll instead of forcing the window to grow

Packrat Backup 0.3.2

Scheduling release: more flexible schedule modes, power/network guards, and tray fixes.

Added

  • Hourly and custom schedule intervals — backups can now run every hour, or at a custom interval of every N hours or N days counted from a chosen start time (issue #22)
  • Battery and metered-network guards — optionally defer automatic backups while running on battery or on a metered connection (e.g. mobile data). The backup is delayed, not skipped: it starts automatically once power or an unmetered network returns. Both guards are off by default and configurable on the Schedule page
  • Single-instance guard — launching Packrat while it's already running in the tray now just activates the existing window instead of spawning a second process

Fixed

  • Clicking the tray icon opens the window again — X11 trays send single-click activation, which the tray previously ignored, so right-click → "Open Packrat" was the only way back

Packrat Backup 0.3.1

@setzor setzor released this 11 Oct 19:07

Packrat Backup 0.3.1

Maintenance release with a small feature, a cache fix, and the Flathub app-id rename.

Added

  • Size column in the Restore page — the "Available snapshots" grid now shows how much data each snapshot contains (from restic's summary; older snapshots created with restic < 0.17 show "unknown")

Fixed

  • Snapshot-contents cache never hitting — cache lookups now match both short and full snapshot IDs, so repeat browsing is instant again as intended

Changed

  • Application ID renamed to io.github.setzor.PackratBackup (Flathub preparation)

Packrat Backup 0.3.0

@setzor setzor released this 10 Oct 16:28
10c384c

Feature release: instant snapshot browsing, stop-and-clean-up for running backups, and smarter cloud repository maintenance.

✨ New features

  • Instant snapshot browsing — repeat visits to "Browse Contents" now open instantly via a contents cache instead of re-walking the whole snapshot tree over the cloud backend (#81)
  • Background pre-caching — after each backup finishes, the new snapshot's contents are listed in the background (while restic's cache is still warm), so even the first browse is instant. Configurable in Preferences → Performance ("Pre-cache new snapshot contents in the background after each backup", on by default)
  • Refresh button — re-list a snapshot's contents from the backup destination, ignoring the cache
  • Stop and clean up — stop a running backup; Packrat automatically unlocks the repository and prunes the leftover data from interrupted runs (#63)
  • Scheduled auto-prune — retention is applied after every backup, with pruning on a configurable interval (#64)
  • Faster cloud backups — rclone backend tuning (parallel connections, pack size; configurable in Preferences) and restic v2 repositories (#64)
  • Live progress — the "Estimate Next Backup" button streams progress while estimating, and snapshot listings show a live item count (#80)
  • Debian packaging — DEB packages are now built and validated in CI alongside the RPMs

🐛 Bug fixes

  • Fixed snapshot listings being routed to the wrong browser dialog or cache entry when a background pre-cache listing finished while another snapshot was open
  • Integrity checks that hit a stale lock now offer unlock-and-retry
  • Partial backups (restic exit 3, with a saved snapshot) are no longer reported as failures — unreadable files are listed in a details dialog instead
  • Snapshot timestamps with nanosecond precision no longer break on Python 3.10
  • Cloud backups no longer show disk-speed-based ETAs (which were meaningless on rclone)
  • rclone serve restic no longer fails on an unsupported --dir-cache-time flag
  • Fixed Preferences window minimum size being broken by the Performance box
  • Fixed backup history and retention state after auto-prune runs

📦 Install

# Fedora
sudo dnf install ./packrat-0.3.0-1.fc44.x86_64.rpm

# Debian / Ubuntu
sudo apt install ./packrat_0.3.0-1_all.deb

Packages depend on restic and python3-pyqt6 (recommended: rclone, python3-keyring).

Packrat Backup 0.2.0

Choose a tag to compare

@setzor setzor released this 04 Oct 12:42
09360e8

Packrat Backup 0.2.0 is a feature release, recommended for all users.

New features

  • Change detection — Packrat now watches how much of your data changed in each backup and warns loudly when a run looks like ransomware encryption or an accidental mass edit: a "Change check" tile on the Overview page, a red status badge, and an urgent desktop notification. The sensitivity is configurable in Preferences (#29, stage 1).
  • Per-file and folder restore — restore individual files or folders straight from the snapshot browser instead of restoring everything (#16).
  • Backup preview — see how many files the next backup would upload and how big it would be, before running it (#19).
  • Verified restores — after each backup, Packrat re-reads a sample of the data to prove the backup is restorable, and the History page now shows which snapshots were verified (#28).

Fixes

  • Overview progress bar no longer flickers between spinner and percent during backups (#56)
  • Rclone repository probing no longer attempts init with an invalid location (#43)
  • Weekly catch-up now honours schedules missed for longer than 8 days (#44)
  • Settings lists round-trip entries containing commas correctly (#45)

Packaging

  • First official DEB package alongside the RPM — built and CI-tested on Debian 13
  • Available artifacts: packrat-0.2.0-1.fc44.x86_64.rpm, packrat_0.2.0-1_all.deb, source tarball

Upgrade notes

Existing settings and repositories are fully compatible; no migration steps are needed.

Packrat Backup 0.1.2

Choose a tag to compare

@setzor setzor released this 01 Oct 18:17

Packrat Backup 0.1.2 is a bug-fix and feature release, recommended for all users.

New features

  • Backup history page — a new History page shows every backup, restore, and cleanup run with status and duration.
  • Retention policy — choose how long to keep old backups (days/weeks/months/years) on the Schedule page, with automatic cleanup after each backup.
  • Persistent schedule pause — pausing the schedule from the tray or Schedule page now survives restarts.
  • Faster Restore page — snapshot lists are cached per refresh interval (configurable in Preferences) instead of re-listing every visit.

Bug fixes

  • Fixed the nav stack page order mismatch and a spurious settings save during Preferences load.
  • Fixed the Clean Up button not resetting after cleanup finished.
  • Safety: an all-zero retention policy can no longer run restic forget --prune with no keep constraints (which would delete every snapshot); it now falls back to keeping one month.
  • A failed restic process launch (e.g. the binary disappeared mid-session) no longer leaves the UI stuck on "Backup running…".

Known issues

  • The rclone cloud backend always attempts repository init on backup, which fails against an already-initialized remote (#43).
  • Missed-backup catch-up only looks back 8 days for weekly schedules (#44).
  • Settings list values containing commas do not round-trip (#45).

Packrat Backup 0.1.1

Choose a tag to compare

@setzor setzor released this 29 Sep 04:12
7b41f57

Bug-fix release.

Fixed

  • Restore page Refresh crash when a restic operation is already running (PR #8)
  • Unhandled restic errors during first-run wizard repository init (PR #9)
  • Tray icon now shows the Pakkie mascot instead of a blue square (PR #10)

Added

  • Explicit window icon from the mascot SVG (PR #6)

Packaging

  • RPM now targets x86_64 Fedora 44, requires the correct python3-pyqt6 package,
    includes Packager/Group metadata, and uses the modern pyproject macros so it
    installs correctly in KDE Discover (PR #7)
