What's new
New ways to install Quill
- Mac: a disk image. Open
quill-macos-aarch64.dmgand drag Quill onto the Applications folder. Apple signed and notarized both the disk image and the app. - Mac with Homebrew:
brew install --cask shinycake/tap/quill-app - Windows: an installer.
quill-windows-x86_64-setup.exeinstalls Quill for your account with no administrator rights, adds it to the Start menu and lists it in Settings › Apps. It isn't code-signed yet, so SmartScreen asks once: choose More info, then Run anyway. - Windows with Chocolatey:
choco install quill, once Chocolatey's moderators approve the package - Linux with Flatpak:
flatpak install --user https://shinycake.github.io/quill/flatpak/quill.flatpakref - The zips, the Linux packages and the one-line install commands work as before.
Linux: Flatpak
- Quill can run as a Flatpak. Inside the sandbox it names its windows, notifications and launcher badge after the Flatpak, so your desktop groups them with the Quill icon. Settings it can't change from the sandbox, like start at login and the
tg:link handler, show a note instead. - Quill has its own signed Flatpak repository, which updates with your other Flatpak apps.
Not yet tested on real hardware
- The Windows installer was installed, run and uninstalled in CI, never on a real PC
- The Flatpak was built and started in CI, never on a real Linux desktop

Installing
macOS (Apple Silicon, macOS 14+). Download quill-macos-aarch64.dmg, open
it and drag Quill to Applications. Quill is signed with a Developer ID and
notarized by Apple, so it opens without a warning. With Homebrew:
brew install --cask shinycake/tap/quill-appOr paste this into Terminal to install or update Quill in Applications:
curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/shinycake/quill/main/scripts/macos-install.sh | bashWindows (x86_64, Windows 10+). Download and run
quill-windows-x86_64-setup.exe. It installs Quill for your user, with no
administrator rights, adds a Start menu shortcut and lists Quill in
Settings > Apps. The installer is not code-signed yet, so SmartScreen may warn
the first time: choose More info > Run anyway. With Chocolatey:
choco install quillOr paste this into PowerShell, which installs the same way without the
SmartScreen prompt:
irm https://raw.githubusercontent.com/shinycake/quill/main/scripts/windows-install.ps1 | iexquill-windows-x86_64.zip is the same app unpacked: unzip it anywhere and run
quill.exe. No Visual C++ Redistributable is needed.
Linux (x86_64 or arm64, glibc). Paste this into a terminal to install or
update Quill for your user, with no root needed:
curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/shinycake/quill/main/scripts/linux-web-install.sh | bashIt picks the package for your CPU (quill-linux-x86_64-bundle.tar.gz or
quill-linux-aarch64-bundle.tar.gz), checks its SHA-256, installs it under
~/.local with a desktop entry, and names any system library that is missing.
To do it by hand, unpack the tarball with tar -xzf, then run
quill-linux-<arch>/quill in place or quill-linux-<arch>/install.sh (pass a
prefix to install elsewhere). Quill can update this package in place from
Settings.
Telegram API credentials
This build includes Quill's own Telegram API credentials, so it connects without any setup. TELEGRAM_API_ID / TELEGRAM_API_HASH in the environment (or a quill.local.env file) still take precedence.
Source code and licenses
Quill is MIT-licensed; the source is this tag. Each package lists its
third-party components in THIRD_PARTY.md. The LGPL libraries it ships (FFmpeg
and the tgcalls inside libquill_calls) are attached as quill-source-*
archives; LGPL-SOURCES.txt has the exact upstream URLs and commits and a
written offer for the corresponding source.

Quill 2026.1103.4940
What's new
Mac users: download this version from the site once
Quill for Mac is now signed with a Developer ID and notarized by Apple, so macOS opens it without warnings. Your current copy can't install this update by itself, because it was signed the old way. Download Quill from the site once and replace the app. Your accounts and settings stay. Updates work as usual after that.
Smoother on a Mac
- Mac windows now draw on Apple's Metal display link, which times each frame to the display.
- In Low Power Mode on a Mac or battery saver on Windows, Quill draws at most 30 frames a second. To keep full speed, turn off "Save Power on Low Battery" in Settings › Battery and Animations.
- The text cursor stops blinking after 10 seconds without typing, so an idle window draws nothing.
- Quill now uses GPUI Kit 0.9, and the built-in menus, pickers and dialogs follow your Quill language.
Chats
- Polls have a new look, and every option lines up on the same side as the first one. Hebrew in polls wraps between words.
- Chat wallpapers the other person sets now show in your chat too.
- Clicking a notification opens the chat with the cursor in the message box.
- The story list loads all the stories, not just the first page.
- In a secret chat, the message menu offers only what secret chats allow.
- "Highlight words with emoji" is now off by default. When it's on, the first word of a draft lights up once you type a space after it.
Settings
- Picking a search result scrolls to that setting, centers it and highlights it.
Not yet tested on real hardware
These passed automated tests, but we haven't run them on the real thing:
- The Metal display link with real video, HDR pictures, live resizing, moving a window between displays and Low Power Mode
- The first notarized Mac build, installed from the site

quill-linux-x86_64 and quill-linux-aarch64 are the bare executables the in-app
updater installs into an existing Linux package. latest.json is a machine-readable summary of this release.
Installing
macOS (Apple Silicon, macOS 14+). Paste this into Terminal to install or
update Quill in Applications:
curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/shinycake/quill/main/scripts/macos-install.sh | bashIt downloads quill-macos-aarch64.zip, checks its SHA-256 and signature, and
installs Quill.app. Quill opens straight away, with no security warning.
If you download the zip in a browser instead, macOS blocks the first launch,
because Quill is not notarized (it has no paid Apple Developer ID; it is only
ad-hoc signed). Move Quill.app to Applications and run
xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Quill.app in Terminal, or open
Quill once, then go to System Settings > Privacy & Security, click
Open Anyway next to the Quill message, and confirm.

To do it by hand, unpack the tarball with tar -xzf, then run
quill-linux-<arch>/quill in place or quill-linux-<arch>/install.sh (pass a
prefix to install elsewhere). Quill can update this package in place from
Settings.
Windows (x86_64, Windows 10+). Paste this into PowerShell to install or
update Quill for your user, with no administrator rights needed:
irm https://raw.githubusercontent.com/shinycake/quill/main/scripts/windows-install.ps1 | iexIt downloads quill-windows-x86_64.zip, checks its SHA-256, installs it in
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\Quill with a Start menu shortcut, and adds Quill to
Settings > Apps so you can remove it there. Quill starts without a SmartScreen
warning (Smart App Control, when turned on, is a separate check and may still
block it). If you download the zip in a browser instead, unzip it anywhere and
run quill.exe. The zip is not code-signed, so SmartScreen warns the first
time: choose More info > Run anyway. No Visual C++ Redistributable is
needed.
Telegram API credentials
This build includes Quill's own Telegram API credentials, so it connects without any setup. TELEGRAM_API_ID / TELEGRAM_API_HASH in the environment (or a quill.local.env file) still take precedence.

Quill 2026.1102.4879
What's new
This release finishes a full sweep of Quill for performance, stability and memory.
Sending photos and files
- HEIC, HEIF, AVIF, JPEG XL, BMP and TIFF pictures now offer the compressed photo option when you drop or attach them, and WebM offers video. Quill converts them to JPEG for sending. On a system that cannot decode a format, the file goes out as a file.
- You can drop, paste or pick more than 10 files. They go out in groups of ten.
- A dragged GIF gets the same drop zones as other media and stays a GIF.
- A photo edit now finishes in the background. Send waits for it, so the original never goes out by mistake.
Disk space and the cache
- Quill now keeps its cache to 1 GB and clears files nobody opened for 31 days, the limits Telegram Desktop starts with. This is set once per account, only on accounts that never chose limits. If you pick "No limit" in Settings › Data and Storage, it stays that way.
- The cleanup also covers files in the Downloads list. A downloaded file you have not opened for 31 days, or the oldest ones once the cache passes 1 GB, leave the list and download again when you open them. Files you saved with Save or Save as are copies outside the cache and are never removed.
- The low disk warning now shows in every Quill window: chat windows, calls and voice chats too. It stays until enough space is free.
- Downloads that Quill paused because the disk was low now resume by themselves once space is free, also after Quill restarts or reconnects.
- Freeing space during a call no longer ends the call.
- While a call keeps Quill connected on a full disk, downloads and an update download pause instead of filling the disk.
- Quill warns before a low disk would stop it from opening your account, even with a large message database or several accounts.
- A data folder on a drive that was unplugged now counts as unwritable, so Quill disconnects safely instead of reading the internal disk.
- The full disk notification no longer offers Reply and Mark as read.
- "Show cached files" on the full disk screen says so when the folder cannot open.
Stability
- On Windows, Quill no longer crashes, freezes or quits silently when GPU setup fails or the GPU is lost, and it no longer leaves blank windows when recovery gives up.
- On Linux, lost GPUs, Wayland input, D-Bus and the tray no longer cause crashes or hangs.
- On a Mac, Quill survives a failed Metal setup. Closing the window no longer leaves a dead app, and notifications arrive while the window is hidden.
- Quitting during a call now hangs up. A Dock Quit or a log out asks before ending a running export.
- Malformed animated stickers are refused before they reach the renderer.
- Text with hundreds of stacked marks no longer slows down the chat or draws over nearby lines.
- If an account cannot open, Quill says why. It reconnects right after a network change, and says when a running copy of Quill is frozen.
Fewer freezes
- A long multi-line paste no longer freezes Quill on every keystroke.
- Settings saves, photo edits, drag hovers, opening call devices and starting audio no longer hold up the window.
- The window keeps drawing and answering input through a flood of updates, including on big accounts.
- Videos keep playing after their sound ends, and a clip that shows no picture now ends or fails.
Lighter on the machine
- Chats draw with less work during scrolling and while stickers play, and Quill redraws only what animates.
- A GIF file in a chat no longer holds hundreds of megabytes to show one picture.
- An open chat no longer grows without limit in memory.
- Converting video is about 4 times faster on Linux.
Also fixed
- Date pickers accept a time in the repeated hour on the night clocks go back.
- Stickers with no thumbnail show their first frame in the panel.
- A song you return to resumes where you stopped, instead of slightly ahead.
Changed behavior
- On a Mac, closing hides only the main window, and a Dock click brings it back.
Not yet tested on real hardware
These fixes passed automated tests, but we have not run them on the real thing:
- 120 Hz and HDR displays, and GPU loss on Windows and Linux
- Calls between two real devices
- A real IPv6 router change
- A really full disk with a live connection
- Sending a real HEIC, and decoding HEIC on Windows and Linux

Quill 2026.1031.4046
What's new
Chats in their own windows
- A sticker chat in its own window no longer leaks while the main window is minimized or closed. Memory grew about 25 MB a second, past 1.3 GB in under a minute. It now stays level.
- A round video or GIF in a chat window now plays while the main window is visible. It used to stay stuck on its grey placeholder while Quill reopened the player 57 times a second. On a Mac, CPU drops from 95% to 16%.
- A clip keeps playing when you switch to another Quill window. Before, it froze or dropped to a stutter. It also wakes with its last picture, without a green flash.
- Stickers in a chat window no longer reload or replay from the start each time the main window switches chats.
- A main window fully covered by its own chat window stops animating and gives back about 14 MB of screen buffers. On a 120 Hz Mac it was drawing about 100 frames a second that nobody could see.
Less CPU for voice notes and music
- Audio at normal speed no longer runs the speed stretcher's search. That search cost about a quarter of a core on a Mac for any voice note, audio file or, on Linux and Windows, video soundtrack, and it always landed on the same answer.
- Opus voice notes take about 55 times less CPU to decode.
Also fixed
- Animated emoji in the chat list keep their place when you switch chats. They used to restart from the first frame, and now and then flashed a star or a plain emoji.
- A highlighted word's emoji bar stays open on the way to it. It used to swap or close as soon as the pointer crossed another word.
- Sticker suggestions can be closed, with Esc or a new close button, and come back when the text changes.
What's Changed
Other changes
- Keep a word's emoji bar open on the way to it, and let sticker suggestions be closed in #1260

quill-linux-x86_64 and quill-linux-aarch64 are the bare executables the in-app
updater installs into an existing Linux package. latest.json is a machine-readable summary of this release.
Installing
macOS (Apple Silicon, macOS 14+).
Quill can update this package in place from

What's new
Quill stays light through a long session
The last release fixed the big leak in animated stickers. This one goes after what built up slowly over hours of use: message text, pictures in other windows, stickers and emoji nobody was looking at any more, and windows that kept drawing when nothing on them changed.
- Message text takes far less memory. Each laid-out line carried room for 32 styles where it almost always uses one, and Quill kept each message laid out at up to four widths, two of which nothing ever draws. It now keeps only the widths a message can be drawn at, within 64 MB in all, where a long scroll through a channel of long posts used to hold well over 100 MB. Scrolling back stays as smooth as before.
- Animated stickers and emoji close 5 seconds after the last window stops showing them, with their frames. Before, closing the emoji panel over a chat of plain text kept every clip from it open, up to 96 MB, until a sticker played again.
- A chat opened in its own window keeps its pictures within a budget, like the main window. Before, every picture it showed stayed in memory until Quill quit.
- Avatars and custom emoji go into small GPU textures of their own, so one left on screen no longer keeps a 4 MB texture alive.
- Ads, poll results and profile details of chats Quill has let go of are released with them.
- A closed video gives back what macOS kept for it. 200 videos opened and closed used to leave 995 video clocks behind.
- On a Mac, a window that keeps a small animation going hands back its spare screen buffer, about 20 MB, as an idle window already did. And more windows now go idle: a paused voice note or song redrew 4 times a second, a message effect you hadn't seen yet redrew 120 times a second behind other apps, and a field focused in a window in the background blinked its hidden caret.
Less CPU, and a Mac that can sleep
- Quill closes the speakers half a second after the last sound. Before, one notification sound kept the speakers open, and macOS awake, for as long as Quill ran. Muted clips no longer hold the speakers either.
- Opening the speakers takes up to 75 ms on a Mac. Quill now does it on a thread of its own instead of the one that draws the window, so the first sound, and every voice note, video or call sound after a quiet spell, starts without stalling the window.
- On a 120 Hz Mac, a clip and animated emoji in the same chat each drew on their own schedule, so the window drew about twice as often as either needed. They now share one 60 Hz tick: 52 frames a second down to 33, and 12.7% CPU down to 9.6%, for a clip beside three emoji.
- Once any app had read the window's layout (window managers like Tiles do it on a click), Quill redrew the whole window on every frame until it quit, about 18% CPU with nothing happening. It now redraws only what changed, as before.
- With the history scrolled up, a clip passing the bottom of the chat redrew the whole chat 30 times a second. CPU 16% down to 11.5%.
Also fixed
- Clicking the jump-to-latest button, the date pill or the corner buttons over a video or photo also opened the media viewer on it.

Quill 2026.1030.3995
What's new
Quill gives memory back
After 40 minutes of ordinary use, Quill 2026.1029 could sit at 500 MB or more on a Mac. Most of that came from one leak in animated stickers. The rest was pictures and glyphs that stayed in memory after nothing showed them any more.
- When an animated sticker's next frame wasn't ready in time, Quill showed an earlier one and then never let it go, in memory or on the GPU. On a 120 Hz Mac, a chat full of stickers could add about 20 MB a second, and leaving the chat gave none of it back. Frames now go as soon as they stop showing, and stickers animate as before.
- Rounded video tiles used a corner mask the size of the whole tile, and each new tile or window size made another. They now share four small corner masks.
- Pictures Quill makes itself, like a rotated photo, an edited photo's preview, a video cover or a sign-in QR code, leave the GPU when they're replaced or closed.
- After a moment of idle, Quill lets go of wallpaper pictures for window sizes you've left, emoji the screen no longer shows, and pictures from sticker packs opened in a dialog. One trip through the emoji panel used to keep about 16 MB on the GPU until you quit.
- While Quill is in the background, photos of chats you've left are released. While it's in front, the photos it keeps for scrolling back give up their GPU copy at idle and keep their decoded picture, so they still show at once when you scroll back.
- Replied-to messages, pinned lists and message translations are released once a chat's history is dropped, and a rotated photo goes when the viewer closes.
Measured on an M1 Pro Mac with Quill's demo data, 2026-10-29 and 30:
- A chat of animated stickers and the GIF and sticker tabs grew Quill by more than 1 GB in a minute. With this release, the same run leaves it within a few MB of where it started.
- Browsing photos, stickers, the emoji panel and several chats, then idling for 90 seconds, left Quill about 50 MB above a fresh launch with only the sticker fix. With the rest of this release it's about 23 MB.
Also fixed
- In calls on stereo speakers, or on headsets that don't run at 48 kHz, the other person sounded sped up and high-pitched, and heard their own voice echo back. Both are fixed on macOS, Linux and Windows.
- Emoji suggestions:
- Every word that matches an emoji lights up as soon as you finish typing it.
- Right-click a word to get suggestions for it, to stop suggesting emoji for that word, or to turn suggestions off. Settings › Chats › Emoji lists the words you've turned off.
:wordand a word you point at share one bar, as wide as the message box, and it opens into a grid.- With Premium, your custom emoji follow the standard ones.
- On Windows, one closed connection could stall every later one, which hung Agent access and launch requests. That no longer happens.
What's Changed
Other changes

- Emoji suggestions: every matching word, a full-width bar, custom emoji by @shinycake in #1232
- Stop leaking sticker frames a late view showed by @shinycake in #1233
- Round video tiles with small corner masks, not a mask per tile by @shinycake in #1234
- Retire pictures Quill keeps in its own state when they are replaced by @shinycake in #1235
- Drop wallpaper pictures and emoji glyphs no longer shown once Quill is idle by @shinycake in #1236
- Play call sound at its real speed on stereo and non-48 kHz speakers by @shinycake in #1238
- Let go of pictures and chat side tables left behind after use by @shinycake in #1237
- Free the atlas textures of pictures kept off screen, and forget dropped chats' translations by @shinycake in #1239

Quill 2026.1029.3985
What's new
Calls run on Telegram's own engine
- Voice and video calls, group calls, screen sharing and live streams now run on tgcalls, the call library Telegram Desktop uses, on macOS, Linux and Windows. It replaces ntgcalls. Please report any call that misbehaves.
- Conference calls. Telegram's end-to-end encrypted group calls now work. The encryption emoji show under the call's title, and the Add People box searches your contacts.
- Calls show the other person's low battery and the connection's signal bars, as Telegram Desktop does.
- In group calls, everyone's speaking level drives their row, and Quill tells you when you talk while muted.
Emoji suggestions
- Typing
:and a word suggests emoji from Telegram's emoji keywords, so:happyfinds 😊. Recently used emoji come first. - Words in the message box that have an emoji, like "pizza" or "cake", get a soft highlight. Point at one to swap it for its emoji. Turn it off in Settings > Chat > Emoji ("Highlight words with emoji"). Lookups stay on your device.
- Sticker suggestions go away after you send the emoji they were for.
Also new
- macOS shortcuts work as they should again: Cmd+H hides Quill, Cmd+Opt+H hides other apps, and the Ctrl text keys (Ctrl+K, Ctrl+F and the rest) edit text instead of triggering Quill commands. The app menu has Services and Show All, and shows Settings (Cmd+,) from launch.
- On Linux and Windows, Quill no longer binds Super-key chords that belong to the desktop.
- Reordering pinned chats is easier to follow: the row lifts off as a card and a dashed outline marks where it will land.
- Updated GPUI Kit (0.8.1), GPUI (0.3.10) and other dependencies.

quill-linux-x86_64 and quill-linux-aarch64 are the bare executables the in-app
updater installs into an existing Linux package. latest.json is a machine-readable summary of this release.
Installing
macOS (Apple Silicon, macOS 14+).
Quill can update this package in place from

Quill 2026.1028.3950
What's new
Smoother emoji effects
- The effect that plays when you tap an animated emoji like 👏 or 😂 no longer stutters. When an effect is too heavy to draw at 120 fps, it now plays at its own 60 fps, and every frame stays on screen for the same length of time.
Also new
- Chats open at the first unread message, with the unread bar at the top, and messages count as read only once they're on screen.
- The update button now sits in the title bar as one compact pill.
- Agent access: window control no longer refuses to start when no screen reader is running, and a message an agent sends from the message box clears the draft.
What's Changed
Other changes
- Move the update button into the title bar as a fixed-size progress pill by @shinycake in #1204
- Hold the window driver only for a real screen reader by @shinycake in #1203
- fix(history): mark messages read only once they are on screen by @shinycake in #1205
- feat(history): open chats with the unread bar at the top, like tdesktop by @shinycake in #1206
- Keep the emoji tap effect smooth by @shinycake in #1207

Quill 2026.1028.3936
What's new
Animated emoji
- An emoji sent on its own now turns into a large animated sticker, as on other Telegram apps. It plays when you send it and when it scrolls into view, and it keeps your skin tone.
- Tap it to play it again along with its full-screen effect. When you read an emoji someone sent you in a private chat, its effect plays on its own, and they aren't told you tapped it.
- Messages of two or three custom emoji show larger too.
Smoother, sharper stickers
- Animated stickers are drawn by a new renderer, ThorVG, at your screen's full resolution. The soft edges and light halo are gone.
- Stickers play at up to 120 fps on high-refresh displays, and stay at the sticker's own rate on 60 Hz screens or when power saving is on.
- The sticker panel uses less memory.
Also new
- One click on a voice note, song, GIF or video starts the download and plays it when it's ready. A second click cancels.
- Music and voice rows in Shared Media play in place instead of jumping to the message.
- The media viewer has a Reply button.
- Link underlines in wrapped text now stay under the words.
- Downloads that Telegram started by itself can be cancelled.
- Fixed a macOS bug where a window brought back from a notification could stop redrawing.
- Agent access: one switch in Settings > Advanced turns it on or off, and there's a copyable setup prompt for agents.
What's Changed
Other changes
- Underline wrapped links only under their own glyphs by @shinycake in #1192
- Media viewer: Reply button by @shinycake in #1193
- Render animated stickers with ThorVG by @shinycake in #1194
- Agent access: one switch that hides it all, plus a setup prompt by @shinycake in #1195
- fix(media): one press downloads and plays; a second press cancels by @shinycake in #1196
- fix(shared-media): music and voice rows play in place by @shinycake in #1198
- Fix frozen window after clicking a notification on macOS by @shinycake in #1199
- Stream animated stickers at screen resolution by @shinycake in #1197
- fix(downloads): cancel a transfer TDLib started on its own by @shinycake in #1200
- Show lone emoji as animated stickers by @shinycake in #1201
- Play the emoji effect when an incoming emoji is read by @shinycake in #1202

What's new
Agent access
AI agents on your computer, such as Claude Code, Claude Desktop or Cursor, can now use your Telegram account through the Quill you already have running. It's off until you turn it on in Settings > Agent access.
- Agents start with Saved Messages and bots. They have to ask for any other chat, and you allow it in Quill. Your contacts stay hidden until you share them.
- The Agent access page says in plain words what agents can do right now. Every tool is listed as available, asks first or off, with the reason. Account changes, money and Stars, and changes beyond one chat always wait for your click. Agents can never sign you out or delete your account.
- Activity shows what each agent did, with a link to the message and Undo for its sends. Revoke disconnects one agent, and turning off Allow agents keeps them all out.
- If you let them, agents can click and type in Quill's window, only in the chats they're allowed. A glow sweeps around the window while one is driving, and pressing a key or moving the mouse hands control back to you.
- Each app gets one line to copy to connect it. Agents that don't use MCP can use the
quill agentcommand line, and Claude Code can install a ready-made Quill skill.
Telegram Premium
- AI compose, with your own writing styles.
- Video profile pictures play beside messages and in the chat list.
- Stealth Mode for stories.

quill-linux-x86_64 and quill-linux-aarch64 are the bare executables the in-app
updater installs into an existing Linux package. latest.json is a machine-readable summary of this release.
Installing
macOS (Apple Silicon, macOS 14+).
Quill can update this package in place from
