Seeking help with the /search feature

Hi,

I'am using Grafana 7.1 and the current version of your plugin.
I am trying to use the search endpoint /search with only half success.
I implemented an http service and I receive requests for variables (Dashboard settings-> Variables -> select type query).
I do not receive any request on /search when configuring the dashboard queries. I can manually type the query as in the screenshot.

In the predecessor variant of this plugin (simple-json-datasource) I was able to use a dropdown menu and select from a provided list of possible queries.
Am I doing something wrong?
