OKTONIK 0.2.0

Harmonic performance instrument · by Skerry Vibe

Back up your Move projects before updating. Tested with Schwung 1.7.3.

New

Built-in sequencer. Record chords, bass and melody into clips that play in
sync with Move, and edit them on the step buttons.

  • Eight clips each for chords, bass and melody, with their own length and rate
  • Live recording, overdub while Move plays, undo and part mute
  • Count-in and metronome
  • Step editing with Move's gestures: length, nudge, copy, loop length
  • Shift + step shortcuts in Move's layout
  • Per-clip quantize, non-destructive

Extension profiles. Twelve styles, from POP and CLAS to JAZZ and AMB, give
each chord in the scale its own extension in one move.

Editable modifier pads. Choose what each modifier pad does, from approach
chords to added tones such as 6/9, b9 or #11.

More chord extensions per pad: 6/9, 7b5, 7b9, 7#9, 7#11, 7b13, maj9#11,
13(no11) and 5.

  • PENTA and BLUES melody palettes
  • Right-hand bass pads (R.PAD)
  • Strum menu: direction, timing and velocity variation
  • Illustrated guide included as GUIDE.html

Changed

  • New navigation: Track 1–3 open CHORD, BASS and MELODY; Menu opens the clip view
  • LEAD is OFF, CNTR or FREE; WIDE spread is narrower and clearer
  • Held melody notes keep sounding through chord changes
  • Bass follows pad velocity; Shift + step 10 gives fixed full velocity
  • Lock BORROW with its pad + main encoder (was Shift + BORROW)
  • 0.1.0 projects keep their settings; going back to 0.1.0 can lose clips

Install

Download oktonik-module.tar.gz below, upload it at move.local:7700 and
restart Move. See the guide for everything else.

OKTONIK 0.1.0

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 02 Oct 19:34

OKTONIK 0.1.0

Harmonic performance instrument for Ableton Move / Schwung, by Skerry Vibe.

Play chords, adaptive melodies and independent bass together. Five focused
pages: PLAY, CHORD, MELODY, BASS and MIDI. This release is for live playing,
not sequencing or recording chord progressions.

Changes since rc.4

  • Shift + Track 1-4 opens a Schwung chain without leaving the performance.
Knobs edit the visible synth/effect. Back navigates to the chain and then
OKTONIK. Requires official Schwung 1.6.2+; no custom host patch.
  • PLAY retains the active chord and harmonic function in the idle footer.
  • Per-chord inversion can move downward or upward; AUTO is selectable between
-1 and ROOT, with Shift+turn as an additional shortcut.
  • Optional polyphonic melody aftertouch: MELODY knob 6 AT OFF/POLY, default OFF.
The receiving instrument must support polyphonic key pressure; this is not MPE.
  • Simple upward STRUM remains on PLAY/CHORD knob 7.

Install

Back up projects. Download oktonik-module.tar.gz, upload it through
Schwung Manager at move.local:7700, restart Move and select OKTONIK.
Do not select GitHub's Source code archives. OKTONIK generates MIDI, not audio:
set a receiving instrument and match routes/channels.

Existing schema-7 project settings are retained. Previous releases remain
available. This is still a Tool, not a chain MIDI FX module.

Verification and feedback

261 JavaScript tests and 55 DSP test groups pass locally, including DSP
address/undefined-behavior sanitizers. Linux ARM64 builds and package contents
are verified. The author has reported positive physical Move testing and
approved release. This is not exhaustive certification of every destination,
synth's aftertouch response or screen-reader interaction.

OKTONIK — Harmonic performance instrument

By Skerry Vibe. Live chords, adaptive melody and independent bass on Ableton Move / Schwung.

New since rc.2

  • Eight controls directly on PLAY: KEY, SCALE, EXT, OCT, SPRD, LEAD, STRUM and SUST, identical to CHORD. The Chord Map stays visible; touching or turning a knob shows its parameter and value in the footer.
  • More readable chord names: longer names use two lines at the original font size. Short names retain their single-line layout. Very long names still show ~ when truncated.
  • Updated illustrated guide and in-module help. No settings schema change.

Install

Download oktonik-public-0.1.0-rc.4.tar.gz from Assets below. Back up projects, upload the compressed archive through Schwung at move.local:7700, restart Move and select OKTONIK. Do not install GitHub's Source code archives.

Illustrated user guide · Report a bug

Existing OKTONIK settings are retained. Five focused pages: PLAY, CHORD, MELODY, BASS and MIDI. This preview focuses on live performance, not sequencing: no ARP, sequencer, recording, Capture or separate IDEAS mode.

Testing and feedback

The developer has play-tested rc.4 on Move and approved this preview. 216 JavaScript tests and 45 DSP behavioural test groups pass. Hardware coverage is not exhaustive; this is still a prerelease. Please report your OKTONIK/Move/Schwung versions, routes/channels, sustain settings and reproduction steps.

In development

We are exploring more expressive playing, richer harmonic suggestions and reusable musical ideas. These are not features of this preview and have no promised release date. The priority remains a reliable live instrument.

OKTONIK 0.1.0-rc.2

Harmonic performance instrument — by Skerry Vibe.

Live chords, adaptive melody and bass, with five focused pages. Public includes harmonic modifiers, Bass Gesture, per-pad editing, sustain and simple strum.

rc.2 introduces the OKTONIK identity and consistent branding. This preview is about playing and discovering harmony live, not programming chord sequences.

Upload the Public tar.gz through Schwung at move.local:7700 and restart Move. Back up first. Choose oktonik-public-0.1.0-rc.2.tar.gz from Assets, not the automatically generated Source code archives.

OKTONIK imports valid schema-7 Chord Pilot project data only when its own save file is absent. Original files remain untouched; settings are not continuously synchronised.

Five pages: PLAY, CHORD, MELODY, BASS and MIDI. Public has no IDEAS, ARP, sequencer, recording or Capture. Hardware acceptance testing remains required. Report version, Move/Schwung versions, MIDI routes/channels, sustain settings and reproduction steps with any issue.

211 JavaScript tests and 45 DSP behavioural test groups pass; hardware coverage is not exhaustive. This is a prerelease, not a final stability claim.

Richer harmonic suggestions, expressive strum/patterns and ways to capture musical ideas are being explored. These are not features of this preview and have no promised release date. Our priority is a reliable live instrument.
