Fluent New Tab — 4.10 Release Notes (2026-10-23)
Fluent New Tab 4.10 brings a major internal refactor that delivers substantial performance gains, alongside an upgraded wallpaper engine, smarter favicon resolution, and expanded customization for displays.

Permission Update (favicon):
We have added the favicon permission to manifest.json. Because this introduces a new permission, your browser may temporarily disable the extension until you approve the update. This permission is used exclusively by the new Favicon Resolver feature to query local cached icons locally on Chromium-based browsers, ensuring no private data is collected.
New Features
- Custom display formats and timezones: The Date and Time display settings have been redesigned with manual format presets, custom token support (such as
%HH:%mm:%ss), and manual IANA timezone configuration. Refer to HELP.md for supported tokens and timezone options. Contributed by @channel101 (#176) - Hidden feed drawer style: Added a "Hidden" appearance option for the feed drawer, completely concealing it until you scroll down for an ultra-clean home screen. (#169)
- Favicon resolver tree: Introduced an intelligent fallback resolver to reliably load favicons across private and problematic domains, leveraging Chrome's local API on Chromium with automatic fallback to Vemetric. (#164 )
- Independent display scaling: Each display type now remembers its own scale setting independently, and automatically expands when search bars or shortcuts are hidden while staying centered. (#167)
Enhancements
- Uncompressed wallpaper handling: Wallpaper conversion logic has been removed to preserve full original image quality. Lightweight files (up to 2.5 MB) are cached for instant startup, while larger files are routed to primary storage with clear disk-quota notices. fix #166
- Modern setup wizard: New installations now feature a streamlined splash screen with automatic language detection, removing the need for manual language selection during setup.
- Responsive display flow: The central display now dynamically adjusts its spacing with adjacent elements, preventing content overlaps when scaling up or down.
- Fluent icons and design polish: Updated icon assets to official Fluent Icons and polished interface styling across all core modules.
- Streamlined greeting display: Removed external emoji lookups from the greeting component to keep the interface lightweight and minimal.
Performance
- Modular architecture and memory optimization: Refactored the core HTML structure into modular components, reducing process memory by 6.44 MB (~10.6%) and shaving 50 KB (~4.1%) off the total package footprint.
