Status and troubleshooting

The extension is designed to be invisible while things work. When something is wrong, it tells you in two places — and for anything beyond this page, support.sonomos.ai has the full guides.

The toolbar badge

Badge Meaning
(empty) Healthy. Connected to the Locke desktop app.
off Screening is off.
! The desktop app can't be reached. In-scope requests are being blocked, not let through.
… Connecting.

An empty badge is deliberate: a privacy tool that demands attention while everything is fine trains you to ignore it.

The popup: two facts, not one

The popup shows Status and Screening separately, because they are different questions:

  • Status — can the extension reach the Locke desktop app?
  • Screening — is anything actually being screened?

A reachable app does not prove the screening behind it is running, so the extension refuses to claim "protected" on reachability alone. Screening shows Active only after a real request has actually been screened — evidence, not inference.

Common situations

"The extension says it can't reach Locke." Start the Locke desktop app. If it's already running, quit and reopen it — it re-registers the messaging host on startup. The desktop app owns installing that host, so reinstalling the app is the fix of last resort, not editing anything by hand.

"An AI site suddenly fails to send messages." That's usually the fail-closed posture doing its job while the desktop app is unreachable — check the badge. If Locke is up and one site still fails, support.sonomos.ai has per-site guidance, and a bug report with the site name helps us fix the catalogue: open an issue.

"Something was blocked and I want to know why." Blocks carry a plain-language reason, surfaced on the failed request in the page's developer console. The reason distinguishes policy ("this contained something that shouldn't leave") from infrastructure ("screening wasn't available, so nothing was sent").

"I installed the extension but not the desktop app." The extension has nobody to ask, so in-scope requests are blocked. Install Locke from sonomos.ai/locke — it registers everything the extension needs.
