updateself 2.1.0

This release adds explicit self-management commands:

updateself --check-self-update
updateself --self-update --dry-run
updateself --self-update
updateself --uninstall --dry-run
updateself --uninstall

Self-update and uninstall request confirmation by default. Use --yes only after
reviewing the plan. Normal system/tool update runs do not replace updateself.

Git/archive and macOS package installations download the latest stable release,
verify SHA256SUMS, and verify provenance when GitHub CLI is available. Install
locations are preserved. Git/archive installation failures restore previous
managed files. macOS installers use the native Installer transaction; no automatic
rollback is promised. Modified Git/macOS files are retained during uninstall.

Other native packages use their owning manager and its configured repositories.
No external registry submissions or repository configuration are added. Until an
updateself repository/channel is available, install matching GitHub release
packages manually. Declarative Nix installs must be edited in their configuration;
modern imperative profile detection requires Python 3.

The macOS installers remain unsigned and not notarized. HTTPS checksums provide
release integrity; they are not platform code signing. See the Wiki Self-Management
guide for supported owners, dependencies, recovery and limitations.

GPL-3.0-only.

updateself v2.0.0

@spaniakos spaniakos released this 15 Oct 20:00
8dd4a3d

updateself 2.0.0 expands the original APT updater to macOS, major Linux distributions, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, NetBSD and Nix.

Use updateself or its shortcut updsf to update installed system packages and supported CLI tools, including Snap, Flatpak and explicitly selected Python/pip environments.

Highlights

  • Cross-platform package-manager support.
  • Ownership-aware tool updates and explicit Python environment selection.
  • Dry runs, selectable components, failure summaries and user-level execution.
  • Installation and removal scripts, manual pages and shell completions.
  • GitHub Wiki documentation and automated package builds with installation checks.

Start with updateself --dry-run, then use updateself --ask to review update commands.

What's Changed

  • Introduce updateself v2: cross-platform updates, installation and package CI by @spaniakos in #4
  • Prepare 2.0.0 release downloads and migrate Actions to Node 24 by @spaniakos in #5
  • Finalize updateself 2.0.0 for release by @spaniakos in #6

Migration and Package Notes

  • Run as your normal account; privileged commands request elevation.
  • -n continues to ask for confirmation; -y is the default.
  • Cleanup and APT dist-upgrade require explicit options.
  • Missing optional tools are skipped.
  • macOS installers are unsigned and not notarized.
  • Alpine packages use a temporary CI signing key; use the Git/archive installer unless you have an appropriate local trust process.
  • Native packages target their build platforms. Fedora-built RPMs do not certify every RHEL/SUSE release.
  • Packages have not been submitted to external registries or distribution repositories.
