SpeedBreaker v0.2.2
Fixed
- Black grass on AMD Radeon cards, for real this time (#67, #54): distant grass on the roadside
verges still turned black on Radeon RX 6000 cards under Windows, because v0.2.1's fix was aimed
at the wrong thing. AMD's Windows driver picked the close-up row of lighting values in the shader
that draws the far part of the verge. On AMD's own driver, SpeedBreaker now builds those shaders
in a shape the driver compiles correctly; testers on an RX 6750 XT confirmed the grass is right
with the test build. Other graphics cards run exactly the same shaders as before. - Shadows at the edges of the picture (#81): the sun's shadows now reach the left and right
edges at every screen shape. On an ultrawide screen the sides used to come out unshadowed, and
at 16:9 the ground near the camera did too, as on the Xbox 360 itself. The shadow map now covers
the whole view, so shadows are a little softer than on the 360; Shadow Resolution 1.5x or 2x
(Settings > Graphics) sharpens them again. - HDR and the settings menu: with HDR Output on, the game seen through the settings overlay
now looks as it does in SDR. It no longer brightens under the panel when HDR comes on, and bright
highlights no longer shine through the window. - Windows (beta): the sun's shadows cost the graphics chip less each frame, with the same
picture, as in Windows beta 4.
How to update
- Mac: drag the new SpeedBreaker into Applications and choose Replace, then allow it once more with Open Anyway (System Settings > Privacy & Security).
- Steam Deck, Steam Machine, Steam Frame and Linux: unpack the new download over the old folder (
~/Games/SpeedBreaker). Your Steam shortcut keeps working. - Everywhere: your saves, settings and the installed game are kept, and no disc image is needed.
More about it
- Shadows:
NFSMW_SHADOW_FIT=gamebrings back the original fit for comparison. - AMD: the log's
[renderer] shader registers:line says "variables in pixel shaders" on AMD's
own Windows driver.NFSMW_SCALAR_REGS=0turns the fix off.

All downloads are built from this release's source, commit 496451a. The first line of the
game's log, and Settings > Advanced, say SpeedBreaker v0.2.2 (496451a).
The Source code archives that GitHub adds hold SpeedBreaker's own source, with no game code or
data. Building from them needs your own disc; see

iPhone and iPad: the experimental IPA
SpeedBreaker-0.2.2-ios.ipa is signed by nobody: a sideloading tool such as AltStore signs it
with your own Apple Account and installs it. The IPA itself hasn't been installed on a device
yet: the iPhones and iPad it was tested on ran the same app built and signed with Xcode. Please
report how it goes, working or not, with your device and tool.
- The game asks iOS for more memory than most apps (two entitlements: Extended Virtual Addressing
and Increased Memory Limit). A free Apple Account can give at most the second, and only with
some tools: AltStore Classic 2.2 or later is expected to keep it; SideStore 0.7 drops both.
Without them the game may not start, or iOS may close it in busy scenes. When iOS refuses the
memory, the game says so on screen instead of closing. - A free Apple Account's apps stop opening after 7 days until the tool refreshes them, and at most
3 sideloaded apps can be active at once. These are Apple's limits. - iOS or iPadOS 17 or later, on an A15-class chip or newer, with a controller or keyboard.
- Coming from a build you made yourself, the IPA installs as a separate app: install the game again
from your disc image. Saves made in the old app stay with it. - Sideloading the IPA
has the steps and which tools keep what. Building it yourself with Xcode still works as before.
How these downloads were tested
Each download attached here was tested before release. It was unpacked or opened as the setup
steps say, with a fresh home folder, and the game was installed through the installer from a disc
image:
- x86-64: on a Steam Machine: races at 60 fps, with FSR 1, at 1280x800 with Fill Screen at 1x, and in two-player split screen; the PAL Spanish disc installed and started in Spanish. Smooth Motion on a simulated 120 Hz display showed 120 pictures a second, and 90 on a 90 Hz one. Quit Game and SIGTERM quit cleanly.
- arm64: on a Steam Frame, outside the headset: the installer, a race, Spanish menus, two-player split screen, FSR 1, Quit Game and SIGTERM worked.
- Mac: races at 60 fps on a MacBook Pro (M1 Pro, macOS 27) and a Mac Studio (M4 Max); on the MacBook, a pause and resume mid-race, and the PAL Spanish disc installed and raced in Spanish. In a macOS 15 virtual machine all 31 checks passed on the second run; the first stopped mid-race on a known fault in the virtual machine's own graphics driver.
- Windows (beta): on a laptop with Intel UHD Graphics: 28 race loads with no hang, pause and resume, and the same speed as beta 4.
- Updating from v0.2.1: each download installed over the published v0.2.1 kept the settings, saves and installed game, and showed What's new for v0.2.2.
- The fixes: with the shadow fix switched off for comparison, the picture matched v0.2.1's on the Steam Machine, the Mac and Windows; with it on, it differed only where the sun's shadows now reach. The AMD fix was confirmed by testers on an RX 6750 XT with the test build; we have no AMD card to run it on. The HDR settings-menu fix was checked by tests and by eye on a Mac's HDR display in SpeedBreaker: Carbon, which shares the code.
- iPhone and iPad: the IPA file was checked for its contents and signing layout, as before; it hasn't been installed on a device from this file.

Known issues and limits
- Mac, the first time you open it: the app isn't notarized by Apple, so macOS refuses to
open it and offers Done or Move to Trash. Click Done. Then go to System Settings >
Privacy & Security, scroll down to the message that SpeedBreaker was blocked, click Open
Anyway, and confirm with Open Anyway and your password (or Touch ID). After that it opens
normally.- The Open Anyway button only stays there for about an hour after the refusal. If it's gone,
open the app again. - You do this once per download, so once more after each update. Control-click > Open no
longer skips it. - The app isn't damaged. If macOS ever says it is, check the download against its
.sha256and
download it again. - Apple silicon only, macOS 15 or later.
- The Open Anyway button only stays there for about an hour after the refusal. If it's gone,
- macOS 15 Sequoia was tested in a virtual machine, not yet on a real Mac. If you play on
macOS 15, a short report in the issues, working or not, with your Mac's model, would help a lot. - Mac frame pacing was measured on a MacBook Pro (M1 Pro) with its 120 Hz ProMotion screen, in
fullscreen. Other 120 Hz screens (other Macs, external displays) and windowed play weren't
measured; a frame that isn't ready in time is shown when it is, as before. - A Brightness slider moved before v0.1.4: if you moved the game's own slider in an earlier
version (where it did nothing) and the game has saved since, v0.1.4 and later...
SpeedBreaker v0.2.2 for Windows (beta 5)
SpeedBreaker v0.2.2 for Windows: beta 5
This is a beta. It's the same v0.2.2 as the Mac and SteamOS downloads, with the shadow saving
Windows beta 4 brought. Please try it and tell us how it runs, especially if
you have an AMD or NVIDIA graphics card.
Download
SpeedBreaker-0.2.2-windows-x64-beta.zip, below, with its .sha256 checksum file.
What's new since beta 4
v0.2.2's changes (the game shows them once, under "What's new", the first time it starts):
- AMD Radeon RX 6000: no more black grass on the far roadside verges (#67, #54). On AMD's own
Windows driver, pixel shaders now keep the Xbox 360's registers as separate variables, which that
driver compiles correctly. Other graphics cards and drivers run the same shaders as before (the log
says[renderer] shader registers: arraythere). - The sun's shadows reach the edges of the picture, at 16:9 too (#81). The game fitted its shadow
map to a narrower view than the one it draws, so the picture's sides, near the camera, came out
unshadowed (the Xbox 360 did that too). The shadow map now covers the whole view, so its shadows are
a little softer than on the 360; Settings > Graphics > Shadow Resolution 1.5x or 2x sharpens them. - HDR: with HDR Output on, the game seen through the settings overlay looks as it does in SDR.
- Cheaper sun shadows, as in beta 4: now part of the release itself.
On our test laptop (Intel UHD Graphics 620, Core i5-10210U), in the same session as beta 4: the
same frame rate in the main menu (36.7 vs 36.9 fps) and in a busy race (29.1 vs 28.9 fps), the same
CPU use, power and temperature. Drawing the shadow map over the whole view costs the graphics chip
about 0.7 ms per frame in a race on that laptop (within run-to-run spread). The shadow saving was
checked again texel for texel (no difference).
NVIDIA and AMD cards aren't measured here. That's what we'd like your help with.
If something looks or runs worse
Each change can be turned off without going back to beta 4. Open a Command Prompt in the game's
folder, set one of these, then run SpeedBreaker.exe from the same window:
set NFSMW_SHADOW_FIT=game (the shadow map's old, narrower fit)
set NFSMW_SHADOW_DEFER=0 (shadows drawn as in beta 3)
set NFSMW_SCALAR_REGS=0 (AMD's driver only: the shaders as in beta 4)
If one of them fixes it, please tell us which (see below).
Updating from beta 4
Extract the new zip into a new folder and run SpeedBreaker.exe from there: the installed game, your
saves and your settings in %LOCALAPPDATA%\SpeedBreaker carry over (no disc image needed). Then delete
the old folder. In portable mode, move your portable.txt and the data and cache folders next to the
new SpeedBreaker.exe. The game shows "Updated to v0.2.2" once.
What's been tested, and what hasn't
Tested on a laptop with Intel UHD Graphics 620 (Core i5-10210U, Windows 11 25H2) and a 60 Hz screen,
against beta 4 in the same session: the main menu and a race (frame rate, frame pacing, GPU time, CPU,
power and temperature), the picture (the shadow-map check, and screenshots), race loads including pausing
and resuming, a bug report, What's new, and the unit tests.
Not tested yet: AMD and NVIDIA graphics cards here (the AMD fix was tested by the players who reported
#67), desktop PCs, 120 and 144 Hz monitors, HDR output on Windows, recent Intel Arc graphics, and Windows 10.
What you need
- Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit.
- A CPU with AVX2: Intel Haswell (2013) or newer, or any AMD Ryzen. Without it the game says so
and closes. - A graphics card with Vulkan 1.2 and a current driver.
- Your own backup of your own Xbox 360 disc of Need for Speed: Most Wanted (2005), the USA
(NTSC-U) or the European (PAL) Spanish one: an.iso, or the extracted disc files. No
game files come with SpeedBreaker. - About 7.5 GB of free space. A controller is recommended; the keyboard works too.
Install
- Download the zip, right-click it, choose Extract All, and open the extracted folder.
- Double-click
SpeedBreaker.exe. - SpeedBreaker isn't signed, so Windows may show "Windows protected your PC" (Microsoft
Defender SmartScreen doesn't recognize the app yet). Click More info, then Run anyway.
You can check the download first: put the.sha256file next to the zip and run
certutil -hashfile SpeedBreaker-0.2.2-windows-x64-beta.zip SHA256in a Command Prompt; the
hash must match the file's. If Windows blocks it with no "Run anyway" (Smart App Control does),
it can't be started on that PC for now. - The installer looks for your
.isoin your user folder, Downloads, Desktop, Documents and Games
and on your other drives, or you browse for it (or for an extracted disc folder). It checks the
game, says which disc it is, and shows where the game will go (Internal storage, another drive,
or Choose a folder...). It copies and verifies every file (a few minutes). Then Start the
game.
Saves, settings, logs and the installed game go in %LOCALAPPDATA%\SpeedBreaker. Check for
Updates isn't available on Windows yet; watch the Releases page. README.txt in the zip has
controls, portable mode and uninstalling.
Reporting a problem
- In the game, open the settings (F1, or Back + Start on a controller), go to
Advanced, and choose Save Bug Report. A zip appears on your Desktop. - Open an issue with
"Windows beta" in the title: your graphics card, CPU and monitor (and its refresh rate), what you
did and what happened, and attach that zip. Your Windows user name is left out of it.
If the game freezes, wait about 20 seconds before closing it: it then writes a hang-....txt file into
%LOCALAPPDATA%\SpeedBreaker\logs, which tells us where it stopped. Please attach it. If the game doesn't
start at all, attach the newest files from that folder and a screenshot of any message.
Unofficial Windows builds made by others (for example from forks) aren't supported here:
we can't tell how they differ from this one. If you used one, please try this beta and report
with it.
Thanks
Thanks to siddharthkuradia, agustinlopez9 and ZeroDarlingxx for the #67 reports, RenderDoc captures and
testing; to Nelson340 and krittinen for #81; and to rafidwayne, whose Windows port (pull request #39) fixed
how the audio thread waits on Windows (in since beta 1).

SpeedBreaker v0.2.1 for Windows (beta 4)
SpeedBreaker v0.2.1 for Windows: beta 4
This is a beta. It's Windows beta 3 with one change: the sun's shadows take less work for the graphics card.
The picture is the same. Nothing else is different from beta 3. Please try it and
tell us how it runs, especially if you have an NVIDIA or AMD graphics card.
Download
SpeedBreaker-0.2.1-windows-x64-beta.zip, below, with its .sha256 checksum file. (It has the same file name
as beta 3's zip; the checksum tells them apart.)
What's new since beta 3
- Cheaper sun shadows. Every frame the game draws the sun's shadow map and then copies it, twice, into a
texture the scene reads. That copying was a big share of each frame's work on the graphics card. Now the scene
reads the shadow map directly and the copy is skipped when nothing else needs it. The Mac, iPhone and Android
versions have worked this way since v0.2.0; now Windows does too. - On our test laptop (Intel UHD Graphics 620, Core i5-10210U), in the same session as beta 3: the main menu
went from about 31.4 to 36.8 fps, and a busy race from about 26.9 to 30.6 fps. The graphics chip spent about
4.5 ms less per frame on each (31 to 26 ms in the menu, 36 to 32 ms in the race). CPU use, power and
temperature didn't change. On a PC that already holds 60 fps you won't see a higher frame rate, but the
graphics card should be less busy (lower GPU usage). - The picture is unchanged: the game checked every shadow map it drew this way against the old way, texel
for texel, in the menu and in a race (no difference at all), and our screenshots of the same moments are
identical to beta 3's. - NVIDIA and AMD cards aren't measured yet. We expect a saving there too, but we don't know how big. That's
what we'd like your help with (below).
That's the only change. If your graphics driver can't read the shadow map directly (the game checks once at
start), it simply works as in beta 3.
If something looks or runs worse
You can turn the change off without going back to beta 3. Open a Command Prompt in the game's folder and run
set NFSMW_SHADOW_DEFER=0
SpeedBreaker.exe
which draws the shadows exactly as beta 3 did. If that fixes it, please tell us (see the test below).
Help us measure: one test, two runs (about 5 minutes)
This beta draws the sun's shadows with less work for the graphics card (the picture should be exactly the same).
To see what it does on your PC, please run the same short test twice, once as it comes and once the old way, and
send us both bug reports.
- Start the game normally. Go to the main menu and leave it there, without touching anything, for 1 minute. Then
start a Quick Race (any track, but use the same one both times) and drive for 2 minutes. - Still in the race, press F1 (Back + Start on a controller), go to Advanced, and choose
Save Bug Report. Quit the game. - Open a Command Prompt in the game's folder and run:
Do exactly the same as in step 1 (the same menu minute, the same track, 2 minutes), then Save Bug Report again
set NFSMW_SHADOW_DEFER=0 SpeedBreaker.exe
and quit. - Attach both zips to one issue titled "Windows beta: shadow test", with your graphics card, CPU, monitor
refresh rate, and whether either run felt different (smoother, choppier, hotter, louder). If you can, also
note the GPU usage % (Task Manager > Performance > GPU) in the menu in each run.
Keep every setting the same in both runs (don't change Internal Resolution, Frame Rate or Shadow Resolution between
them). Each zip holds the game's logs for its last five sessions, with the frame rate and the GPU time every few
seconds; nothing else is measured.
If the shadows look wrong in the first run (missing, flickering, blocky, shadow "acne", black or white patches,
shadows in the wrong place) but right with NFSMW_SHADOW_DEFER=0: save a bug report while it's on screen (it
includes a screenshot), then one at the same spot with NFSMW_SHADOW_DEFER=0, and say so in the issue: that's the
most useful report we can get. If the game crashes or freezes only in the first run, play with
NFSMW_SHADOW_DEFER=0 until a fix (the variable has to be set in the same Command Prompt each time), and attach the
crash or hang file as in "Reporting a problem" (for a freeze: wait about 20 seconds before closing it).
Updating from beta 3
Extract the new zip into a new folder and run SpeedBreaker.exe from there: the installed game, your saves
and your settings in %LOCALAPPDATA%\SpeedBreaker carry over (no disc image needed). Then delete the old
folder. In portable mode, move your portable.txt and the data and cache folders next to the new
SpeedBreaker.exe. The version number stays v0.2.1, so the game doesn't show a "What's new" note this time;
Settings > Advanced shows the new build line (below).

SpeedBreaker v0.2.1
What's new
- HDR output (Settings > Display, off by default). On a Mac with an HDR display, on SteamOS and
the Steam Deck OLED with HDR on, and on Linux and Windows PCs whose system is in HDR, the sun,
headlights and lit signs go brighter than white while the rest of the picture stays as it was.
HDR Strength sets how far (2x by default, up to 4x), and large bright areas such as tyre smoke
are held back so they don't glow as a flat blob. Implemented by @danielgpinheiro, from
@DoubleDips's idea (#25). - Shadow Resolution (Settings > Graphics): the sun's shadows at 1.5x or 2x for sharper edges,
at some GPU time and memory. 1x, the default, is as on the Xbox 360. Thanks to krittinen (pull
request #52). - Cooler Colors (Settings > Display, off by default): a cooler picture with less of the game's
yellow. Thanks to Namiidev (pull request #50).
Fixed
- Black grass on AMD Radeon cards (#67, #54): distant grass on the roadside verges turned black
on Radeon RX 6000 cards under Windows. The fix was made from testers' reports and captures and
hasn't been run on an AMD card by us yet: if you still see it with Windows beta 3, please say so in #67. - Anisotropic Filtering at 8x or 16x drew a light outline round dirt-road decals in shadow (#70).
- Building for iPhone and iPad no longer stops silently when the Spanish disc's code isn't built.
Thanks to logicsandbox (pull request #72).
More about it
- HDR uses the display's extended range on a Mac (or HDR10, chosen with HDR Format) and HDR10
everywhere else, where the system offers it. HDR Paper White sets how bright ordinary white is in
HDR10; Auto matches the system (100 nits on a Mac, 200 on Windows and Linux, 400 on SteamOS and
the Steam Deck). The settings menu itself stays at standard brightness. Not on iPhone and iPad. - The Spanish (PAL) disc now installs on iPhone and iPad too.

iPhone and iPad: the experimental IPA
SpeedBreaker-0.2.1-ios.ipa is signed by nobody: a sideloading tool such as AltStore signs it
with your own Apple Account and installs it.
It was unpacked or opened as the setup
steps say, with a fresh home folder, and the game was installed through the installer from a disc
image:
- x86-64: on a Steam Machine: races at 60 fps with the default upscaling, with FSR 1, and at 1280x800 with Fill Screen at 1x; two-player split screen never dropped below 59.5 fps; the PAL Spanish disc installed and started in Spanish with Spanish movies and speech. Smooth Motion on a simulated 120 Hz display showed 120 pictures a second in two races, and 90 on a 90 Hz one. Quit Game and SIGTERM quit cleanly.
- arm64: on a Steam Frame, outside the headset: the installer, a race, Spanish menus, two-player split screen, FSR 1, Quit Game and SIGTERM worked.
- Mac: on a MacBook Pro (M1 Pro, macOS 27) and in a macOS 15 virtual machine (all 31 checks passed): races at 60 fps; the PAL Spanish disc installed and raced at 60 fps in Spanish.
- Updating from v0.2.0: each download installed over the published v0.2.0 kept the settings, saves and installed game, and showed What's new for v0.2.1. The Windows beta was also installed over beta 2.
- iPhone and iPad: on an iPhone 18 Pro Max (iOS 27), a build of this code installed the Spanish disc and started in Spanish through its intro movies; a race on the Spanish disc hasn't been driven on a phone yet. The IPA file itself was checked for its contents and signing layout, as before; it hasn't been installed on a device from this file.
- New settings: on every platform, Shadow Resolution and Cooler Colors are where they should be, and the HDR rows show everywhere but iPhone and iPad. HDR output itself was checked on a Mac's HDR display and on a Steam Deck OLED, where SteamOS marks the HDR part of the brightness bar while the game runs; HDR10 on Linux and Windows PCs hasn't been seen on a real HDR screen here yet.

SpeedBreaker v0.2.1 Windows beta 3
SpeedBreaker v0.2.1 for Windows: beta 3
This is a beta. It's the same v0.2.1 as the Mac and SteamOS downloads, now for Windows: HDR output,
Shadow Resolution, Cooler Colors, and a likely fix for black roadside grass on AMD Radeon cards. So far the
Windows version has been tested on one laptop with Intel UHD Graphics. Please try it and
tell us how it runs, especially on the PCs we couldn't test.
Download
SpeedBreaker-0.2.1-windows-x64-beta.zip, below, with its .sha256 checksum file.
What's new since beta 2
- A fix for distant grass turning black on AMD Radeon cards (#67, #54). On Radeon RX 6000 cards
under Windows, the grass on the roadside verges turned black in the distance. Shaders that look up
their lighting per pixel now read it the way every driver handles; other GPUs show the same picture
as before. If something looks wrong that didn't in beta 2, starting the game with the environment
variableNFSMW_CONST_REL_RING=0brings back the old way; please tell us if it helps. - HDR Output (Settings > Display, off by default) on a PC whose Windows display is in HDR: the
game's highlights (the sun, headlights, lit signs) reach the display's extended range. HDR
Strength sets how far highlights go above white (2x by default, up to 4x); HDR Paper White sets
how bright ordinary white is (Auto: 200 nits on Windows). A mostly white frame is dimmed toward
standard range, so a full-screen logo doesn't become a flash. The settings overlay stays at
standard brightness. If Windows isn't in HDR, the picture stays standard range. Implemented by
@danielgpinheiro, from @DoubleDips's idea (#25). - Shadow Resolution (Settings > Graphics): draws the sun's shadows at 1.5x or 2x for sharper
edges, at some GPU time and memory. 1x, the default, is as on the Xbox 360. Thanks to krittinen
(pull request #52). - Cooler Colors (Settings > Display, off by default): a cooler picture with less of the game's
yellow. Thanks to Namiidev (pull request #50). - Anisotropic Filtering at 8x or 16x no longer draws a light outline round dirt-road decals in
shadow (#70).
The other v0.2.1 changes are for other platforms (HDR Format on a Mac, the iPhone and iPad build
script).
Updating from beta 2
Extract the new zip into a new folder and run SpeedBreaker.exe from there: the installed game,
your saves and your settings in %LOCALAPPDATA%\SpeedBreaker carry over (no disc image needed),
and the game shows what's new once. Then delete the old folder. In portable mode, move your
portable.txt and the data and cache folders next to the new SpeedBreaker.exe.
What's been tested, and what hasn't
Tested on a laptop with Intel UHD Graphics 620 (Core i5-10210U, Windows 11 25H2) and a 60 Hz
screen: updating from beta 2 with saves and settings kept, a fresh install of the USA disc,
portable mode, racing, split screen with two controllers, FSR 1 upscaling, fullscreen, Quit
Game, the Controls page, Language: Spanish, Save Bug Report, and the new settings pages. On that
laptop a race runs at about 27 fps at 1x, the same as beta 2 (an integrated GPU of 2019 is below
what the game needs for 60). The grass fix (#67) was checked there for no change on Intel; it was
made for AMD from testers' reports, and hasn't been run on an AMD card by us.
Not tested yet:
- AMD graphics cards, including the grass fix itself: if you reported #67 or #54, please check
the verges with this beta. - NVIDIA graphics cards.
- HDR Output on Windows: the tested laptop has no HDR display.
- 120 Hz and 144 Hz monitors. At 120 Hz each frame should stay on screen for exactly two
refreshes; at 144 Hz the game shows a one-time note about the uneven refresh. Both need the
graphics driver to report when frames reach the screen, which the tested laptop's driver
doesn't, so this has only been simulated. - Recent Intel Arc graphics (including the Arc 130T/140T in Core Ultra laptops, see #42).
- The European (PAL) Spanish disc was tested in beta 2 and its code is unchanged since; this time it
wasn't installed again. - Desktop PCs in general, other Windows 10/11 versions, and real Xbox controllers on Windows.
Expect rough edges. If something's wrong on your PC, a bug report is the most useful thing you
can send.
You can check the download first: put the.sha256file next to the zip and run
certutil -hashfile SpeedBreaker-0.2.1-windows-x64-beta.zip SHA256in a Command Prompt; the
hash must match the file's.
- Open an issue with
"Windows beta" in the title: your graphics card and monitor (and its refresh rate), what you
did and what happened, and attach that zip. Your Windows user name is left out of it.
If the game doesn't start at all, attach the newest files from %LOCALAPPDATA%\SpeedBreaker\logs
and a screenshot of any message.
Unofficial Windows builds made by others (for example from forks) aren't supported here:
we can't tell how they differ from this one. If you used one, please try this beta and report
with it.
Thanks
Thanks to the testers who reported the black grass on AMD cards (#67, #54), to
@danielgpinheiro and @DoubleDips for HDR, krittinen for Shadow Resolution, Namiidev for Cooler
Colors, and to rafidwayne, whose Windows port (pull request #39) fixed how the audio thread waits on
Windows (in since beta 1).

SpeedBreaker v0.2.0
What's new
- The European (PAL) Spanish disc is supported. One app plays either disc: the PAL one starts
in Spanish, with its Spanish movies and police radio (Settings > Game > Language still switches
the menus and race text). Installing it beside a USA install keeps both, each with its own saves.
The USA disc plays exactly as before. - Smooth Motion on SteamOS and Linux PCs (Settings > Display): up to 120 fps on a 120 Hz
screen, and 90 on a 90 Hz one. It drops to an even 60 whenever pictures can't be shown on time.
Not on the Steam Deck, which stays at a steady 60. - Cheaper shadows on Macs and iPhones: the sun's shadows cost the graphics chip less each frame,
and look the same. - Lower CPU use on Macs: the game waits instead of spinning while it has nothing to do. Thanks
to Simonxdd (pull request #48). - Settings... in the Mac menu bar (Cmd+,). Thanks to SOHAM4884 (pull request #47).
- Internal Resolution names the real size: each entry shows what it renders on your screen
(a Steam Deck with Fill Screen shows 1x (1280x800)), and Auto shows what it picked. - A new app icon.
More about it
- The installer tells the two discs apart, says which one it found, and checks every file against
that disc's list. Other regions (German and the other PAL discs) can't install yet. - The game is about twice the size it was: each disc's code is built in.
- Split screen renders at most what Auto would for your screen (3440x1440 at Internal Resolution
3x: 3440x1440), so it holds 60 fps where it dipped now and then; single player keeps your setting. - Smooth Motion on SteamOS and Linux is offered only at 120 and 90 Hz (144 and 165 Hz can't show
it evenly), and not on a Steam Deck (NFSMW_HFR_DECK=1offers it there, to try).

How these downloads were tested
Each download attached here was tested before release. It was unpacked or opened as the setup

image:
- x86-64: on a Steam Machine: races at 60 fps with the default upscaling, with FSR 1, and at 1280x800 with Fill Screen at 1x; two-player split screen at 3440x1440 never dropped below 59.5 fps; the PAL Spanish disc installed beside the USA one, started in Spanish with Spanish movies and speech, and raced at 60 fps. Smooth Motion on a simulated 120 Hz display showed 120 and 114.7 pictures a second in two races, and 90 on a 90 Hz one; it isn't offered at 60 Hz or on a Steam Deck. Quit Game and SIGTERM quit cleanly.
- arm64: on a Steam Frame (SteamOS 0.4.5), outside the headset: the installer, a race, Spanish menus, two-player split screen, FSR 1, Quit Game and SIGTERM worked.
- Mac: on a MacBook Pro (M1 Pro, macOS 27) and in a macOS 15 virtual machine (all 31 checks passed): races at 60 fps; the PAL Spanish disc installed and raced at 60 fps in Spanish; Settings... (Cmd+,) opens the settings; with the settings open the game used about 0.6 CPU cores, against 2.5 for v0.1.9.
- Updating from v0.1.9: each download installed over the published v0.1.9 kept the settings, saves and installed game, and showed What's new for v0.2.0. The Windows beta was also installed over beta 1.
- iPhone and iPad IPA: it includes both discs' code; its contents and signing layout were checked as for v0.1.9; it hasn't been installed on a device from this file.

SpeedBreaker v0.2.0 Windows beta 2
SpeedBreaker v0.2.0 for Windows: beta 2
This is a beta. It's the same v0.2.0 as the Mac and SteamOS downloads, now for Windows: the
European (PAL) Spanish disc, a folder picker in the installer, and everything since beta 1. So far
the Windows version has been tested on one laptop with Intel UHD Graphics. Please try it and
tell us how it runs, especially on the PCs we couldn't test.
Download
SpeedBreaker-0.2.0-windows-x64-beta.zip, below, with its .sha256 checksum file.
What's new since beta 1
- Choose a folder... in the installer (#45). On the install page, the arrows beside "Internal
storage" go round to Choose a folder..., which opens Windows' own folder dialog. An empty or
new folder is used as it is; any other folder gets aSpeedBreaker Gamefolder inside it, and
the top of a drive getsSpeedBreaker\game. Folders in OneDrive aren't accepted: OneDrive can
keep files online only, and the game reads them as it plays. In portable mode the dialog starts
in SpeedBreaker's own folder. - The European (PAL) Spanish disc is supported. One download plays either disc: the PAL one
starts in Spanish, with its Spanish movies and police radio (Settings > Game > Language still
switches the menus and race text). Installing it beside a USA install keeps both, each with its
own saves. The USA disc plays exactly as before. Other regions (German and the other PAL discs)
can't install yet. - Internal Resolution names the real size (Settings > Graphics): each entry shows what it
renders, and Auto shows what it picked. - A new app icon.
- Split screen renders at most what Auto would for your screen, so it holds 60 fps; single player
keeps your setting. - The download is bigger (24 MB zipped, 80 MB unpacked): each disc's code is built in.
The other v0.2.0 changes are for other platforms (Smooth Motion on SteamOS and Linux, cheaper
shadows and lower CPU use on Macs, Settings... in the Mac menu bar).
Updating from beta 1
Extract the new zip into a new folder and run SpeedBreaker.exe from there: the installed game,
your saves and your settings in %LOCALAPPDATA%\SpeedBreaker carry over (no disc image needed),
and the game shows what's new once. Then delete the old folder. In portable mode, move your
portable.txt and the data and cache folders next to the new SpeedBreaker.exe.
What's been tested, and what hasn't
Tested on a laptop with Intel UHD Graphics 620 (Core i5-10210U, Windows 11 25H2) and a 60 Hz
screen: installing the PAL Spanish disc from its disc image through the installer's own pages,
with Choose a folder... (and a OneDrive folder refused), racing in Spanish; the USA disc;
the default install place and portable mode; updating from beta 1 with saves and settings
kept; split screen with two controllers, FSR 1 upscaling, fullscreen, Quit Game, the Controls page,
Language: Spanish, and Save Bug Report. On that laptop a race runs at about 27 fps at 1x, the same
as beta 1 (an integrated GPU of 2019 is below what the game needs for 60).
Not tested yet (no reports from testers so far):
- NVIDIA and AMD graphics cards.
- Desktop PCs in general, other Windows 10/11 versions, and real Xbox controllers on Windows.
Expect rough edges. If something's wrong on your PC, a bug report is the most useful thing you
can send.
You can check the download first: put the.sha256file next to the zip and run
certutil -hashfile SpeedBreaker-0.2.0-windows-x64-beta.zip SHA256in a Command Prompt; the
hash must match the file's.
- Open an issue with
"Windows beta" in the title: your graphics card and monitor (and its refresh rate), what you
did and what happened, and attach that zip.
If you used one, please try this beta and report
with it.
Thanks
Thanks to Ubro92 for the folder picker request (#45), and to rafidwayne, whose Windows port (pull
request #39) fixed how the audio thread waits on Windows (in since beta 1).

SpeedBreaker v0.1.9
What's new
- Nine more languages (Settings > Game > Language): French, German, Italian, Spanish, Dutch,
Swedish, Danish, Polish and Finnish, from the USA disc's own files. The menus and the race text
switch (European languages show km/h) the next time the game starts; the movies and the speech
stay in English, as the USA disc has them. English stays the default. Thanks to
wendersonrodrigues, who found where the game picks its language (pull request #26). - Fill Screen renders the screen's own shape, so it's sharper on screens taller than 16:9: a
Steam Deck draws 1280x800 at 1x, pixel for pixel, instead of stretching 720 rows to 800. 16:9
screens look exactly as before. The menu still labels 1x as "720p"; on a Steam Deck with Fill Screen,
1x and Auto both draw 1280x800 (the label is fixed in the next version). Thanks to krittinen for the report and the screenshots
(issue #34).
Fixed
- Mac: a wired Xbox One or Series controller can't rumble (macOS takes the rumble and the
controller does nothing). The game now says so once: pair it over Bluetooth for rumble.
More about it
- The line under the Language row says what your installed files give the language you choose.
The row isn't shown on iPhone and iPad. - SteamOS and Linux: the log names a graphics card's PCIe link and warns when the card reaches
the game's memory over PCIe, to help track down slow GPUs (issue #40). NFSMW_NATIVE_SHAPE=0keeps the old 16:9-shaped frame for a run, to compare.

iPhone and iPad: the experimental IPA
SpeedBreaker-0.1.9-ios.ipa is signed by nobody: a sideloading tool such as AltStore signs it
with your own Apple Account and installs it.
It was unpacked or opened as the setup
steps say, with a fresh home folder, and the game was installed through the installer from a disc
image:
- x86-64: on a Steam Machine (SteamOS 3.8): races at 60 fps with the default upscaling and with FSR 1; two-player split screen at 60 fps; at 1280x800 with Fill Screen, 1x draws 1280x800 and races at 60 fps; Language: Spanish shows Spanish menus with English movies and speech. On a simulated 120 Hz display 99.99% of frames stayed on screen for exactly two refreshes; the 90 Hz notice appeared once; stopped with SIGTERM it quit cleanly. Also installed on a Steam Deck OLED.
- arm64: on a Steam Frame (SteamOS 0.3.0), outside the headset: races at 60 fps, split screen at 60 fps, Spanish menus with English movies and speech; FSR 1, Quit Game and SIGTERM worked.
- Mac: on a MacBook Pro (M1 Pro, macOS 27) and in a macOS 15 virtual machine (all 31 checks passed); the Language row shows on Mac, English unchanged.
- Updating from v0.1.8: each download installed over the published v0.1.8 kept the settings, saves and installed game, and showed What's new for v0.1.9.
- iPhone and iPad IPA: its contents and signing layout were checked as for v0.1.8; it hasn't been installed on a device from this file.

- A Brightness slider moved before v0.1.4: if you moved the game's own slider in an earlier
version (where it did nothing) and the game has saved since, v0.1.4 and later use that setting
from the main menu on. At maximum the picture is much brighter and washed out, as on a 360 with that save.
In the pause menu > Options > Video, set the slider back to the middle, or press Y (Defaults) and
choose Yes. Settings > Display > Brightness doesn't undo it. - Steam Deck OLED: set the refresh rate to 60 Hz (Quick Access > Performance); with Steam's
per-game profile on, it stays at 60 Hz for this game. At 90 Hz the game stutters, and a note says
so once. Leave the Framerate Limit off. The Steam Deck LCD hasn't been tested yet. - 120, 180 and 240 Hz screens were tested on simulated displays, not yet on a real panel, and
not in Game Mode on a TV. 90, 144 and 165 Hz can't show 60 fps evenly: use 60 or 120 Hz, or
variable refresh. - Game Mode on Steam Deck and Steam Machine:
- Browse for image... may not open in Game Mode. Use the image the installer found instead:
it is highlighted, so press A...

SpeedBreaker v0.1.9 Windows beta 1
SpeedBreaker v0.1.9 for Windows: beta
This is a beta. It's the same v0.1.9 as the Mac and SteamOS downloads (nine more languages,
Fill Screen in the screen's own shape, and everything before them), now for Windows, but so far
the Windows version has been tested on one laptop with Intel UHD Graphics. Please try it and
tell us how it runs, especially on the PCs we couldn't test.
Download
SpeedBreaker-0.1.9-windows-x64-beta.zip, below, with its .sha256 checksum file.
What's been tested, and what hasn't
Tested on a laptop with Intel UHD Graphics 620 (Core i5-10210U, Windows 11 25H2) and a 60 Hz
screen: installing from a disc image, racing, split screen with two controllers, FSR 1 upscaling,
fullscreen, Quit Game, the Controls page, Language: Spanish, and updating from an earlier test
build with saves and settings kept. On that laptop the game runs at about 26 fps in a race at
1x: an integrated GPU of 2019 is below what the game needs for 60.
Not tested yet:
- NVIDIA and AMD graphics cards.
- Desktop PCs in general, other Windows 10/11 versions, and real Xbox controllers on Windows.
Expect rough edges. If something's wrong on your PC, a bug report is the most useful thing you
can send.
What you need
- Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit.
- A CPU with AVX2: Intel Haswell (2013) or newer, or any AMD Ryzen. Without it the game says so
and closes. - A graphics card with Vulkan 1.2 and a current driver.
- Your own backup of your own USA (NTSC-U) Xbox 360 disc of Need for Speed: Most Wanted
(2005): an.iso, or the extracted disc files. No game files come with SpeedBreaker.
You can check the download first: put the.sha256file next to the zip and run

hash must match the file's.
It checks the
game and version, then copies and verifies every file (a few minutes). Then Start the game.
Saves, settings, logs and the installed game go in %LOCALAPPDATA%\SpeedBreaker. To update later,
extract the new zip into a new folder and run it from there: everything carries over. Check for
Updates isn't available on Windows yet; watch the Releases page. README.txt in the zip has

SpeedBreaker v0.1.8
What's new
- Two-player split screen (Quick Race > Split Screen): with two controllers, each player gets
their own half of the screen. The second controller joins at "Player 2 press START". If either
player's controller disconnects, the game pauses and says so until it's back (issue #28). - Smooth Motion (Settings > Display), on a Mac with a 120 Hz screen (ProMotion or a 120 Hz
monitor): up to 120 fps. The game still runs at 60 steps a second, as on the console, and draws
one more picture between each two. It's off by default and takes effect the next time the game
starts. When a scene is too heavy, it eases off, down to an even 60 for a few seconds. - USB steering wheels (experimental). A Logitech G29 steers, the pedals are the throttle and
the brake, the paddles shift gears, and the menus work from the wheel's buttons. Settings > Wheel
(shown while a wheel is plugged in) has the steering range, deadzone, response, force feedback
and Calibrate for other wheels. Tested with a G29 on a Mac; the steering feel is still being
tuned, so feedback from wheel owners is very welcome. Thanks to byteofmydream, who wrote it
(pull request #29).
Fixed
- Now and then in a race, especially on a busy Mac, the engine (or another sound) dropped to a
murmur until the next gear change. The game's own sound code took a moment where it didn't get to
run for a console overload and cut sounds; it no longer does. Thanks to Omega3komma3 for the
report and the video (issue #35). - The fade to black before some cutscenes and loads (such as the career prologue's last race)
now covers the whole screen, top and bottom, on screens taller than 16:9 (a MacBook, a Steam
Deck), instead of leaving the scene showing above and below it. - A preventive memory fix for Apple-silicon Macs, iPhones and iPads: handing memory back could
clear a little more than it should. It wasn't seen to happen in play.
More about it
- Split screen runs at 60 fps on a Mac and on a Steam Deck at its Auto resolution; at higher
Internal Resolutions it can drop below. - Smooth Motion isn't on SteamOS, Linux or iPhone and iPad yet. Internal Resolution's Auto picks
for two pictures a step (1x on an M1 Pro); the controls answer a few milliseconds later. - Wheels: other wheels than the G29 are used as best the game can work them out; Calibrate teaches
it yours. Force feedback works on a Mac through SDL's own Logitech driver (the G29 in its PS3
position, G27, G25, Driving Force GT and Pro; not a G29 in its PS4 position, a G920 or a G923).
On SteamOS and Linux the wheel should steer as on a Mac; force feedback there isn't tested yet. - The log now says when the game's sound code would have dropped sounds, at most once a minute.

iPhone and iPad: the experimental IPA
SpeedBreaker-0.1.8-ios.ipa is signed by nobody: a sideloading tool such as AltStore signs it
with your own Apple Account and installs it. The IPA itself hasn't been installed on a device
yet: the iPhones and iPad it was tested on ran the same app built and signed with Xcode. Please

How these downloads were tested
Each download attached here was tested before release. It was unpacked or opened as the setup
steps say, with a fresh home folder, and the game was installed through the installer from a disc
image:
- x86-64: on a Steam Machine (SteamOS 3.8). The game raced at 60 fps, with the default upscaling and with FSR 1, and two-player split screen raced at 60 fps at 3440x1440. On a simulated 120 Hz display (nested gamescope), 99.99% of frames stayed on screen for exactly two refreshes; on a simulated 90 Hz display the refresh-rate notice appeared once and not again; at 60 Hz pacing was unchanged. Stopped with SIGTERM, it quit cleanly and kept its settings.
- arm64: on a Steam Frame (SteamOS 0.3.0), outside the headset. The game raced at 58.6 fps, as v0.1.7 did, and split screen at 60 fps; FSR 1, the Controls page, Quit Game, SIGTERM and Check for Updates worked.
- Mac: on a MacBook Pro (M1 Pro, macOS 27), at a median 60 fps in a race and with Smooth Motion on the ProMotion screen, and in a macOS 15 virtual machine, where it passed all 31 checks.
- Updating from v0.1.7: each download installed over the published v0.1.7 kept the settings, saves and installed game, and showed What's new for v0.1.8.
- iPhone and iPad IPA: its contents and signing layout were checked as for v0.1.7; it hasn't been installed on a device from this file.
