SpeedBreaker v0.1.1
What's new
- The Steam Deck and 16:10 Macs fill the screen: a slightly taller view, with the HUD kept at
16:9. Settings > Display > Aspect Ratio > 16:9 brings the bars back. - Sunlit roads and correct shadows. A bug in the shadow map left every road in shade, on every
device: the roads are now as bright as on the Xbox 360, and the line between shade and sun that
followed the car is gone (GitHub issue #3). Thanks to the Reddit tester who spotted it. - Cutscene bars: the police video camera in the career intro, and the intro's black frames, now
cover the whole screen on taller and wider screens. - macOS 15 Sequoia support: the Mac app runs on macOS 15 or later (v0.1.0 needed macOS 26). On
macOS 26 it runs exactly as before. - Linux startup crash fixes: no crash at startup on graphics cards without Resizable BAR (NVIDIA),
and none expected on Intel's Linux driver (GitHub issue #2). - Choose a folder... in the installer: put the game in any folder you like (GitHub issue #1).
- Check for Updates, in Settings > Advanced.
- A cleaner Linux folder: speedbreaker.sh is the only thing at the top to run, and the program
moved into lib/.
How to update
- Mac: drag the new SpeedBreaker into Applications and choose Replace, then allow it once more with Open Anyway (System Settings > Privacy & Security).
- Steam Deck, Steam Machine, Steam Frame and Linux: unpack the new download over the old folder (
~/Games/SpeedBreaker). Your Steam shortcut keeps working. - Everywhere: your saves, settings and the installed game are kept, and no disc image is needed.
More about it
- Choose a folder... is on the installer's last page. An empty folder is used as it is; one that
already holds files gets a new SpeedBreaker Game folder inside. The game remembers the folder,
and says so if its drive isn't connected. On SteamOS the folder picker opens only in Desktop
Mode: in Game Mode, switch to Desktop Mode and choose the folder there, or run
speedbreaker.sh --install <image> --dest <folder>from Konsole in Desktop Mode (or over SSH). - Check for Updates asks GitHub whether a newer SpeedBreaker is out. If one is, it shows what
changed, opens the download page, and shows that page as a QR code to scan with a phone (for
Steam Deck Game Mode and the Steam Frame, where no browser may open). Nothing is checked online
unless you press Check for Updates. GitHub's Watch > Custom > Releases tells you too. - Steam Deck, Steam Machine, Steam Frame and Linux: always start the game with speedbreaker.sh, as
your Steam shortcut does. The program in lib/ can't pick its libraries on its own. Unpacked over
v0.1.0, the first start removes v0.1.0's program from the top of the folder.

Which file is for my device?
| Device | Download | Setup |
|---|---|---|
| Steam Deck, Steam Machine and Linux PCs (x86-64) | SpeedBreaker-steamos-x86_64.tar.xz |
Steam Deck and Steam Machine, Linux |
| Steam Frame (arm64) | SpeedBreaker-steamos-arm64.tar.xz |
Steam Frame |
| Mac with Apple silicon, macOS 15 or later | SpeedBreaker-macos.dmg |
Mac |
| iPhone and iPad | No download: you build it yourself with Xcode | iPhone and iPad |
| Windows and Android | Coming soon |
The two SteamOS files are not interchangeable: the arm64 one is for the Steam Frame only, and the
x86-64 one doesn't run on the Frame. Each download has a .sha256 file next to it (see Checksums
below).
All three downloads are built from this release's source, commit 05838d6. The first line of
the game's log, and Settings > Advanced, say SpeedBreaker v0.1.1 (05838d6).
The Source code archives that GitHub adds hold SpeedBreaker's own source, with no game code or
data. Building from them needs your own disc; see
Building from source.
How these downloads were tested
Each download attached here was tested before release. It was unpacked or opened as the setup
steps say, with a fresh home folder, and the game was installed through the installer from a disc
image:
- x86-64: on a Steam Deck OLED (SteamOS 3.9.2) and a Steam Machine (SteamOS 3.8). The game
then started from the new install and reached a race, with sunlit roads. On the Deck the picture
filled the whole screen, and the police video camera's bars covered it edge to edge. - arm64: on a Steam Frame (SteamOS 0.3.0), outside the headset. The game then started from
the new install and reached a race, with sunlit roads. - Mac: on a MacBook Pro (M1 Pro, macOS 26.5.1). The game then played its intro and reached
the first race. On macOS 15.6.1 (Sequoia), in a virtual machine on a Mac Studio, it installed
with the keyboard and mouse and raced in full screen. - Updating from v0.1.0: on the Steam Deck, the Steam Machine, the Steam Frame and the Mac,
v0.1.1 went over a working v0.1.0 the way "How to update" says. The game used the existing
install without reinstalling it and showed What's new once; on the Mac, a setting changed in
v0.1.0 was kept. - Check for Updates reached GitHub and answered correctly on the Mac, in the macOS 15 virtual
machine and on the Steam Frame.

Each file has its .sha256 next to it on this page. Download both into the same folder, then
run sha256sum -c SpeedBreaker-steamos-x86_64.tar.xz.sha256 on SteamOS or Linux, or

say OK.
Known issues and limits
- Mac, the first time you open it: the app isn't notarized by Apple, so macOS refuses to
open it and offers Done or Move to Trash. Click Done. Then go to System Settings >
Privacy & Security, scroll down to the message that SpeedBreaker was blocked, click Open
Anyway, and confirm with Open Anyway and your password (or Touch ID). After that it opens
normally.- The Open Anyway button only stays there for about an hour after the refusal. If it's gone,
open the app again. - You do this once per download, so once more after each update. Control-click > Open no
longer skips it. - The app isn't damaged. If macOS ever says it is, check the download against its
.sha256and
download it again. - Apple silicon only, macOS 15 or later.
- The Open Anyway button only stays there for about an hour after the refusal. If it's gone,
- macOS 15 Sequoia was tested in a virtual machine, not yet on a real Mac. If you play on
macOS 15, a short report in the issues, working or not, with your Mac's model, would help a lot. - Steam Deck OLED: set the refresh rate to 60 Hz (Quick Access > Performance). At 90 Hz
the game stutters. Leave the Framerate Limit off. The Steam Deck LCD hasn't been tested yet. - Game Mode on Steam Deck and Steam Machine:
- Browse for image... may not open in Game Mode. Use the image the installer found instead:
it is highlighted, so press A, then A again on Install. If it found more than one
(for example one in Downloads and one on the SD card), pick yours with Up and Down first. - Choose a folder... opens its folder picker only in Desktop Mode. Pick the folder there, or
run~/Games/SpeedBreaker/speedbreaker.sh --install <image> --dest <folder>from Konsole. Use
a folder on the internal storage or on a card formatted by SteamOS, or Game Mode won't find
the game. - Game Mode only sees SD cards and USB drives formatted by SteamOS. For others, copy the image
into Downloads from Desktop Mode. - The install takes about two minutes on a Steam Deck, and under a minute on a Steam Machine.
- Docked, or on a Steam Machine, set the shortcut's Game Resolution to Native.
- Browse for image... may not open in Game Mode. Use the image the installer found instead:
- Steam Frame: it plays as a big flat screen in the headset; it is not a VR mode. Set Display >
Frame Rate to 30 fps for smooth play (the headset's compositor shares the graphics chip; the
game keeps its full speed). The Frame's file manager can't unpack the download: use the Konsole
command in the setup steps. Add to Steam from the file manager and the installer driven by the
Frame's controllers haven't been walked through in the headset yet, so if a step looks different
on your Frame, please open an issue. - Linux:
- Always start it with
speedbreaker.sh. Started on its own, the program inlib/fails on
most systems with a message such asGLIBC_2.44 not found. - The x86-64 download has only been tested on SteamOS. The startup crash fixes for cards
without Resizable BAR and for Intel's driver (issue #2) were tested on SteamOS by making the
game face the same memory limits; they haven't run on an NVIDIA or Intel GPU yet. Whether
v0.1.1 starts for you or not, a note in issue #2 helps. - Choose a folder... needs a file chooser portal or zenity; without one, install with
--dest. - It needs a CPU w...

SpeedBreaker v0.1.0
The first public release of SpeedBreaker: an unofficial static recompilation of the Xbox 360
version of Need for Speed: Most Wanted (2005). A native port, not an emulator, for Steam Deck,
Steam Machine, Steam Frame, Linux and Mac.
No game files are included. You need a backup (a disc image) of your own USA (NTSC-U) Xbox
360 disc. The installer checks every file and installs the game. SpeedBreaker is a fan project
by project(u), not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by Electronic Arts Inc., the Need for
Speed brand or Valve Corporation.

What you get
- Up to 4K: the 3D scene renders at 1x, 2x or 3x the console's 720p, and Auto picks one for your
screen and device. - Ultrawide screens get a wider view instead of a stretched one, and 4:3 and 3:2 screens a taller
one, with the HUD and the rear-view mirror where they belong. - Up to 60 fps on a 60 Hz display, a steady 30 at full game speed, or Auto, which drops to 30 only
while the device is hot or can't hold 60. - The original look: the low sun's glare, correct colours on Apple devices, proper car paint and
mirror reflections, and distant textures that don't shimmer. - A guided installer: it finds your disc image, checks that it's the right game and verifies all
49 files as it copies them. - Controllers work as an Xbox 360 pad, with hot-plugging and rumble. The keyboard works too.
- A settings menu that pauses the game: F1, Back + Start (View + Menu on the Steam Deck and Steam
Frame), or a three-finger tap on iPhone and iPad. Every change applies at once. - Settings > Advanced > Save Bug Report puts the logs, your settings and a screenshot in one zip
file. Nothing is uploaded: you decide what to send. - From this version on, the first start after an update shows what changed, once. Nothing is
checked online.

Frame's controllers haven't been walked through in the headset yet, so if a step looks different
on your Frame, please open an issue. - Linux: the x86-64 download has only been tested on SteamOS. Other distributions and NVIDIA
or Intel graphics are untested; reports are welcome. It needs a CPU with AVX2 (Intel Haswell,
AMD Excavator or Zen, or newer) and Vulkan 1.2 graphics. - Game versions: only the USA (NTSC-U) Xbox 360 disc is supported. PAL and Japanese discs,
re-releases, Games on Demand packages and the PC version aren't, and no title update is used. - Not in this release: importing Xbox 360 saves, button remapping, mouse control in the game,
more than 60 fps (the game's own cap), and Windows and Android builds. - iPhone and iPad: there's no download. You build it with Xcode and sign it with your own Apple
developer account: scripts/ios/README.md
walks you through it.
Reporting a bug
- Open the settings (F1; Back + Start on a controller; on a Steam Deck hold View and press Menu;
on a Steam Frame press Menu + View; a three-finger tap on iPhone and iPad), go to
Advanced and choose Save Bug Report. - A notice says where the zip file went: usually your Desktop (on SteamOS, pick it up in Desktop
Mode, or in the Desktop app on a Steam Frame), or the SpeedBreaker folder in the Files app on
iPhone and iPad. Its name says which version you're running, for example
speedbreaker-bug-report-v0.1.0-<date>_<time>.zip. Nothing is uploaded. - Check the open issues first. Then
open a new issue, attach the zip, and say which device and download you use, what you were
doing, what you expected, what happened, and roughly how long into the session it happened.
If the game crashed, start it again and save a report: the crash report is included.
Never attach game files or disc images to an issue.
