General description

MarketScan Research Databases is a group of longitudinal databases of privately and publicly insured, de-identified patient data in the United States. These data reflect the real world of treatment patterns and costs by tracking millions of patients even as they switch health plans.

These individual-level healthcare claims data include carve-out services, clinical utilization, expenditures, insurance enrollment/plan benefit for inpatient, outpatient, and prescription drugs for a large population of individuals and their dependents with employer-provided commercial insurance in the United States.

Variable categories

  • Standard demographic variables - patient age, gender, and race.
  • Inpatient data.
  • Outpatient services and prescription drug claims.
  • Information about long-term care and other medical care.
  • Data on eligibility (by month).
  • Service and provider types are also included.

Limitations

  • MarketScan databases are based on a large convenience sample. The sample is not random and may contain biases or fail to generalize well to other populations.
  • Data come primarily from large employers. So, although this database includes a large amount of data contributed from health plans, small and medium firms may be underrepresented.
  • Accessing the data requires data management software or programmer support.
