Start Concurrent Status

We are still in the "automated conversion phase"--converting from LaTeX to AsciiDoc using a messy, complicated set of scripts. Once we reach a stage where the bulk of the easy-to-reasonable automated conversions are done, we can begin editing the (AsciiDoc) text by hand, both to fix remaining conversion issues as well as to add new content.

These are the things that still aren't right with the current conversion scripts (these items could be converted to "Issues"). Note that Chapter 1 was converted by hand and is generally cleaner than the remaining chapters. Some of these issues are probably too messy to script and will need to be done by hand; others might just be omitted altogether.

  1. The book is all one HTML file. Needs to be chunked by chapter.
  2. The \index commands in the LaTeX source are not being converted.
  3. Examples are now simply preceded and followed by Begin Example/End Example text (rather than the fancier termination symbol in the original).
  4. Figure and Section cross references don't work, although Chapter cross references do. Could be a problem with the \label conversion.
  5. References to URLs in the text do not need to be expanded (since they can just be clicked on) and, besides, long URLs mess with line breaks.
  6. Some fixed-width text does not convert correctly--text with "_" retain the backslash.
  7. Tables need column width adjustments.
  8. Figures need scaling adjustments.
  9. Cross references to programs don't work.
  10. Called out lines in program text need to be redone using the AsciiDoc callout feature.
  11. Incorrect formatting at "The asterisk".
  12. The formatting of fixed-width text could look better.
