What's new in v0.4.2
Android: crash reports you can send straight from your phone. If the game crashes or stops with an error, open it again: it shows "Sonic Riders stopped last time", saves a report to your phone's Download/SonicRiders folder, and offers Share report (email, Discord, Drive...). Please attach that file to your bug report. It holds the game's log and your phone model, nothing personal.
- If Sonic Riders closes right away on your phone, this report says why (for example, the disc image didn't reach the phone).
- Also includes the Android setup message from the refreshed v0.4.1 zip: when no phone is found or USB debugging isn't allowed yet, the setup says so (#14).
- PC and Switch: no changes since v0.4.1.
⚠️ Known Android bug
The game can crash while you record the screen (and, rarely, when the phone gets very warm). The phone's graphics driver resets the game and it closes. Just reopen it, and avoid screen recording for now. A fix is being worked on.
You need
- Your own Sonic Riders (USA) disc image:
GXEE8P, revision 0, a clean full.iso(1,459,978,240 bytes). The setup checks it. You can dump your disc with a Wii and CleanRip. Convert RVZ/GCZ/CISO images back to a full ISO first (Dolphin: right-click the game → Convert File → ISO). - A Windows 10 (1803+) or 11 PC, 64-bit, with internet the first time. Nothing else to install: the setup downloads its own build tools.
- PC version: a graphics card with OpenGL 3.3. A controller is recommended.
- Switch version: custom firmware (Atmosphère) with the Homebrew Menu, about 2 GB free on the SD card. Stock clocks give a steady 30 fps; a steady 60 needs an overclock.
- Android version: a 64-bit phone with Android 11 or newer, about 2 GB free on the phone, a USB cable, and about 8 GB free on the PC for the Android build tools.
Install on Android
- On the phone, turn on USB debugging (once): Settings → About phone → Software information → tap Build number 7 times. Then Settings → Developer options → USB debugging: on.
- Download the Android zip and extract all of it to a folder like
C:\SonicRiders(only English letters in the path). - Connect the phone with a USB cable and unlock it. If it asks, choose File transfer.
- Double-click
Install Sonic Riders (Android).bat(if Windows warns: More info → Run anyway). Accept the Android SDK License, pick your disc image, and say y to install. When the phone asks "Allow USB debugging?", tap Allow. - Wait 20–40 minutes the first time (it downloads about 1.1 GB of Android build tools). The setup installs the app and copies your disc image to the phone.
- Start Sonic Riders from the phone's app list.
Controls: touch controls on screen. The left half is the stick; JUMP, BOOST, DRIFT and TORNADO are on the right; START is top right, and the top-left button opens the settings menu. Any Bluetooth or USB controller works too, and two controllers give 2-player split screen.
Saves live inside the app. Uninstalling the app deletes them. To update, run the new version's installer on the same PC; it installs over the old app and keeps your saves.
Install on PC
- Download the PC zip and extract all of it to a folder you'll keep (e.g.
C:\Games\SonicRiders; only English letters in the path). Your saves live there. - Double-click
Install Sonic Riders (PC).bat. If Windows warns, click More info → Run anyway. Then pick your disc image. - Wait 10–30 minutes the first time. It ends with Done.
- Start the game with the Sonic Riders shortcut.
Install on Switch
- Download the Switch zip and extract all of it to a folder like
C:\SonicRiders. - Put your Switch's SD card in the PC.
- Double-click
Install Sonic Riders (Switch).bat, then pick your disc image and your SD card. Say y to copy the disc image to the card (first time only). - Wait 10–30 minutes the first time, then eject the SD card safely.
- On the Switch, hold R while starting any game to open the Homebrew Menu, then start Sonic Riders.
Updating from an older version: download the new zip, extract it to a new folder and run its installer again with the same disc image (and SD card / phone). Full guide with troubleshooting: docs/INSTALL.md.
Known issues
- Android: crashes while screen recording (see above).
- Switch: at stock clocks the busiest race scenes run at 30 fps, not 60 (#1); with an overclock, the busiest moments of 3–4 player races still dip below 60 fps (#2).
- The speed blur is weaker than on GameCube (#3); the story cutscene monitor is garbled (#4); there's no lens flare (#7).
- A rare hang on "Now Loading" (#6).
Found a bug?
Android: reopen the game after a crash and tap Share report (or attach the file from Download/SonicRiders). Open a bug report with your log: setup.log if the installer fails; on the Switch, sonicriders.log from switch/sonicriders/; on PC, sonicriders.log in the install folder; on Android, sonicriders.log in Android/data/net.srnative.sonicriders/files/ on the phone.

v0.4.1: setup fixes (Android download works again)

What's new in v0.4.1
Fixes the setup; the game itself is unchanged from v0.4.0. If v0.4.0's setup failed for you, download v0.4.1 and run it again (finished downloads are reused).
- Android: the setup from the v0.4.0 download failed at the very last step ("unrecognized arguments") for everyone. Fixed.
- Android: an Android-only setup on a PC that never built the PC or Switch version stopped at "Dear ImGui not found". Fixed.
- Android: a first build could fail with "unable to find library -lSDL2" (issue #13). Fixed.
- Fresh Windows PCs: the "Analysing the game code" step failed because a Visual C++ runtime DLL was missing. The setup now brings its own copy.
- Downloads continue after a dropped connection (up to 5 tries, resuming) instead of stopping the setup.
- The Android setup no longer leaves a background
adb.exerunning. - Every release is now tested by a clean install in Windows Sandbox (a fresh Windows with nothing installed), PC and Android.

What's new in v0.3.4
- Setup: works when your Windows user name has accents or other non-English letters (Turkish, Spanish, French names and so on). Before, every build step failed with "CreateProcess failed: The system cannot find the file specified". The setup now keeps its build tools in
C:\SonicRidersToolsin that case. Extract the zip to a simple folder likeC:\SonicRiders(not your Downloads folder); the setup tells you if the folder needs moving. - Also new since v0.3.2 (in v0.3.3): Switch characters are no longer tinted blue/teal (#11).

What's new in v0.3.3
- Switch: characters are no longer tinted blue/teal (#11). On the Switch, lit 3D characters lost most of their red: white gloves and shoes looked cyan and skin looked olive, in the menus and in every race, day and night. The Switch's shader compiler mishandled the lighting code; it's now restructured, and characters match the GameCube again (checked on hardware against the original game).

What's new in v0.3.2
- Switch: fixed a big slowdown after the first few minutes. After some races the game leaves a rarely used colour setting switched on, and the port then stopped using its fast shaders for everything: menus and races ran several times slower on the GPU (about 20 fps at stock clocks) until you restarted. Now the fast shaders keep working for the whole session (confirmed on hardware). This also makes the 60 fps setting much better in long sessions.
- Switch: the translated game code is a little leaner (cheaper function calls and memory accesses, 7% smaller).

v0.3.1: Switch playable at stock clocks (steady 30 fps), smoother 60 fps setting

What's new in v0.3.1
- Switch: playable without an overclock. At stock clocks, races now hold a steady 30 fps (tested on hardware in handheld mode, busiest views included). The GPU's work per race frame dropped by about a quarter, and the work of turning the game's drawing commands into GPU work is now shared with a CPU core that was sitting idle.
- The 60 fps setting no longer slows the game down. It shows 60 fps while the console keeps up and switches to a steady 30 fps at full speed in scenes too busy for 60, then back to 60. On a Switch at stock clocks that means 60 in lighter parts of a race and 30 in the busiest ones (this new behaviour hasn't been tried on hardware yet; it was tested on PC and in an emulator).
- New settings menu (hold Minus on Switch, F1 on PC) in Sonic colours, with tabs switched with L / R.
- Switch: no Quit Game button (close the game from HOME); no more hitches when moving the menu cursor; the FPS counter costs less.

v0.2.4: faster Switch multiplayer, sleep mode, PC stick fix

What's new in v0.2.4
- Switch: faster multiplayer. The game's audio is now mixed on its own CPU core, as the GameCube's audio chip did; it was taking about 2 ms of every frame from the game. In 3-player Metal City the busiest parts went from about 37 to around 50 fps, and the rest runs at 60. 4-player races haven't been measured yet.
- Switch: sleep mode works. Putting the console to sleep during the game used to leave it frozen after waking; it now carries on right where you left it.
- PC: controller sticks are no longer touchy in menus. A light touch on an Xbox-style stick used to race the cursor through menus. The stick now ignores small movements and ramps up smoothly; a full push still steers fully.
- PC: the settings menu no longer has the "Controllers" row (it only did something on the Switch).

GXEE8P, revision 0, a clean full.iso(1,459,978,240 bytes). The setup checks it. You can dump your disc with a Wii and CleanRip. Convert RVZ/GCZ/CISO back to ISO with Dolphin first. - A Windows 10 (1803+) or 11 PC, 64-bit, with internet the first time and about 4 GB free. Nothing else to install: the setup downloads its own build tools.
- PC version: a graphics card with OpenGL 3.3. A controller is recommended.
- Switch version: custom firmware (Atmosphère) with the Homebrew Menu, about 2 GB free on the SD card, and an overclock: tested at CPU 1785 / GPU 1152 / memory 2133 MHz. At stock clocks it runs poorly.
Install on PC
- Download the PC zip and extract all of it to a folder you'll keep (e.g.
C:\Games\SonicRiders). Your saves live there. - Double-click
Install Sonic Riders (PC).bat. If Windows warns, click More info → Run anyway. Then pick your disc image. - Wait 10–30 minutes the first time. It ends with Done.
- Start the game with the Sonic Riders shortcut (in the folder, and on your desktop if you said yes).
Controls: an Xbox-style controller works out of the box. Keyboard: WASD = move, J / K / L / I = A / B / X / Y, Enter = START, U / O / P = L / R / Z, arrow keys = C-stick, hold F1 = settings, F11 = fullscreen.
Install on Switch
- Download the Switch zip and extract all of it.
Updating from an older version: download the new zip, extract it to a new folder and run its installer again with the same disc image (and SD card). Your Switch saves stay on the SD card; on PC, copy the old folder's saves folder into the new one.
Known issues
- Switch: the busiest moments of multiplayer races still dip below 60 fps (#2); stock clocks are slow (#1).
- Characters look flatter and have a blue tint compared to GameCube (#11); the speed blur is weaker (#3); the story cutscene monitor is garbled (#4); there's no lens flare (#7).
- A rare hang on "Now Loading" (#6).

v0.2.3: game controllers work on PC
Play Sonic Riders natively, with no emulator, on a modded Nintendo Switch or on your Windows PC. Both are built on your PC from your own copy of the game; these downloads contain no game files.

What's new in v0.2.3
- PC: game controllers work now. In earlier versions a controller was detected but its buttons and sticks did nothing (only the keyboard worked). Xbox-style controllers now work in menus and races, analog triggers included.
- PC: the game has an icon (Sonic, from the game's own save icon), made from your disc during setup.
- The settings menu opens when you hold F1 (or the controller's Back/View button) for half a second.
Also in v0.2.2: the installer no longer fails with Can't initialize filter; unable to run program "xz -d -qq" on some PCs, and needs no other programs installed.

v0.2.2: setup fix for the "xz -d -qq" error

What's new in v0.2.2
- Setup fix: on some PCs the installer stopped with
Error opening archive: Can't initialize filter; unable to run program "xz -d -qq". It used Windows' built-intarto unpack its build tools, and on many Windows versions thattarcan't open those archives by itself. The installer now unpacks everything itself and needs no other programs. If you hit this error, download v0.2.2 and run its installer. - The installer no longer stops without a message if another program (for example an antivirus scan) briefly holds its log file open.
- The README now lists the requirements at the top.
The game itself is unchanged from v0.2.1.
