Roneyview v0.8.31

Choose a tag to compare

@tengkoru tengkoru released this 24 Oct 21:08

What's new?

  • Pressing Esc now closes the Print window. If a layout or paper dropdown is open, Esc closes the dropdown first and a second Esc closes the window. If the Save PDF dialog is open, Esc does not close the Print window — it works normally again after you cancel that dialog. While a PDF is being made, Esc closes the window but the PDF still finishes writing. In fullscreen mode, Esc with Print open closes Print only, without exiting fullscreen.
  • The navigation bar no longer swallows the Print window's Close button. Previously, hovering could raise the bar over the button row and a click on Close would do nothing (and could even change the picture). Now Close works on the first click.
  • Theme selection can now be scrolled, both in the File menu's Theme submenu and in the Settings theme grid — useful on shorter screens where the bottom themes were previously cut off. The Settings dialog itself is still not resizable.
  • The About dialog can now be closed with the Esc key. Previously it ignored Esc entirely — the only ways to close it were the OK button and the window button.
  • Pressing Esc while the About dialog is open over an edit session now closes the About dialog only. Previously, Esc would discard the edit session while leaving About on screen.
  • Six new built-in themes, bringing the total from 4 to 10: Kertas (warm light paper tones), Senja (dark purple-orange dusk), Terminal (green-on-black terminal style), High Contrast (black and white with yellow accents), Sakura (soft pink pastels), and Samudra (dark teal sea). Pick them from Settings → Theme; every part of the interface follows the theme you choose, just like the existing four.
  • The bottom row of theme cards in Settings can now be clicked reliably on the first try — previously, the navigation bar could overlap the dialog and swallow clicks, which made Sakura especially hard to select. The navigation bar still behaves as before once the dialog is closed.
  • Ctrl+Q now quits the application even while an edit panel (such as Tone) is open. Previously it did nothing during editing, even though quitting from the menu or the window button already worked. No new confirmation dialog has been added.
  • Settings can now be opened with Ctrl+, while you are editing an image. Previously the shortcut did nothing during an edit session, even though Settings could be opened from the menu.
  • The thumbnail strip and file count now update right after you save — including after Batch Convert — instead of only after restarting the application. Saving to a different folder or inside an archive is unchanged.
  • Thumbnails of very large images now appear instead of staying grey boxes, without weakening the memory protection for the main view: oversized images are still refused with a clear message there.
  • Your chosen theme now colors the whole interface. Buttons, sliders, scrollbars, checkboxes, and other controls that previously kept the app's default look now follow the theme you picked, in all four themes.
  • Controls in the right-hand edit panel are now clearly visible against the panel background in every theme — previously, in some themes, buttons and sliders almost blended into the background.

@tengkoru tengkoru released this 23 Oct 22:16

What's new?

  • The scale (zoom percentage) figure in the status bar is now stable from the moment an image first appears — it no longer flickers briefly when opening a photo or when moving quickly between pages.
  • In edit mode (Crop/Rotate), the status bar now shows the actual scale of the image being edited, instead of the normal view's scale.
  • The scale figure in the status bar is now correct from the first displayed image. Previously, while a photo preview or a GIF's first frame was showing, it could briefly read 100% before correcting itself.
  • The Settings dialog can now be closed with the Esc key. In fullscreen mode, Esc now closes the dialog first; pressing Esc again exits fullscreen as usual.

Roneyview v0.8.24

@tengkoru tengkoru released this 23 Oct 11:54

What's new?

  • The edit panel is no longer clipped in the Neon theme. Several buttons and sliders that were previously cut off at the panel's right edge (such as "Reset tone" and "Cancel") now display in full at every panel width. Other themes are unchanged.
  • The "Reset" button in the edit panel now returns every control to its default value — including the Basic tone sliders and the free-rotation angle, which previously kept their old values even though the image itself had been reset.
  • A behind-the-scenes security fix in the component that handles password-protected archives. Updating is recommended if you often open password-protected ZIP/CBZ archives.
  • JPEG photos appear faster. Photos that store a small preview inside the file (most camera and phone photos) now show that preview first, then automatically replace it with the full sharp image once it has loaded — photos feel like they appear instantly instead of leaving you waiting at a blank screen.
  • Startup feels lighter. Roneyview now remembers the result of its image-resizing speed measurement for your machine, so the measurement is not repeated on every launch.
  • WebP images open faster (measured at around 1.8× on test files) with pixel-identical results. Animated WebP is unchanged.
  • PNG decoding now uses a new component under the hood; the resulting images are identical, and speed varies depending on the file's contents.
  • The application is about 425 KB larger because of the new WebP component.
  • The faster switching away from a still-loading large GIF (the 0.8.21 improvement) is kept.
  • Switching from a large, still-loading GIF to another file is now much faster. Previously a small file could wait 4–15 seconds behind the GIF loading; the image you asked for is now loaded first (measured: from many seconds down to under a second).

Roneyview v0.8.20

@tengkoru tengkoru released this 23 Oct 01:22

What's new?

  • GIF animations now load via streaming. The first frame appears almost immediately (±0.6–1.0 seconds for a 3840×2160, 63-frame GIF on our test machine, compared to 2.6–5.1 seconds in version 0.8.19), while the remaining frames stream in from the same decoding flow—without needing to re-decode from the beginning.
  • Two-phase frame indexing: When a GIF is opened, the headers for all frames are scanned first (taking approximately 3 milliseconds for 63 frames). This ensures the total number of frames is known from the start, so the count displayed in the status bar is always accurate.
  • Transparent animation status during loading: While frames are still streaming in, the status bar displays "loading frame X of N...". The term "truncated" now only appears if a frame genuinely fails to load.
  • GIF animations are no longer truncated by memory budget constraints. A 63-frame test GIF—which previously only stored 16 frames ("16/16 frames, truncated")—now plays back in its entirety (63/63 frames). Stored frames are managed via a sliding window combined with periodic checkpoints, all operating within the same memory budget (128 MB; 32 MB in memory-saver mode). Frames that fall out of the sliding window are reloaded from the nearest checkpoint as needed (e.g., when stepping through frames, jumping to a specific point, or looping).
  • Exporting and saving all frames are no longer limited by the memory budget: Both operations now perform a full sequential decode on a worker thread. For instance, exporting the test GIF now generates 63 PNG files (previously, it only produced 16). The resolution of the exported files matches the current display tier (1886×1061 for the test GIF), consistent with the previous export behavior, which only included frames currently held in memory.
  • Copying an animated image now captures the frame actually uploaded to the texture (i.e., the one currently visible on screen). This refines the fix introduced in version 0.8.18, which could previously capture frames from the internal storage list instead.
  • Tone previews no longer become stale when switching between Basic and Advanced modes; the recalculation now occurs the instant the mode changes. Previously, the "Compare" split-view would continue to display the results from the previous mode until a slider was adjusted.
  • The "Compare" mode is now accurate for images with a dimension exceeding 960 pixels: the right side of the split-view now displays the tone-adjusted result by mapping coordinates proportionally from the downscaled preview. Previously, this side would silently display the original image, resulting in an "original-vs-original" comparison. Behavior for images ≤960 pixels and for non-Compare modes remains unchanged; the preview calculation resolution has not been increased, ensuring that performance on slower devices is maintained.
  • Labels for Tone sliders in Advanced mode are no longer truncated in narrow windows—"Kompr. highlight" (ID) and "Compr. highlight" (EN) are now displayed in full. This was achieved by reducing the width of the Tone panel sliders from 110 to 80 pixels, without altering the terminology in either language.
  • The "Set as wallpaper" window now fully adheres to the UI language: 16 new i18n keys (wp_*) cover the Color/Style labels, the "Apply" button, and all mode and style options in both languages. The English (EN) values remain unchanged in meaning, and the persistence format remains untouched.
  • When saving edits, frames, or PDFs without specifying a file extension, the correct extension (.png or .pdf) is now automatically appended. Since the underlying GTK/rfd framework does not provide a native option for file extensions, the fix was implemented at the application layer across three specific save paths. Filenames that already include an extension remain unaltered, and the save path for archive pages remains unchanged.
  • Copying an animated image (GIF) now captures the frame currently displayed on the screen, rather than always defaulting to the first frame. (Previously, the copy process would re-decode the file, consistently resulting in the initial frame.)
  • Ctrl+C during an editing session now copies the working buffer—the image as it appears during the editing process (including unapplied crop selections and changes made after clicking "Apply"). Previously, when the Crop/Resize panel was open, Ctrl+C would do nothing, with no indication as to why. The "Copy image" menu option now also consistently copies the working buffer during editing. This does not affect text fields: pressing Ctrl+C while typing in a text field will still copy the text.
  • Edit panel positioning: the calculation for the image area width now uses the actual layout constant (a 36-pixel overhead), replacing the previous 12-pixel estimate—which had caused the panel to extend beyond the right edge of the window when the window was narrow. The edit panel now maintains a margin of ±25 pixels from the window edge (previously, panel buttons could end up as close as ±2 pixels from the edge).
  • The "New size" text in the Resize panel is no longer truncated when the panel is at its default width: the megapixel figure now appears on its own line below the pixel dimensions. (Investigation revealed that the original, combined text actually fit within the panel; the truncation was caused by the panel’s geometry overflowing when the window was narrow—splitting it into two lines avoids this issue.)

Roneyview v0.8.16

@tengkoru tengkoru released this 22 Oct 00:23

What's new?

  • The zip dependency has been updated from 8.6.0 to 9.0.5, addressing 3 security advisories (RUSTSEC-2026-0369, RUSTSEC-2026-0367, RUSTSEC-2026-0368). These advisories concerned extraction APIs that Roneyview never actually used; they are now resolved at the dependency level as well. A cargo audit of this release shows 0 vulnerabilities.
  • The "New size" text in the Resize panel now displays the actual dimensions resulting from the resize process; previously, it could be off by 1–2 pixels when using non-integer ratios (e.g., showing 602×376 when the actual output was 600×376).
  • The method for reading archive entry names has been adjusted to align with the zip 9 API; there is no change in behavior from the user's perspective.
  • The Resize panel now always bases its calculations on the current dimensions of the image being worked on: after cropping, rotating, or resetting, the width/height fields and percentage mode will reflect the dimensions resulting from those edits—preventing the image from unexpectedly reverting to its original file dimensions when "Apply resize" is clicked.
  • Frame navigation buttons and shortcuts now allow for page-turning in single-frame images (e.g., JPEG pages within a comic archive) instead of remaining unresponsive; for multi-frame animations, the frame-skipping behavior remains unchanged. Frame navigation buttons also remain active as long as additional pages are available.
  • Error messages for batch conversion/resizing now specify the actual cause (e.g., "Image too large…") rather than defaulting to "format not supported" for every type of failure.
  • The close button in the batch dialog is now labeled "Close" once the conversion process is complete (it remains labeled "Cancel" while the process is ongoing).
  • Context menus in the Indonesian-language UI are now fully localized into Indonesian—for instance, "Properties" and "Set as wallpaper..." (which previously appeared in English).
  • Extremely large images will no longer exhaust memory when generating thumbnails or performing batch conversions/resizing; both processes now adhere to the same size limits applied when opening standard images, and files that exceed these limits are flagged as failures rather than causing the application to run out of memory.
  • Opening archives (ZIP/RAR) containing an excessive number of entries (over 100,000) is now rejected with a clear error message, preventing the application from hanging.
  • RAR entries that exceed size limits upon extraction are now rejected, consistent with the protection already in place for ZIP files.
  • The Properties window no longer loads an entire file into memory just to display EXIF data for very large files.
