Background captures record more

A background capture, made by pasting URLs or by recapturing, now keeps more of what happened
while it loaded the page, and its signed manifest entry covers each part:

  • Network record: a WARC file of the requests and responses the browser reported while it
loaded the page, with counts of what the record lacks.
  • Connection details: the TLS details the browser reported for the page it saved, or the
    reason they are absent.
  • PDF: a PDF of the page, printed after the page is saved.
  • Scrolling and screenshot: whether the scroll that loads more content ran and how it ended,
and whether the screenshot was scaled down, cut short or trimmed.
  • Images: an image offered at several resolutions is saved as the one the page displayed.

When you capture a link from a stored page with Capture link, the new capture records which
capture held the link, and the viewer links back to it.

Upgrade together. These captures carry fields that 1.0.1-beta.24 and later can verify.
Version 1.0.1-beta.23 and earlier cannot read them, so every member of a Shared Case should be
on this version.

About this beta

What beta means here. One thing holds and everything else is rough. The one thing:
Birdbrain must not silently lose, corrupt, or mis-attest evidence. Screens, wording and
workflows are changing on purpose; that floor is not.

The installers are unsigned. On Windows, SmartScreen warns about an unrecognized app;
click More info, then Run anyway. Code signing lands at the first non-beta release.

If a capture turns out not to be what Birdbrain claimed, the advisory is a pinned issue on
thebristolsound/birdbrain plus a
patched release through the updater. That release reaches Windows and
AppImage installs in place. A .deb install updates only on Restart to update, so .deb
users have to look here.

The source is public. Birdbrain is open source under the MIT license and is built in
thebristolsound/birdbrain, which also
publishes these builds.

What to report

Open an issue in
thebristolsound/birdbrain.
Report a security vulnerability privately through its
Security tab, not in an issue.

Do not report: layout, spacing, visual design, wording, labels, or a general sense that it
feels dated. The UI is changing substantially and those decisions are made.

Do report:

  1. Evidence lost, mangled, or mis-described — anything that disappeared, came back different,
or is described by the app as something other than what it is.
  2. Sites that fail to capture, capture incompletely, or render wrong in the viewer, with the
URL where it can be shared.
  3. Workflow dead-ends, where you wanted to do something and there was no path. Awkward is not
    a dead-end.
  4. Whether the certification and verify output read as true to someone who would have to
defend them to a hostile reader.

Which file do I download?

You are on Download
Windows 10 / 11 Birdbrain-Setup-1.0.1-beta.25.exe
Ubuntu — preferred Birdbrain-1.0.1-beta.25.AppImage
Ubuntu — alternative birdbrain_1.0.1-beta.25_amd64.deb
macOS 13 or later, Apple Silicon — experimental Birdbrain-1.0.1-beta.25-arm64.dmg
macOS 13 or later, Intel — experimental Birdbrain-1.0.1-beta.25.dmg

The macOS files are on this page only if the experimental macOS build succeeded. A
failed macOS build does not stop the release, so check the file list below first.

On Ubuntu, the AppImage needs the execute bit and FUSE 2 before it will run:

chmod +x Birdbrain-1.0.1-beta.25.AppImage
sudo apt install libfuse2t64 # 22.04 and earlier: libfuse2
./Birdbrain-1.0.1-beta.25.AppImage

Ubuntu stopped installing FUSE 2 by default, and without it the app does not
start. If you would rather not install it, run the AppImage with
--appimage-extract-and-run instead.

The Chrome extension ships inside the app — do not download it separately.
After installing, use Open extension folder in the app and load that folder
in Chrome, so the extension always matches your app version. (The
birdbrain-extension.zip here is the same build, for developers only.)

SHA256SUMS.txt lists the SHA-256 of the Windows, Linux and extension files, of the
macOS files when this page has them, and of the bill of materials, taken from the
copies on this page. To check a download on Linux, put SHA256SUMS.txt in the
folder that holds it and run
sha256sum --check --ignore-missing SHA256SUMS.txt.

birdbrain-v1.0.1-beta.25.spdx.json is that bill of materials: GitHub's dependency list
for the Birdbrain source repository's main branch, in SPDX 2.3 JSON, exported
during this release's build.

Everything else on this page (latest*.yml, *.blockmap) is machinery for
the in-app updater. Ignore it.

macOS is experimental. The build is unsigned and not notarized, no machine
check launches it before it is published, and the app does not install updates on
macOS. macOS blocks the first launch, and may say the app is "damaged and can't be
opened": that is the download quarantine, not a corrupt file. After dragging
Birdbrain to Applications, clear the quarantine once:

xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Birdbrain.app

Already running Birdbrain? On Windows or Ubuntu you do not need this page.
Settings → Updates → Check for updates finds this version. If the download does not
start by itself, click Download. When it finishes, click Restart to update. On the
.deb, that last step asks for your system password. On macOS, download the new disk
image from this page and repeat the steps above instead. After updating, reload the
Birdbrain extension at chrome://extensions, because Chrome keeps the old copy loaded
until you do.

Platform notes, the extension load steps, and where advisories appear:

Shared Cases (early access)

You can now share a Case with other people who run Birdbrain. Sharing is early access, and
the Share button and the Members panel both say so. Every member keeps a full copy, no
server holds the Case, and each member's captures stay signed by their own installation. Open
a Case and click Share in the top bar to invite someone; the command palette and the Case
card's menu on the dashboard open the same screen, and a one-time card under the button points
it out. A teammate joins from Start New Case → Join a shared Case. Sharing is not available
on Intel Macs.

On the dashboard, each Case card says whether the Case is on this machine only or shared, and
what you are to it. An Older Cases list below the three cards lists your other Cases that are
not archived, each with the same menu.

Upgrade together. Every member of a Shared Case should install this version, and later
ones, at the same time. When a teammate's copy writes something an older version cannot read,
sync with that teammate pauses until the older copy is updated.

Sync connects through n0's public relays by default, and does not follow the Egress setting:
the relay and your teammates can see your network addresses.
Install and first capture
has the steps, and the threat model
says what checking a Shared Case proves and what it does not.
