@tilakp tilakp released this 11 Oct 18:02

New

  • A read-only maclink CLI that reads the same database, no running app needed: latest, get, search, capture. Install it from the source with Scripts/install-cli.sh.
  • Better repair for moved files: if a bookmark cannot follow a file, maclink searches Spotlight by name and size, then lets you pick the file or delete the link.
  • Signed with a stable certificate, so your Accessibility and Automation permissions stay after future updates. If you used 0.1.0, grant them once more.
  • MIT license.

Install

  1. Download maclink.dmg below. Open it and drag maclink to Applications.
  2. Open it once and close the warning (it is not notarized). Then open System Settings › Privacy & Security and click Open Anyway.
  3. Each integration asks for its permission the first time you use it.

Universal (Apple Silicon and Intel). Requires macOS 14 or later.

maclink v0.1.0

@tilakp tilakp released this 31 Aug 05:42

First packaged build of maclink.

Press a hotkey and whatever you are looking at becomes a durable, pasteable
maclink:// link: a file selected in Finder, an email open in Mail, the current
tab in Safari. Paste it into org-mode, a note, or a chat message. Click it later
and you are back at that exact item, in its original app.

What works

  • Global hotkeys, configurable. Default ⌃⌥⌘L to capture, ⌃⌥⌘K to search.
  • Capture from Finder, Mail, and Safari, plus an Accessibility fallback for
everything else. Document-based apps (TextEdit, Preview, Pages, Xcode) give a
    full file link for free.
  • Resolve back to the exact file (bookmark-based, so it survives renames and
    moves), email, or web page.
  • Search dropdown over everything captured, with copy buttons, a pin toggle,
    archive, and delete.
  • Local SQLite database. No cloud, no account.
  • Emacs org-mode integration with zero configuration.

Install

  1. Download maclink-0.1.0.dmg below.
  2. Open it and drag maclink into Applications.
  3. Right-click maclink.app → Open the first time, then confirm Open. The app
is signed ad-hoc but not notarized, so Gatekeeper asks once.
  4. maclink lives in the menu bar, not the Dock. Each integration asks for its
macOS permission the first time you use it.

Universal binary (Apple Silicon and Intel). Requires macOS 14 or later.

Known limits

Non-sandboxed by necessity: App Sandbox blocks the Apple Events and Accessibility
access the whole app depends on, so there is no App Store build. The
hardened-runtime build path and the search dropdown's pin feature are implemented
and structurally checked but have not been exercised live.
