Settings
This page lists every Screen Tools setting, its options and its default. Open Settings from the gear in the toolbar menu, the Settings tab in the app, or Extension options in the Screen Tools details at chrome://extensions. In Firefox, open it from Options on the Screen Tools page in about:addons, which opens Settings in a tab.
Settings take effect as soon as you change them, with no save button. Screen Tools stores them in the extension's localStorage, and every open Screen Tools page picks up a change straight away. Connections are the exception: they're kept in browser.storage.local. If a stored value is missing or invalid, Screen Tools uses the default. The definitions and defaults are in settings.ts, and the page is settings.tsx.
The top card checks camera and microphone access, which Screen Tools needs for camera recordings and microphone audio. Opening Settings asks the browser for both, then releases them straight away. The card shows one of these states, with a Video and an Audio badge for each device:
- Permission granted: both work.
- Permission partially granted: one works.
- Permission denied: you or the browser blocked access.
- Error getting media stream: something else failed, with the browser's message.
When access isn't fully granted, Try again checks again. In the recorder window, Fix in new tab opens Settings in a normal tab, because the browser doesn't always show permission prompts in popup windows. The device lists below only show names once access is granted.
| Setting | Options | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Screen resolution | Native (full size), 4K (2160p), 1440p QHD, 1080p Full HD, 720p HD, 480p SD | Native |
| Preferred camera | System default, or any camera the browser can see | System default |
| Camera resolution | 1080p Full HD, 720p HD, 480p SD, 360p, 240p | 1080p |
| Output format | MP4, WebM | MP4 |
| Frame rate | 15, 24, 30 or 60 fps | 30 fps |
| Show save options | On, off | On |
| Optimize video (make seekable) | On, off | On |
- Screen resolution caps the size of the screen capture. The browser scales the source down to fit, keeping its shape. Native is the screen at full pixel density, up to 3840×2160. The recorder window has the same select.
- Camera resolution is the size Screen Tools asks the camera for. A camera that can't match it gets as close as it can. In Camera mode, it sets the recording's resolution.
- Output format shows "MP4 (not supported)" and records WebM where the browser can't record MP4. The recorder window has the same select.
- Show save options opens the save dialog when you save a video, with a file name, a destination (this computer or a connection) and a choice of the original or a smaller copy. Off saves the original to your downloads folder straight away with a dated name, or the name you saved it under last time, so it never uploads. See Recording.
- Optimize video writes the duration into WebM recordings when they stop, so players can seek them. It has no effect on MP4. Turn it off if stopping a long WebM recording is slow.
These settings apply to Screen + camera recordings. A preview next to them shows where the camera sits on a 16:9 frame.
| Setting | Options | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Position | Top left, top right, bottom left, bottom right | Bottom right |
| Size | Small, medium, large | Small |
| Shape | Squircle, default (rectangle), circle | Squircle |
| Zoom | 1.0× to 2.0× in steps of 0.1 | 1.0× |
| Mirror camera image | On, off | On |
Mirror also applies to Camera recordings. Recording gives the overlay's sizes.
| Setting | Options | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Preferred microphone | System default, or any microphone the browser can see | System default |
| Setting | Options | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Quality | Native (full resolution), High (up to 2560 px wide), Medium (up to 1920 px wide), Small (up to 1280 px wide) | Native |
| Download format | PNG, JPG | PNG |
Quality applies when Screen Tools takes a screenshot, so changing it doesn't resize screenshots you already have. Download format is the same setting as the format select in the screenshot editor. See Screenshots.
Connect accounts and add upload servers here, so the save dialog and the screenshot editor can upload to them. Files only leave your computer when you upload them. See Uploading for how uploads and share links work.
| Destination | Where uploads go |
|---|---|
| Google Drive | A Screen Tools folder in your Drive |
| Dropbox |
Apps/Screen Tools in your Dropbox |
| Upload server | Your own server, which hands out upload links |
-
Connect asks the browser for permission to reach the service, then opens its sign-in window, where you pick the account. Once connected, the row shows "Connected as" and the account's email or name. The connection code is
auth.ts. - Disconnect revokes Screen Tools' access token, deletes the stored sign-in and gives back the service's permissions.
- A build made without the service's app ID shows "Not available in this build" and no Connect button.
Upload servers sit under the services. Add upload server opens a dialog:
| Field | What it takes |
|---|---|
| Name | What the save dialog calls it, such as "Team uploads". Required. |
| Upload URL | The address on your server that hands out upload links. Must start with https:// or http://. |
| Access token (optional) | Only if your server asks for one. It stays on this computer. |
Add server asks the browser for permission to reach that host, then checks the server answers before saving it. With an http:// URL and a token, the dialog warns that the token isn't encrypted on the way. Each server is listed with its URL and a Remove button. You can add more than one. What the server needs is in upload-servers.md, and the card is in upload-servers.tsx.
| Setting | Options | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Theme | Light, dark, system | System |
System follows your operating system's light or dark mode and changes with it.
Screen Tools also stores choices you make outside the Settings page, using the same storage and the same rules:
| Choice | Where you make it | Options | Default |
|---|---|---|---|
| Capture | Recorder window, or the toolbar menu's Record buttons | Screen, camera, screen + camera | Screen |
| Audio | Recorder window | None, mic, system, system + mic | None |
| Save size | Save dialog | Original, high quality, balanced, small, smallest | Original |
| Destination | Save dialog, or the screenshot upload dialog | This computer, or any connected service or upload server | This computer |
| Create a share link | Save dialog, or the screenshot upload dialog | On, off | On |
Picking Camera changes a System audio choice to None and System + mic to Mic, because system audio needs a screen capture. Firefox can't record system audio, so there the stored choice always drops it the same way.
If the remembered destination has been disconnected or removed, the save dialog picks This computer. Upload servers always make a share link, so the switch isn't shown for them.
The save dialog preselects the remembered size only if it would make the video at least 10% smaller. Otherwise it preselects Original.
