First public release of Local SuperWhisper — a Tauri 2 desktop app for Windows and Linux that replicates the Superwhisper workflow against a self-hosted Faster-Whisper backend. Press a hotkey, dictate, and the transcribed text is automatically pasted into whatever window you were using. No cloud, no subscription.

Install (Windows)

  1. Download Local SuperWhisper_0.1.0_x64-setup.exe below.
  2. Run it. Windows SmartScreen will warn — the installer is unsigned. Click More info → Run anyway.
  3. Launch from the Start Menu or system tray.
  4. On first run: pick a hotkey (F9–F12 are most reliable) and configure your Faster-Whisper API endpoint, key, and microphone.

The MSI is also attached for enterprise / Group Policy deployments.

You need a running Faster-Whisper server with an OpenAI-compatible /v1/audio/transcriptions endpoint. See the README for a recommended docker-compose snippet.

What's in this build

Reliability

  • Tray icon now matches standard Windows UX: right-click opens the menu, left-click brings up the settings window. The click handler ignores button-down events so the context menu no longer dismisses itself.
  • Settings window restores reliably from the tray, including from the hidden initial state — show_settings_window calls window.show() first, then performs the AttachThreadInput dance to defeat Windows focus-stealing protection.
  • First-run setup screen for the global hotkey: an unconfigured or invalid stored hotkey no longer crashes the app on startup.

Performance

  • HTTP transcription timeout bumped 30 s → 120 s so a one-time CUDA warmup can't abort the very first request after a Docker restart.
  • With the recommended Faster-Whisper server config (WHISPER__TTL=-1, PRELOAD_MODELS=[...]) the model stays resident in VRAM. Measured against an RTX A6000:
    • Warm via localhost: ~0.5–0.7 s end-to-end (3-s clip)
    • Warm via LAN: ~0.4 s end-to-end
    • First request after container start: ~6 s one-time cuDNN/ct2 init

Cross-platform

  • Linux (Ubuntu 22+, X11) supported alongside Windows 10/11. Wayland users skip window-focus restore but clipboard paste still works.
  • Linux: .deb and .rpm are also produced as part of the build (src-tauri/target/release/bundle/). They are not attached to this release — built locally with npm run tauri -- build.

Build correctness

  • Tauri 2 release-build trap documented and guarded: a custom-protocol feature alias in src-tauri/Cargo.toml plus a heads-up note in the README prevent future PM2 redeploys from silently shipping a dev-mode binary that fails with localhost:1420 ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED.

Known limitations

  • Installer is not code-signed — Windows SmartScreen will show "Windows protected your PC". Click More info → Run anyway.
  • Modifier-only hotkeys (Ctrl, Alt, Shift alone) are not supported by tauri-plugin-global-shortcut. Use F-keys or letter+modifier combos.
  • WSL2 / WSLg: the system tray doesn't render under WSLg. For WSL2 dev, tauri.conf.json keeps settings.visible: false for production but you may want to flip it to true locally.
