Issues during development

Sound

The default sound library in java was very annoying to use. It was extremely limiting in the formats that were available to be used and required that each sound file to be in its own object. The original plan was to make individual AudioPlayer objects for each entity so that we could better control the start and stop of the audio clip but this caused issues on the University Linux system as it could not handle all the objects that were created. The solution was to create a class that contained all the objects and played the sounds.

Self-learning game developing

It was daunting researching game development. This is because the number of resources in learning game development using Java is fairly limited as its more common practice to use C++ for game development. Also, Java was a new language for us to begin with so not only did we have to learn to use OOP in Java but prior to that we had to also learn the basics. This was very time consuming and made the initial stages of development really slow.

Finding assets

Our imagination ran wild when we began making this game, but soon we realized how limited we were in our choices when it came to assets. Neither of us have developed games before so we weren't confident in making our own pretty game assets for this game and so relied on creative content creators and their free to use work. This forced us not only to make design choices but also story choices as we sometimes couldn't find the assets we needed to make our goals a reality. A good example of this was that we wanted to have a female protagonist but couldn't because we could find a female character sprite with attack animations that also kept up to our level of game graphics standards.
