v1.4.1 - settings written to the file the game opens

Choose a tag to compare

@vaas993 vaas993 released this 28 Sep 17:17

v1.4.1 — resolution always reaches the game

Single player only. Tested in the headset on the September 2026 game update, Quest 3 / RTX 5090.

Fixed

  • The resolution is written into the settings file the game actually reads. Until now the mod had to work out which account's settings.json the game would use, and with more than one copy of the game on the PC it could pick the wrong one, so the game started at its old size. The mod now watches the game open its settings.json and writes the size and FOV into exactly that file a moment before the game reads it. Steam, Epic, any number of installed copies: no account has to be known.
  • If the open is somehow not seen within 30 seconds, the mod falls back to the previous method and says so in the log.
  • Switch: settings_from_game_open in cotwvr.ini (0 = the v1.4.0 behaviour).

Everything else is as in v1.4.0; see its notes for the September 2026 update support, the full-rate and AER fixes, and smooth stick turning in AER.

Install

Copy every file into the game folder beside theHunterCotW_F.exe, then run VR Settings\theHunterCotW VR Settings.exe. Upgrading from v1.4.0: replacing cotwvr.dll is enough.

v1.4.0 - September 2026 update, smoother alternate-eye

v1.4.0 — September 2026 game update, smoother alternate-eye

Single player only. Tested in the headset on the September 2026 game update, Quest 3 / RTX 5090. Other configurations are not yet broadly validated.

Game builds

  • Works on the September 2026 game update. All 42 engine addresses are found by signature on that update, on 9.2 (Peru) and on the Epic 9.2 build.
  • Builds the mod has not seen are no longer refused outright; the mod searches them by signature instead.

Fixed

  • Full-rate stereo on the September 2026 update: black headset and reversed depth. The mod now waits for each eye's image to be shown, and works out which eye each image belongs to.
  • Alternate-eye (AER) shake and flicker on the September 2026 update, which got much worse with the in-game panel open.
  • Stereoscopic 3D off: black headset when capture upscaling was on. One upscaled picture is now shown to both eyes.
  • Resolution written to the wrong settings profile when more than one game copy is on the PC, and the new resolution keys of the September update are now written.

Improved

  • AER: smooth stick turning. Head turns were already smooth in AER; turning with the stick juddered, because the eye that was not redrawn stayed facing where you were a frame ago. That eye is now turned by the stick turn since it was drawn, exactly as the headset turns it for a head turn. No GPU cost. Panel row: AER: smooth stick turning (aer_turn_reproject).
  • DLSS in flat play (no headset, or after Stop VR): the mod's picture pass and DLSS keep working (dlss_without_vr).

Experimental

  • Full view (full_view, off by default): renders a picture wide enough to cover the whole headset view, sized from the headset's own angles, so no picture edge is visible. Weapon and HUD keep their size.

Every change has its own switch in cotwvr.ini that restores the v1.3.1 behaviour.

Install

Copy every file into the game folder beside theHunterCotW_F.exe, then run VR Settings\theHunterCotW VR Settings.exe. Upgrading from v1.3.1: replacing cotwvr.dll is enough; the new settings are added to your cotwvr.ini automatically.

v1.3.1 - Neural Rendering compatibility update

@vaas993 vaas993 released this 10 Sep 18:42

v1.3.1 — Live DLSS, experimental NR, and clearer controls

Release for theHunter: Call of the Wild update 9.2 (Peru), single player. Tested locally on Quest 3 / RTX 5090; other configurations are not yet broadly validated.

Changed in 1.3.1

  • Removed the exact-file SHA-256 whitelist for the NVIDIA driver core, NR runtime and NR bridge. A different file fingerprint alone no longer blocks Neural Rendering.
  • Retained required API/export checks, private module-path checks, runtime initialization, resource validation, and GPU synchronization / unsafe-fault protections. This is not a promise of compatibility with every driver or runtime.
  • Passed isolated real-runtime regression checks and confirmed working in-game by the tester.

Features retained from 1.3

  • Live DLSS Quality, Balanced, Performance, Ultra Performance, DLAA and Custom source-size changes through Apply changes, without restarting for supported source sizes.
  • Improved native DLAA re-entry and NR + DLAA / Custom 100% handling after switching modes.
  • Experimental Neural Rendering before DLSS upscaling / native DLAA, with full-rate stereo and AER support on the tested configuration. NR adds GPU cost; it is not frame generation.
  • NR-only working scales of 50%, 75%, 85%, 90%, and 100%. Lower scales can improve performance but soften the image; they do not change headset output size.
  • Hidden-overlay refresh optimization and a small full-output NR composition optimization. No universal FPS improvement is promised.
  • Clearer overlay sections. [ APPLY CHANGES ] sits below Quality/Custom, turns amber for unsubmitted changes, and supports Enter / controller A / left-right. Submission is separate from successful activation: consult Live status.
  • Launcher 1.3 with VR & output, Picture & NR, and Setup & notes tabs; NR controls; optional GPU timing; and a guard against saving while the game is running.
  • Updated setup and troubleshooting notes.

Download and install

Download theHunterCotW-VR-v1.3.1.zip. Close the game and launcher, back up your existing mod files and cotwvr.ini, and extract beside theHunterCotW_F.exe. The package contains a fresh recommended INI; keep your backed-up INI instead if you want to preserve your settings. Open VR Settings/theHunterCotW VR Settings.exe. Start your OpenXR runtime before launching. FXAA + TAA must be selected in the game's video menu for the replacement temporal path.

Optional NR runtime — acquire separately

NVIDIA's nvngx_dlssnr.dll is NOT included. Obtain it independently from a source you are entitled to use, subject to its provider's terms, and place it at:

<game folder>/cotwvr-nr/nvngx_dlssnr.dll

Our required companion bridge, cotwvr-nr/nvngx.dll_dlssnr.dll, is included. It is not a replacement for the NVIDIA runtime. Do not rename a DLSS SR DLL, install another mod's complete injector, or copy a DriverStore core DLL into the game folder.

There is no longer an exact driver/runtime hash whitelist. The private runtime must still provide the supported API contract and initialize successfully; arbitrary DLLs are not interchangeable. Only trusted files should be installed. Other driver versions have not yet been broadly validated. Ordinary DLSS remains usable with NR off, without the optional runtime. NR is off by default; check NR status to confirm activity.

Limitations and validation

  • Headset/output resolution remains fixed at launch; changing it still requires restart. This is separate from live DLSS source scale.
  • An unsafe NR/device fault requires restarting the game; switching NR off does not clear it.
  • Lower NR scales may look softer. GPU timing is optional diagnostics and adds overhead.
  • AER can show temporal mismatch around moving objects. Frame-pacing/hitch work remains deferred.
  • Earlier DLAA cloud flicker was not reproduced in later testing; a dedicated cloud fix is not claimed.
  • This build passed a real-runtime test with 30 DLSS evaluations and 24 NR calls across DLAA, Quality, AER and NR-scale transitions. The updated build was also confirmed working in-game. Other driver/runtime versions remain unverified.
  • No new VirusTotal scan is claimed. Old release scan results do not apply to these files.

This experimental build requires the following tested SHA-256 hashes:

  • NR runtime: E16BCF15E16E13F527491CDF7845B2FE6521A738D8F7C9C721866A8496E1FC8E
  • NVIDIA driver core _nvngx.dll: CE33EC3CE72437B103938BDFB0DE8292105BF8A102B86616F0609E8FB8BC9921 (tested driver 32.0.16.1656)
  • Included bridge: EADF1CA5473B9E0AFA0AA57C2D87C27AC46E99A7F5F268B36B1130AD9F595805

A different runtime or driver can cause NR to decline even if the filename is correct. General driver compatibility has not been implemented; do not disable hash checks. Ordinary DLSS remains usable with NR off, without the optional runtime. NR is off by default. Check NR status, not merely its enable switch.

Limitations and validation

  • Headset/output resolution remains fixed at launch; changing it still requires restart. This is separate from live DLSS source scale.
  • An unsafe NR/device fault requires restarting the game; switching NR off does not clear it.

  • Earlier DLAA cloud flicker was not reproduced in later testing; a dedicated cloud fix is not claimed.
  • Prior graphics changes were tested in-game and with isolated real-runtime checks. The final Apply-button change passed compilation and state tests; a new headset review of that exact UI build is still pending.
  • No new VirusTotal scan is claimed. Old release scan results do not apply to these files.

v1.2

Choose a tag to compare

@vaas993 vaas993 released this 07 Sep 08:18

Three game builds supported instead of one — the mod picks the right engine
addresses by fingerprint. Unrecognised builds still install nothing.

DLSS is off by default now. It needs an RTX card, so the default is the mod's
own per-eye anti-aliasing, which works on any card. RTX owners turn it on in one
row.

The settings window ships as a folder — run VR Settings\theHunterCotW VR Settings.exe. This cut antivirus false positives from 5 to 2 of 65.

Fixed: an old per_eye_temporal_history setting could fight the mod's
anti-aliasing and cause flickering white or red/purple in gameplay (#1), and the
launcher no longer shows a temp-directory warning on launch.

Install: copy everything into the game folder beside theHunterCotW_F.exe,
run VR Settings\theHunterCotW VR Settings.exe, press Use recommended →
Save → Launch game.

Upgrading from 1.1.x: delete the old loose theHunterCotW VR Settings.exe
from your game folder.

On the two newly supported builds: full-rate stereo may run in slow motion
(use alternate-eye) and the picture may look softer. The 9.2 build is unaffected.

Single player only. Work in progress.
