AdminKit v1.0.0 — first stable release

@vuckro vuckro released this 27 May 20:58

AdminKit is a clean, modern restyle of the WordPress admin built on CSS tokens. It works on any WordPress site — standalone, no theme or builder required — and ships a polished light + dark mode out of the box.

This is the first stable release.

Try it in 60 seconds — no install

The link boots a fresh WordPress in your browser with AdminKit pre-installed and logged in as admin — no install, no account, nothing sent anywhere. Close the tab and it's gone.

Highlights

  • 🎨 Full wp-admin restyle — flat, modern, calm. Restyles the dashboard, login screen, post editor surfaces, and admin bar.
  • 🌓 One-click light / dark mode — sun/moon button in the admin bar; choice persisted in localStorage; first visit follows OS preference.
  • 🛡️ Dark mode for any plugin — 15 hand-tuned native adapters (WooCommerce, ACF, Elementor, Fluent suite, WPCode, Gutenberg, …) plus an automatic safety-net engine that scans the DOM and remaps light surfaces to dark on every other plugin's admin pages.
  • 🧑‍🎨 Generated avatars for users with no Gravatar — opt-in via Settings → Discussion → Default Avatar. Cute cartoon faces on pastel backgrounds (powered by DiceBear).
  • ⚡ Inline Quick Edit on users.php — edit first name, last name, email, role straight from the user list.
  • 🔑 Username changer (off by default) — opt-in field that lets admins rename a user's login safely (invalidates active sessions, re-issues self-edit cookie, fires audit hook).
  • 🎯 Brand-aware — accent colour picker in AdminKit → Dashboard. Bricks users get their brand colour automatically.
  • 📐 Built on CSS tokens — every colour, surface and border is a --ak-* variable. Adapters can remap your host's variables without touching its CSS.

What's in the box

Settings UI (top-level AdminKit menu, sibling of Settings)

  • Dashboard — light + dark logos, light + dark favicons (2×2 grid), accent picker, read-only token reference.
  • Features — module on/off toggles.
  • Plugins — every installed plugin, grouped by type, with Native badges on rows that have an adapter; per-plugin opt-out.

Plugin adapters (15)

ACF · Admin Menu Editor · Elementor · Fluent Booking · Fluent Forms · Fluent SMTP · FlyingPress · Gutenberg · HappyFiles · Query Monitor · Slim SEO · WooCommerce · WP Migrate DB Pro · WPCode · WPForms.

Theme adapter

Bricks — provider for brand colours + opt-in builder restyle (with baseline fallback when Bricks's own palette is cleared).

Runtime dark-mode safety net

Covers any plugin not in the native list. Tags modal containers, demotes hued borders, promotes heading-semantic tags (<h1>–<h6>, <th>, <legend>, …) regardless of painted lightness, strips box-shadows on darkened surfaces, and walks loaded stylesheets to catch arbitrary :hover / :focus light backgrounds. See docs/AUTO-THEME.md.

Install

  1. Download `adminkit-1.0.0.zip` from the Assets section below (not "Source code").
  2. In WordPress: Plugins → Add New → Upload Plugin → select the ZIP → Install Now → Activate.
  3. Open AdminKit in the left menu (just after Settings).

That's it — zero configuration, sensible defaults, all polish on. Full guide in docs/INSTALL.md.

Requirements

  • WordPress 6.0+
  • PHP 7.4+
  • No build step. No Composer / npm. No database tables.

Known limitations

  • Multisite — single-site is fully tested. Multisite works but a few features (username changer) are scoped to one site by design.
  • Elementor editor canvas — dark-mode coverage of the Elementor editor is intentionally light. The native adapter focuses on the wp-admin pages around the editor; the canvas itself stays close to Elementor's native look.
  • Lazy-mounted content — accordion contents that change colour via class toggles (rather than DOM mounts) can keep their original colour until the safety net re-scans on the next mutation. Most cases are handled; we'll tighten this loop in 1.1 if needed.

Documentation

What's next

The 1.1 milestone broadens the runtime safety net so per-plugin adapters become polish, not gap-fillers, and lands the custom dashboard page. See the Roadmap in the README.
