EWeb 0.65
Less disk activity while you browse.
- The disk cache is written only when you quit (Settings > General, "Write it to the disk only at quit", on by default). What comes while you browse is held in memory: as much as the cache's size and a quarter of the memory free (about 30 MB with 128 MB TT RAM). Quitting writes it all, with Closing EWeb's bar, so quit takes longer after a long session; only after about 22 MB of new pages (on a Falcon with 128 MB TT RAM) is some of it written while idle. Untick it to have the cache written a little at a time while idle, as before. What was cached in a session that ends in a crash or a reset isn't on the disk.
- A page's pictures are kept decoded, without their original files. A picture is known by its address; the disk holds the screen's copy only. Measured on three pages of 24 photos: 7.5 MB written before, 1.5 MB now; a page read back on a revisit 2.1 MB before, 0.45 MB now. A picture wanted at a size or in colours not kept is fetched again.
- Cookies, history and bookmarks are unchanged.
To update: replace the folder's files with these.
EWeb 0.64
Fixes 0.63's two bombs: a picture beside a box that hides its overflow (a carousel's next slide) was drawn with a negative width, a bus error on a Falcon with TT RAM. Replace the folder's files.
EWeb 0.63
The family's progress bar (guideline 5.9): one bar for a load at the status bar's foot, filling from left to right; blue in 256 colours, pens 1 to 15 in 16, black otherwise. Each step draws only what the bar gained. It stays full for 800 ms, then goes; the status words name the phase.
EWeb 0.62
File names are now in lowercase. On a MiNT ext2 drive, delete the old folder and install this release fresh.
Scrolling drawn off the screen. EWeb now keeps the page around the window (the window's rows, a window below and one above) in the screen's own form, made while it waits. Page Down, Page Up and a line are one copy to the screen, and a part still to be drawn is made off the screen and shown whole: no more rows coming down the window band by band.
- On a Falcon with TT RAM (the DFB1) or a TT: Page Down on the screen in about 0.2 s (1.0 to 1.1 s before on the DFB1 in Hatari, 0.7 to 0.9 on a TT), never half drawn.
- On a stock Falcon where ST RAM allows (given back while a page loads). A 4 MB Falcon with a big page draws as before.
- A scroll pressed while the last one was still being drawn could leave rows a step out of place: fixed on every machine.
- A page that doesn't fit on a small machine no longer stops the machine for 300 ms while memory is given back.
File names in lowercase (the family's rule 6.6): eweb.inf, eweb.log, cookies.txt, history.txt, bookmark.htm, cache, eweb.fnt, tls.ovl, ewebjs.ovl and the rest; the release files and the zip, eweb-0.62.zip, too. The file selector opens on *.htm.
Please: install the whole zip into a fresh folder, open iamexpat.de through the Pi and try Page Down, Page Up and the arrow keys.
EWeb 0.61
Answers Erez's reports of 2 Nov on 0.60.
- The progress ribbon is seen again. Since 0.57 four of its five colours came out the status bar's own grey; it now takes the nearest pen that is a colour.
- A page is painted in bigger steps on a machine with TT or Fast RAM (a DFB1, a TT): a page shown goes in 5–6 slices instead of 12, and a field typed in is redrawn in one go, not in bands. The stock Falcon and the ST draw as before.
- A page that doesn't fit in memory says so, instead of "too big". EWEB.LOG records the failure, and at its start the memory free.
- Scripts read sizes in CSS pixels, and scrollHeight is as tall as the content (webdriveruniversity.com's accordion opens fully).
Please: install the whole zip. Open iamexpat.de through the Pi with LOG=1 in EWEB.INF, and send EWEB.LOG whatever happens.
EWeb 0.60
Fixed
- EWeb no longer holds the machine while a big page is unpacked. Most sites send their pages packed. EWeb used to unpack a page in one go once it had all come: iamexpat.de's home page, 3.3 MB of HTML, held GEM for about 9 seconds on a 50 MHz Falcon, and its articles for about 6. Now it unpacks a piece at a time and lets GEM and the mouse in at least every tenth of a second, and Esc stops it. The page takes no longer to load than before.
- Saving to the disk cache no longer stalls on a slow card. EWeb writes the pages and pictures it keeps while you read, a little at a time. A big page was written in one go, which on a slow SD card took seconds at a time. Now it is written in small steps that get smaller when the disk is slow.
Please
- Install the whole zip, or at least
EWEB.PRGandEWEBST.PRG. - With
LOG=1in EWEB.INF, go to www.iamexpat.de through the Pi and open one of its articles, as before. If GEM stalls again, send EWEB.LOG.
EWeb 0.59
Faster
- Secure connections made on the Falcon (TLS.OVL 1.12). The DSP works out the X25519 key exchange in one command instead of a word at a time, and EWeb gets its turns while it waits.
- The ST's start is back under 0.57's: about 1.7 s to the window drawn on an 8 MHz ST. A table of character widths is now filled in as pages need it, not at every start.
Fixed
- When EWeb bombs with 11 bombs it writes CRASH.LOG, even when another program holds the vector those bombs go through, as one did on the DFB1 with 0.57.
- The log names that program. With
LOG=1in EWEB.INF, EWEB.LOG says at the start which program holds the vector, if one does.
Please
- With
LOG=1, open a few secure sites on the Falcon itself, not through the Pi (Settings > Secure), and send EWEB.LOG. Its "X25519 on the DSP" lines give the handshake's real times on your Falcon, which decide the next handshake work.
EWeb 0.58
Fixed
- Scrolling with an arrow or a key held. Holding a window's arrow, or Page Up or Down, scrolls cleanly. In 0.57 lines repeated down the window while the arrow was held, and Page Up and Down jumped.
- A crash with pictures through the Pi. Sizing, fulling or moving a window while a page's pictures came through the Pi could make EWeb read memory it had already given back. While pictures come, those wait until the current picture stops.
New
- Known trackers left out. Google Tag Manager and Google Analytics are no longer fetched as a page's parts.
TRACKERS=1in EWEB.INF fetches them. - Pressing (the family's guideline 5.8). A link or a toolbar button shows pressed while the mouse button is held, also in monochrome, where a pressed link is white on black. Letting go off it does nothing. A double click in the address follows the desktop's setting.
- Pages.
- buttons made of other elements;
- form controls in a page's own colours;
- Glyphicons' and Font Awesome's common icons;
- min and max sizes with
box-sizing: border-box; - custom elements (webdriveruniversity.com).
Faster and smaller
- Text, fills and scrolling drawn by the family's fast paths where they win, mostly on the stock Falcon and the ST.
- Hebrew laid out as fast as English.
- Unused code left out of both programs: EWEB.PRG is 40 KB smaller, EWEBST.PRG 16 KB.
EWeb 0.57
EWeb 0.57: the stock Falcon within the family's Speed times.
- A page is made and shown in turns, so the window, the menus and Esc answer while it is parsed, styled, laid out and drawn: on a stock 4 MB Falcon in 16 colours the home page answers within 90 ms (0.56: 305), the sample page 100 (290), the news page 100 (275), a page of pictures 85 (340).
- Scrolling: a line in 50 ms (75), a page in 75 ms (105); Settings opens in 150 ms (155) and gives the window back in 40 (90).
- Pictures: the DSP's JPEG decode and dither give GEM its turns (common's pic.c); one picture's dither never runs inside another's.
- The fonts are unpacked 2 KB at a time, with turns between.
- From AERA-Atari's common: faster scroll bars in boxes, faster text and boxes on the ST, the About box's ground by the CPU on a 68000, and a heap that takes exactly what it needs when memory is short.
- The ST edition stays within its recorded floor (the 4 MB 1040 ST, DESIGN.md).
EWeb 0.56
- The page is drawn in short slices, with keys, clicks and Esc answered between them. On a stock Falcon a page's window no longer holds the machine for over a second (the news page: its longest pause 1.5 s to 0.28 s; a page scrolled 1.1 s to 0.1 s; the start 3.4 s to 0.46 s to the window drawn).
- The disk cache is written when EWeb is idle, not while a page's pictures come: the hard disk no longer stalls a page of photos as it downloads (yaary.music on the Falcon).
- A progressive JPEG no longer holds the stock Falcon for 1.2 s in one go; the home page's style sheet, a page's finishing and long texts take turns too; a picture's colours for the screen are made as it comes, not as the window is drawn.
- Stop pressed while a page's pictures come says "Pictures stopped." again.
- The ST starts faster (its window drawn in 1.7 s, was 2.3 s), and scrolls a line in 0.3 s (was 4.6 s).
