What is new in 0.48: speed on the 8 MHz ST.

  • The throbber's frames and the toolbar's icons are unpacked in one go, not one at a time (the same pictures): the ST showed its home page in 10.5 s, now 8.9 s.
  • The family's shared code copies memory down a long word at a time (it went a byte at a time), and the ST edition makes its CSS lengths into screen pixels with the 68000's own 16-bit multiply (not a 64-bit one in software): the news test page's layout on the ST went from 43.7 s to 27.7 s, the whole page from 112 s to 94 s, with the same layout as before.
  • TLS.OVL 1.11 (the family's shared code).

The start on the ST is 15.9 s (17.3 s in 0.47). The stock machines are still slower than the guidelines' times; that work goes on.
