The disk cache in 4 MB pieces (your choice of 29 Oct):

  • CACHE\ is now a ring of pieces, EWEB00.PAK, EWEB01.PAK..., a quarter of the cache each and 4 MB at most, each with its own small list, and a small index of them all.
  • A big cache no longer slows EWeb down: no file is read deeper than 4 MB (a 100 MB pack took up to 52 disk commands for one read near its end), and for a 100 MB cache the index read at the first page and written at quit is 38 KB instead of about 800 KB, with about 150 KB of memory instead of 1.3 MB.
  • The old cache (EWEB.PAK and its index) is removed the first time and the cache starts again, as you decided: no migration.
