Wand 0.3.0

New

  • A new remote panel. A sidebar, a picture of your remote that scales to the window, and an inspector that edits one key at a time. Switch to a list view any time. The action picker has categories, search (by name or purpose, e.g. "voice") and full keyboard control.
  • Per-app profiles. Give an app its own mappings, for example Play/Pause → Enter in Terminal and → Right Arrow in Keynote. A profile overrides only the keys you change and inherits the rest from Global. It switches automatically when the app comes to the front, from the very next press.
  • Tap or Hold. Any mapping can be held instead of tapped: the key stays down while you hold the remote's button — push-to-talk dictation with Right ⌘ or Fn, for example. Arrow and page actions repeat instead, at your keyboard's repeat rate.
  • Remote volume buttons. General → Remote Volume Buttons: run their mappings (as before), or let them change the Mac's volume.
  • Launch at Login in the menu (macOS 11 and later).
  • Setup checklist. On first launch, and any time from Pairing & Setup… in the menu: permissions, remote checks (buttons, touch surface, battery where the remote reports it) and a pairing guide.
  • Several remotes at once. Each remote is recognised on its own, and the menu and the panel list them.
  • Custom text can type its line breaks as Return or Shift+Return (for chat apps where Return sends).
  • Learned shortcuts record modifier combinations and a lone modifier (such as Right ⌘) correctly.

Changes

  • The first press after a remote connects is no longer ignored.
  • Your keyboard's media keys keep working normally while a remote is connected, and a Magic Trackpad or mouse is never affected by Wand.
  • "Mouse Sensitivity" is now General → Distance per Click.
  • Only one Wand runs at a time.
  • If a permission is revoked while Wand runs, the menu bar icon shows an orange dot and you get one notification.
  • Wand pauses the system's Remote Control daemon (which otherwise opens Music on Play) while it runs, and restores it when it quits — also on the next launch if Wand was killed.
  • The diagnostic log moved from /tmp/wand.log to ~/Library/Logs/Wand/wand.log (readable only by you). Detailed per-event lines are written only while Debug Logging is on in the menu.

Known limitations

  • If you press the same media key on your keyboard and on the remote within about 50 ms of each other, the keyboard's press can occasionally be taken for the remote's.
  • With two or more remotes connected, only one remote's touch surface moves the pointer; the panel marks which one. Buttons work on all of them.
  • On one key, Hold and Double-Click cannot be combined: a held click acts on press and cannot wait for a second press.
  • Wand relies on private, reverse-engineered macOS interfaces that Apple can change at any time.
  • The new Tap/Hold and repeat, per-app profiles and volume-button option pass automated tests, but have not yet been fully tested by hand with a physical remote. If something misbehaves, please open an issue on GitHub.

Upgrading from 0.2.0

  • Quit Wand 0.2.0 from its menu before installing 0.3.0. If 0.2.0 was force-quit instead, the system's Remote Control daemon may stay off until you log out (Play on your keyboard won't open Music until then).
  • Your mappings, learned shortcuts, text and app actions are carried over automatically. Per-app profiles are new; going back to 0.2.0 keeps your global mappings.
  • Accessibility and Input Monitoring permissions are expected to carry over, because both versions are signed with the same Developer ID. If the remote stops responding after the upgrade, check them in System Settings → Privacy & Security, or open Pairing & Setup….
  • Launch at Login is off until you turn it on; it is available once Wand is in the Applications folder.

System requirements

  • macOS 11 Big Sur or later, on Apple silicon or Intel (one universal app).
  • Siri Remote 1st generation (A1513 / A1962), 2nd generation (A2540) or 3rd generation (A2854), paired over Bluetooth.

  • 诊断日志从 /tmp/wand.log 改到 ~/Library/Logs/Wand/wand.log(只有你自己能读)。

Wand 0.2.0

New

  • Pairing guide — a built-in "How to Pair" window (menu bar → How to Pair…) with step-by-step Siri Remote pairing instructions per model and a one-click Open Bluetooth Settings button.
