This release is about making wxMaxima nicer to use, and again was developed
with substantial help from the AI assistant Claude. Text cells get bold,
italic, superscripts and more, which survive copy and paste; long numbers
are shown in digit groups; an error is marked in the code cell where it
happened; long messages wrap to fit the window; the toolbar can be
rearranged; and the configuration dialog previews its settings. Plus a
security fix for the connection to Maxima, and many smaller fixes.
Text cells
- Text cells, titles and section headings can contain bold, italic,
underlined, struck-through, superscript and subscript text, set using new
toolbar buttons (#492). A line gets taller if something in it needs the
room, an emoji for example. The formatting is saved in .wxmx files in a
way older versions of wxMaxima can still read. - The formatting survives copy and paste: within wxMaxima, into word
processors, mail programs and web editors (as RTF and HTML), and from
them into a text cell (#2475). RTF export keeps it, too. - Web addresses in code cells' comments are links now, as they already
were in text cells. - Selecting text in a text cell that wraps over several lines no longer
makes the selection's ends jump between lines (#2477). - ESC, a hexadecimal number and ESC enter that Unicode character again, as
the manual says (#2561): the list of symbols closed as soon as the number
matched no symbol's name. The list now shows the character the number
stands for and its Unicode name next to the names, and each name next to
its symbol. A leading0oru+marks a number that also begins a name.
Code cells and evaluation
- When Maxima reports an error, the statement that failed gets a light red
background, and for a syntax error the place Maxima stopped at a stronger
one, with the cursor there (#289). The statement being evaluated right
now gets a faint yellow background. All three colours can be changed in
the "Style" tab. - Long numbers in output and in code cells are shown in groups of digits,
2111230496 as 2 111 230 496 (#192). Only the display changes: copying,
saving, exporting and what is sent to Maxima contain no gaps. This can be
changed in the "Worksheet" tab. - Long warnings, error messages, status messages and printf() output wrap
to fit the window, without tearing numbers or web addresses apart. - A hidden multiplication sign is drawn where output is broken into lines,
and the line is broken after it wherever possible (#2263). A power in
linear form no longer reads "x^ 12". - A click on the right half of a line's last character puts the cursor at
the end of the line. - Pasting into a cell scrolls it into view. On Linux a middle-click pastes
the last selected text, not the Ctrl+C clipboard (#794). - The part of the worksheet you are reading no longer jumps while cells
above it are evaluated again or output arrives above the cursor, and
output that changes out of sight no longer makes the window flicker. - The worksheet no longer scrolls a whole screen past its last cell.
Copy and paste
- Cells copied and pasted inside wxMaxima keep their text formatting,
plots and images, but leave Maxima's answers behind: what Maxima answered
where they were evaluated isn't necessarily what it answers where they
are pasted (#2474). Pasting into other programs still includes the
results. - Copying is fast even for large selections: every clipboard format is
still offered, but each is only drawn when a program pastes it (#2030).
The list of formats to copy and the bitmap size limit are gone from the
configuration dialog. What was copied stays on the clipboard when the
window is closed. - Copying part of an output also offers it as SVG and, on Windows, as an
enhanced metafile (#2472). - The right-click menu is shorter: the "Copy as ..." formats moved into a
"Copy in Another Format" submenu.
Plots and images
- Plots are made as SVG where wxWidgets renders SVG with text (LunaSVG,
which the Windows builds now have): they stay sharp at any zoom factor
and in print. SVG images in .wxm files and copied SVG images are shown
instead of "Cannot render the image" (#2087). - New variable
wxplot_scaleshows the wx* plots and animations larger or
smaller than they would otherwise be, text included, e.g.
wxdraw2d(...),wxplot_scale=2$.wxplot_scale:'nativeshows a plot at
the sizewxplot_sizeasks for instead of shrinking it to fit the window. - On a dark worksheet images are drawn on a white backdrop by default, so
black line art stays visible. GIF and XPM images keep their transparency
(#2227). wximplicit_plot()loads the package it needs, and wxMaxima explains how
to fix a Maxima temp directory whose name contains a quote, where draw
cannot plot (#1106).- Scrolling over an animation with a touchpad no longer flicks through a
frame per tiny movement.
Matrices
wx_matrix(M, banding=true|false|auto)chooses whether rows and columns
are shaded, and autocompletion offerswx_matrix()with a template.- A matrix with scrollbars of its own scrolls with the mouse wheel while it
is selected (#2479), scrolls in the exported HTML, too, and no longer
loses a fraction at the start of a partly scrolled-away entry. - Shift+Up/Down with a cell's output selected selects whole cells starting
there, not from the top of the worksheet.
Help
- One setting decides whether help is shown in the sidebar or a browser,
and F1, "Help on ...", the manuals and Maxima's ?, ?? and describe() all
follow it. Next to it, an option prints ?, ?? and describe() into the
worksheet instead. - wxMaxima's own commands (
wx_matrix(),table_form(),wxplot2d(), the
wx...variables, ...) get a "Help on" entry, and F1 opens wxMaxima's
manual at their description. - The wizards' sidebar no longer hides its OK button: it starts in a window
of its own and is only as high as it needs. The Solve ODE wizard offers
help on ode2. wxdeclare_subscripted()works (#1653), "Always" autosubscripting really
subscripts everything after an underscore, and the manual documents both
subscript commands.
Configuration and interface
- The configuration dialog's "Worksheet" tab shows a sample worksheet that
follows its settings. In the "Style" tab a movable divider separates the
settings from the sample, which moves beside them on wide screens. - The toolbar's sections can be rearranged and hidden in a new "Toolbar"
tab or by right-clicking the toolbar. "Evaluate all" has its own icon
again, and "Select all" selects all cells. - The tray icon only appears while something needs your attention and the
window isn't active: a calculation finished, a question, an error, the
debugger, or a failed autosave. Its menu works with AppIndicator trays. - Closing an untitled document with unsaved changes asks first and opens
"Save As" only if you choose "Save" (#1737). "Save As" of a .wxm file
proposes a .wxm name on Linux (#2440). - The tooltip tint is readable in dark mode, and the diff viewer can copy
and has "Find previous"/"Find next" buttons.
Security
- Another user on the same computer who connected to wxMaxima before
Maxima did could pose as Maxima. wxMaxima now sends nothing secret over
that connection and acts on nothing until Maxima has authenticated.
Windows
- The Windows builds use wxWidgets 3.3.4, so they include the AI chat
sidebar and the integrated help browser, and switching the appearance
re-themes the whole window right away. - The installer no longer needs administrator rights: without them it
installs for the current user only.
Other fixes
- wxWidgets' Qt ports: no more startup abort with 3.2 (#2483), no crashes
when closing dialogs with 3.3, the style editor edits the clicked style
(#2527), and the Greek and Symbols sidebars lay out and highlight
correctly. - wxMaxima no longer crashes on closing with wxWidgets' GTK4 port, and exits
with a message instead of crashing when there is no display. - On FreeBSD wxMaxima no longer hangs when it stops or restarts Maxima.
- A long number no longer collapses when line breaks in long numbers are
switched on, and a wide output keeps its horizontal scrollbar (#2480). - A floating find/replace sidebar no longer grows higher than its contents.
- The LaTeX export no longer depends on the window width (#408).
- The Hungarian manual PDF composes again with pandoc 3.2 or newer (#2271).
