When the code runs, the LED is ON by default and turns OFF when I press the button. The expected behavior is the opposite: it should be OFF by default and turn ON only when pressed. This might be a logic error.

The issue arises because we're using INPUT_PULLUP, which keeps the pin HIGH when not pressed and LOW when pressed. The logic if (buttonState == LOW) correctly turns the LED on. So, the code is actually correct for an INPUT_PULLUP setup the confusion likely comes from using a pull-down wiring. I’ll just clarify this in the comments.
