Mods

Mods for Strikers Charged are Riivolution packs, the format Wii mods have long used. The same pack runs in this port, in Dolphin and on a real Wii. A pack can change the game's files (models, textures, menus, sounds, cutscenes) and add code, and turning it off brings the original game back.

The packs

Strikers Tweaks

This port's gameplay and menu tweaks, each an option: skip intro, fast menus, unlock everything, win by 2, the NK bug fix, no Mega Strikes with controllers and more (Tweaks has them all). The port's build installs it and its options are in F10 > Mods, where a change applies at once; in Dolphin and on a Wii, the same options apply at the next launch.

Super Team

Super Mario Strikers' robot team as a captain of its own. On captain select, - and + (or L and R on a controller) switch to its page; any captain can face it, Waluigi (its base) too.

  • SMS's robots, with SMS's animations, voice and sounds; its whole team is robots.
  • SMS's walk-on, goal celebrations and end of match, with SMS's effects: the self-shock, the rocket boots.
  • Its Mega Strike is SMS's Super Strike: the float in the yellow lightning vortex, then the kick.
  • Its own blue team: logo, banners, emblems, HUD icon, Striker Times photos, loading screens.

It's built from your own copies of Super Mario Strikers and Strikers Charged: its README says how.

GameCube controllers

For a Wii and Dolphin: GameCube controllers as players, the way this port plays them (the port has this built in, so it doesn't need the pack). A GameCube controller in port N is player N whenever no Wii Remote is connected on that channel. Menus are navigated with the D-pad and sticks (A selects, B goes back, L/R page), and matches use Super Mario Strikers' GameCube controls, as on Controls.

Defending a Mega Strike takes a Wii Remote's pointer, which a GameCube controller can't give: Strikers Tweaks' No Mega Strikes with controllers turns them off while one plays.

Strikers Mod Loader

On a Wii and in Dolphin, the packs' code is loaded by the Strikers Mod Loader, a small pack of its own: put it next to the others. This port builds the code in instead and doesn't need it.

Installing a pack

A pack comes laid out like a Wii's SD card: a riivolution folder with its XML file, and its own folder beside it (tweaks/, superteam/, gamecube/, strikersloader/). Every pack here is for the USA disc (R4QE01, revision 1), the one this port uses.

In this port

  1. Copy the pack's folders into the data folder's Riivolution folder, merging riivolution with the one already there:

    Platform Riivolution folder
    Windows %LOCALAPPDATA%\MSCRecomp\Riivolution
    Linux ~/.local/share/MSCRecomp/Riivolution
    macOS ~/Library/Application Support/MSCRecomp/Riivolution
  2. If the pack has code (Super Team does), run the build again (build.sh, or build.cmd on Windows): the pack's code is built into the game.

  3. Start the game: F10 > Mods lists the packs and their options.

A change in F10 > Mods applies the next time the game starts, or at once for an option that only adds files (each of the Strikers Tweaks). Adding, removing or turning off a pack with code takes the next build too (F10 says when the build no longer matches the packs). The build installs and updates Strikers Tweaks itself: turn it off in F10 rather than deleting it.

In Dolphin

  1. Copy the pack's folders and the Strikers Mod Loader's into Dolphin's Load/Riivolution folder (File > Open User Folder, then Load; create Riivolution there).
  2. Right-click the game, Start with Riivolution Patches..., turn on the packs and Strikers Mod Loader > Code mods, and Start.

On a Wii

  1. Copy the pack's folders and the Strikers Mod Loader's to the root of your SD card, merging riivolution if the card already has one.
  2. Start Riivolution (from the Homebrew Channel) with the game's disc in, pick Mario Strikers Charged, set the packs and Strikers Mod Loader > Code mods to Enabled, and Launch.

Making mods

Making packs, writing code mods and adding captains are documented in the repository, next to the code they describe: docs/modding.
